Favorite coach(es)

Featured Replies

Who's your favorite coach of alltime? HS, College, Pro, whatever...I'll give you my favorite coach (no surprises here), and I'll also mention some of my favorite coaches I've met...

Favorite coach: Steve Spurrier. The man was a genius on the field. Hilarious off the field. He also didn't sugar coat anything, wasn't PC, didn't give corny phrases, but rather said it like it was, win or lose. He wasn't afraid of any team/coach, and had respect for some of the best (JoPa). In fact, Joe Paterno's wife had cancer I believe, and Steve Spurrier set it up where she could go to Shands Hospital (Gainesville hospital) for some of the nation's best care. Also, he kept a tight ship, and a clean program. He took a team that was on probation (for the 2nd time that decade) and turned them into the cleanest program in the SEC (fact, btw....and it was determined to be the cleanest program in the SEC, EACH YEAR). That, my friends is one helluva coach.

As for coaches I've met...

I've met Steve Spurrier a few times. Awesome dude...has his priorities straight and is a smart cookie.

Tommy Bowden was cool when I met him. He spoke at the church I attend in Greenville, SC...I talked with him after and he was cool...but he did make a dumb remark...he made some joking comment about how I need to gain weight (for football)...well, it's true, but he effing was 5-8 140 lbs. when he played for West Virginia...and the only reason he was on the team was because Daddy was head coach......no, but seriously, he was a cool guy.

Ron Zook: I was picking my brother up from the Gator football camp, and he randomly patted me on the back and said good luck. It wasn't actually "meeting" him, but it was hilarious....that guy is so ADD.

Bob Pruitt: I was a kid and was at the Gator football camp when he was the DC there (he's head coach at Marshall now). He was such an awesome guy, especially towards kids, and I loved him. He was kinda the dude in charge of our "team" there.

I've also met Stoops but I don't have too much to say about him good or bad...

Don Shula, Pat Riley, Leonard Hamilton and Lute Olsen are my favorites.

Shula is of course the all time winningest coach in nfl history and coached my Dolphins.

although riley never won a title here as coach and hasnt won a title since the Showtime days he came here and made Heat basketball relevant.

Leonard Hamilton built UM basketball from scratch and had it going in the right direction until he decided to tryout the NBA. he's already working his magic on FSU.

Lute Olsen is the epitome of class in my opinion and he knows how to win. 5 final 4's (4 in arizona and 1 in Iowa and a national title in zona), hall of famer and that arizona program was nothing until he took over.

John Chaney is the man....he is the wisest coach never to win a title and college basketball is better for having him mold young boys into young upstanding gentlemen.

Red Auerbach, he was the greatest coach in professional sports history... and he's Jewish :cool .

Admin brown, mckeon, coker, leonard hamilton and roy williams are great ones to name a few

but my favorite? thats simple: dean smith. because of him, UNC basketball became a powerhouse. hes a great coach and a greater human being

Admin Coker, Jack Mckeon, Doug Mclean, Scotty Bowman, Jim Morris, Roger Nielson (May he rest in peace), Pat Riley to name a few.

Admin Coker doesn't impress me. I think he simply kept things going...I respect someone who can turn a program around much better....and I am NOT saying that because he is a Cane.

Oh, and IowaMarlinFan...

Hayden Fry, if he stays in college football...preferably w/one team, will be one of the greatest college football coaches ever...that guy has got it down...and he's young...he impressed me SO much in the Outback Bowl.

oh another comment on Spurrier:

He revolutionized the offenses (and in the process, defenses as well) in the SEC. It was such a shock for SEC teams to see a team throwing the ball like Spurrier was doing....with SHANE MATTHEWS!!! The same Shane Matthews that was a 5th string QB before Spurrier got there. The guy didn't even hardly recruit. He's been quoted as saying that he hates recruiting. He got good players (many from in-state obviously, but a few from Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee), and his staff recruited hard (Zook was there recruiting Kearse, Peterson, and company), but he stuck to his plan....he made people with decent talent (Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerfell, Jesse Palmer, Terry Dean, Noah Brindise) look great because of his system. And he also had one of the best WRs coaches in college football...close friend of his, Dwayne Dixon (who I've also met and talked to many times....and is one helluva coach). Spurrier is simply the man.

And Ron Zook couldn't? Drop the argument Furman.

Joe Gibbs is a very nice man.

JoePa has invested just about all of his school salary back into building new programs and libraries at Penn State.

Dean Smith is a legend and handled his top recruits' future with delicate care. He realized that their future was in the NBA, and did not try to stop them if they were projected to be a lottery pick.

Ha! When did I say he could. He's a good recruiter. I said I thought it was funny how he was so ADD at the camp. Don't turn this into a Gators v. Canes thread...I was simply saying that Coker doesn't impress me as much as a coach who built the program up..

Furman, I think you meant to say Kirk Ferentz instead of Hayden Fry. Kirk Ferentz is our current head coach and he is the one who replaced our former legendary coach of 20 years, Hayden Fry.

But yea, Kirk Ferentz is a god around here. The man knows how to coach.

Vince Lombardi, Tom Kelly, Mike Holmgren, Phil Jackson, & Butch Harmon (Tiger's ex-Golf coach)

Connie Mack, the HOF manager of the Philadelphia A's, coached the team for 50 years, from 1901-1951. He basically lived and died with his team. He also happened to be the winningest manager in baseball history.

Iowa, I am an idiot my friend.

I did mean Ferentz. That guy is gonna be good. He reminds me of Stoops in the fact that they both took decent teams (Iowa wasn't a national power, and neither was Oklahoma at the time) and made them into national powerhouses. Iowa still hasn't gotten the name recognition, but they will. Many expected a drop off after Banks left, but they just kept rolling. How's Ferentz at recruiting? That guy impresses me man.
