Another Phillies Player puts his foot in his mouth

''They had to use their entire bullpen to beat us,'' Hernandez said. ``Did you see how scared they were?''

Roberto Horrendous as he's called in Philadelphia offered up this nugget after the game. I don't really think that we were scared at all. Does he not realize we've taken 7 of 8? I think it is only masking his afraidness of the Fish.

The only stat that matters:

2004 Series- Marlins 7, Phillies 1

And let us not forget that the Phillies just BARELY beat the Fish to get that one win. :p

and what was up with polanco getting mad because he got hit? what pitcher would intentionally throw at a batter with a sub 260 average and absolutely no power?

Roberto Hernandez shouldn't talk. Wasn't he part of the great bullpen the Phillies put together this offseason to lead them to a title? We've hit dingers off every single one of them.

Bowa's move sends larger message

PHILADELPHIA - So there was Admin Bowa being brazen, flaunting the Phillies' short-armed pitching staff in Ed Wade's face Thursday. The Florida Marlins had taken a two-run lead in the fourth inning and were knocking around Randy Wolf again in the fifth, Juan Pierre and Luis Castillo on first and third with no outs.

A win was still within reach should the bleeding stop soon, but the tourniquet Bowa pulled out wasn't rookie Ryan Madson, he of the 1.84 ERA, but rookie Geoff Geary, he of the now-6.67 ERA. Four hits and six runs later, Geary finally was walking off the mound, the Marlins' lead was comfy enough to withstand a game comeback, and it sure seemed as though Bowa had sacrificed a game to send a message to his general manager.

One more time, after the Phils' 10-8 loss Thursday, Bowa was asked if his pitching staff needed some sort of boost from a deadline deal, and one more time, Bowa answered in the way he always does: "That's not my area."

But everyone at Citizens Bank Park could figure out what he thought based on that fifth-inning decision to go to Geary instead of bringing in Madson or sticking with Wolf. Everyone could see his subtle methods of begging Wade for pitching help, and there was a sense among certain players after the game that Bowa should have used Roberto Hernandez or someone else other than the longest man in the bullpen.

"I'm short" in the bullpen, Bowa said when asked why he went with Geary. "And Madson's role has been elevated. It was the fifth inning. I didn't have [billy] Wagner. I might have had [Tim] Worrell for one inning at most. I was completely short. And Madson's role is no longer as a long reliever."

No, it's now as a stopper, a pitcher used when a team needs outs and needs them now. This was a 4-2 game in the fifth inning, a victory there to be had if the Phillies could have squeezed out of that jam, and if you're serious about winning that game, you put in your best available reliever then. You put in Madson and you take your chances.

"I get out of there with two runs, even three runs, it gives the team an opportunity," Geary said.

He didn't, and no one should have expected him to. After all, Geary now has allowed 36 hits and 20 earned runs in only 26 innings. He is less a bandage than a sign of surrender.

But Bowa can't have it both ways, either. Assume for a moment he has decided the ballgame is about to get out of hand. If Wolf is healthy, and he and Bowa say he is, and if the bullpen really is so tuckered out, then Thursday had to be one of those days that a struggling starter is offered up on the altar.

Wolf had thrown only 83 pitches when Bowa removed him; if you're going to replace him with Geary, why not leave him out there for 20-25 more pitches?

"He has to make a decision on what he feels or thinks," Wolf said. "That's his job, and I understand that."

I'm not suggesting Bowa should have left Wolf in there until the Marlins had batted him up and down the ballpark. I'm suggesting that Bowa didn't consider it such a bad thing to make a broader point to Wade about the state of the Phillies' pitching staff, that his thinking might have gone something like this: You're going to insist our pitching staff is good enough to win, Ed? Well, here's what I've got to work with. What do you think now?

Understand: Try as he might, Bowa can't hide his belief that the Phillies have to make a major trade before the July 31 deadline. And Thursday's loss is now one more piece of evidence - another poor performance from a starter, another lamentation about an occasionally overworked bullpen - for Bowa to persuade Wade to do something. He could have brought in Ryan Madson. He could have brought in Roberto Hernandez, or even Brian Powell and his respectable 3.58 ERA.

He brought in Geoff Geary, right in the general manager's face.

"You can't use all your bullets when you're behind," Bowa said.

On Thursday, out there for everyone to see, he was as brazen as he has ever been, his decision really a demand for another magazine from Ed Wade. His players almost bailed him out with their bats, but by then, it was too late. Admin Bowa made a demand, all right, and he may have cost his team a victory to do it.

The city is fine. Its beautiful and very fun, but it's sports fans are an odd bunch.

I had a hoot starting Eagles and Dolphins cheers Thursday.

Dude, the dolphins suck.....dont get me started...the Eagles are my lifeblood.

That article is priceless. The whole feeling of the game (at the time of Wolf being lifted) was that the Phillies pretty much gave in, and that we were just playing out the last 5 innings. If anything we should be the one's saying that we were making a statement considering we lifted Pavano probably a bit prematurely, and for the Philly writers to even suggest that the Phillies viewed the game as winnable in the 5th and 6th innings is laughable. We let them back into that game because Howard sucks and Koch couldn't throw a strike.

Nothing like a Phillies series to get us fired up, huh?

Haha, wow. That is a dumb comment, but I love that kind of stuff. I mean seriously how can Roberto Hernandez even talk. Man Phillies fans are great. Always good for a laugh

Pavano gave up 6 runs in less than 6 innings, Id say he was pulled a bit too late

Hmm well we used 5 relievers yesterday. They used 3.

During the first game, we used 1 reliever, they used 2.

The grand total is: Us 6, Them 5

on a side note, Roberto Hernandez is a moron.

To say the Marlins looked scared is ridiculous. What scared team would pitch Bump, Howard and Koch?

Yes, the defending world champions are scared of a team that we've demolished more than the Expos.

Phillies are a joke.
