I thought the Marlins were doing the right thing in limiting callups as their manager prefers to manage a smaller group rather than having the clubhouse clogged with unfamiliar faces, many of whom he knows little or less about.

 

But now, with 30 games in 27 days and real chance to win the wildcard within our grasp, I'd like to see the front office bring up four or five more guys to pinch-run, fill-in, and perhaps contribute in a meaningful way.

 

I can't see Mike Lowell playing 30 games straight.

 

Or Conine or Luis or almost any of our guys (except JP who will, I suspect, play every inning of every game). The existing bench is going to be stretched to the breaking point. You gotta love the Lenny Harris' of the world but let's face it he's a defensive liability, Mordy is a terrific competitor but with limited range, Cordero, regardless of what might be said, is not going to be anywhere near 100% when he suits up.

At the same time, having a Dillon or Padgett or Wathan or Borland (not mention a handful of AA guys) available (and I'll leave it to the FO to decide who might be added because they know what they're doing, something that should be obvious to everyone) has to add to the playability of the starting eight, even if Toby is the guy who mops up in a rout rather than wasting someone else or Dillon only plays six innings at third to give Mike a rest.

 

It will be interesting to see how it all works out and what moves the FO makes but I for one, recognizing the downside of bringing in guys with little or no ML experience, would like to see us maximize our options by expanding the roster.

Thats true. They can bring up players like Dillon and Wilson from AAA and give some players needed rest during this stretch.

Our guys have just had what 4 or 5 days off in a row? That is better than the all-star break and there is a month to go in the season. They are fresh, at least we should hope so. The starters should be able to start the next 20 games with all this rest without a problem. If in 20 games we are in it then you have to stick with what works, because then we would either be up a game or two or out by a game or two. But if we are out of it by then, then you can play the rookies.

I disagree, Easley can play pretty much everywhere and we've got Cordero coming back. Let's face it we're not going to be able to afford to play any games with more than 2 or 3 of our regular starters not in the lineup. Dillon plays the same positions as Easley, and Dillon is not better than Easley. Aquila is the best we've got as far as outfield talent.

 

I do think we could use all the arms we can get, and I don't understand why guys like Borland our Gracesqui aren't up here.

I don't disagree about Easley, but I think you'll find that down the stretch, after ten or fifteen games in a row, even Easley will be worn out. As for Cordero, the guy just had both knees operated on and has only had minimal minor league playing time, I just don't see him contributing to any degree. Don''t get me wrong. I'd love to write a "I apologize for what I said about Cordero" post come October 4th but I don't think it will happen.

 

In no way am I suggesting Dillon (or any of the others mentioned) should be starting, rather playing an inning or two in a 5-1 (Marlins winning) romp with Benito closing, just to give Mikey or other starters a little more rest. And I'm not saying he's better than Easley either, that's not the point.

Well if you have to play this amount of games over the next couple of weeks, bringing up these guys can't hurt. It's definitley a good idea to get some more pitching over here, and a couple bats of the bench would work as well.

Aside from Gracesqui, I can't think of anyone I'd say gives us a huge advangatge, and even he only is necessary because he's left-handed.

 

I don't want a bunch of AA or AAA guys going in any of those uber important games against the Cubs, and I'm actually a little astonished that we're going with AJ tonight. We could restack our rotation to get Pavs an extra start, and while AJ is doing awesome, I'd rather see Carl get that all important extra start.

 

As it stands now, we could run the rotation to have Josh and Carl go back to back on Friday in Chicago...very tempting
