Relief pitcher Chad Fox, who played a key role in the team's championship a year ago but has missed all but a month of this season with an inflamed elbow, will not need another operation, although he will miss the rest of the season.

Fox, who has had reconstructive elbow surgery twice in his career, saw orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., and after consultation with the Marlins medical staff, Andrews prescribed continued rest for what is now being called mild nerve irritation.

Fox, who turns 34 next month, pitched 10 2/3 innings before going on the DL in April. He has pitched fewer than 11 innings in four of the past six seasons because of elbow problems.

He has the ring. What more does he want? It's one thing to continue to strive for a championship, even when hurt (see Marino and Emmitt Smith), yet another thing when you already have the championship in the bag and played a major role in it (see Fox). I wish him the best and hope he doesn't do anything stupid to impair post-baseball activities.
