November 2, 200422 yr Mike Redmond is one of the best back-up catchers in MLB. Looking at many "forum proposed" rosters, he is actually left off. Multi-injured last year, he hit 256. Lifetime he is 284, 348 OBP, 362 SLG, .710 OPS. Defensively, unquestionable. Handles pitchers very well. His heart is unquestionable as is his contribution on the bench and in the ClubHouse. Why is he being left off so many forum proposed rosters? Treanor is good but no where near a Redmond.

Mike knows his role and so does the FO. I'll be very happy to see him back in a Marlins uniform for 2005. :thumbup
November 2, 200422 yr that dude is staying you know the thing is that he can not be counted as a starter and that is why we need lo duca
November 2, 200422 yr that dude is staying you know the thing is that he can not be counted as a starter and that is why we need lo duca LoDuca is only a slight improvement over Redmond. We either need Varitek or a cheaper alternative to LoDuca. A lot of people were saying that we shouldn't have re-signed I-Rod last year, because if his age, but LoDuca is just as old as I-Rod and has had nowhere near Rodriguez's success. LoDuca hits like an $800k/year catcher. Paying him what he's getting paid now would be silly.
November 2, 200422 yr 2004: LoDuca .286/.338/.421 Redmond .256/.315/.341 2002-2004: LoDuca .280/.334/.399 Redmond .273/.336/.354 Heh. It's a significant improvement, but not much once you consider the position. As catchers LoDuca is slightly above league-average, Redmond is league-average. Whoopdeedoo. Give me the one who can block the plate, knows our pitchers and costs five to six million less. Then platoon him with "that DH" Josh Willingham to make up the difference on offense. blah blah Willingham is not ready blah blah He's got the best bat in our minor league system and put up monster numbers in a pitcher's park. His defense, which should be improved out of spring training, would be offset by Redmond and whatever extra offensive/defenseive/pitching production we can sign after trading LoDuca and Encarnacion's contract.
November 3, 200422 yr I think Red IS an important part of the clubhouse chemistry and is a good backup catcher. I'd take him over Treanor everything even, and hopefully we can afford him. I'd like to see Willingham get an extra year in the minors (AAA?) before we consider him full-time. I'm happy with LoDuca as starter.
November 3, 200422 yr The days of prospects spending a year at AAA is over. The AA has much better talent and ballparks close to sea level.

Remmeber that clutch hitting, hitting with RISP, and raw #s of homers and rbis are important as well. And loduca whose been an allstar the last few years wins in all those categories. Not to mention that when we got loduca other teams were running on us less, b/c of some unwritten respect

November 3, 200422 yr The statheads here and others seem to ignore the fact that LoDuca, within a week of joining the Fish, suffered a broken finger and played with it through the last two months of the season. We haven't seen the "real" Paul LoDuca, the one that Dodgers fans considered the heart and soul of their team.
November 3, 200422 yr Redmond is very polite, I met his wife, I hope he stays. His wife is very nice and Redmond seems that way, although I haven't said much to him except good luck or things like that when he stops or drives by.

Not to mention that when we got loduca other teams were running on us less, b/c of some unwritten respect 607428 Not a significant advantage. Pretty much a statistical tie. Runners on: LoDuca .290/.355/.392 Redmond .300/.372/.385 Scoring Position: LoDuca .312/.391/.414 Redmond .281/.367/.349 Close and late: LoDuca .248/.317/.350 Redmond .239/.306/.284 LoDuca was an All-Star because the lack of talent in the NL at the catcher's spot, and injuries to Mike Piazza and Sean Casey. I don't know why you think LoDuca shut down the running game. There were .108 steal attempts per inning against Redmond compared to .131 on LoDuca, .058 on Castro and .095 on Treanor. Granted LoDuca caught the bulk of the notoriously slow A.J. Burnett's innings and Castro did not. I thought one of the hidden factors of the 2004 season was how Castro/Redmond and our pitchers were going to adapt to losing Pudge. LoDuca is not better than either Castro or Redmond defensively. He does not hold the key to success despite what intangibles he holds as the longest tenured Dodger circa July 30th, 2004. The statheads here and others seem to ignore the fact that LoDuca, within a week of joining the Fish, suffered a broken finger and played with it through the last two months of the season. We haven't seen the "real" Paul LoDuca, the one that Dodgers fans considered the heart and soul of their team. 607441 I'd like to thank Jack McKeon for a player to further injury and inflating his All-Star's value while failing to put the best team on the field. The 'real' LoDuca is past his prime and will never hit anywhere close to 25 homers again. This 'real' LoDuca is not the best bargain at 1-yr $6MM or 3-yr $12MM.
November 4, 200422 yr I like Mike, BUT if given the opportunity to save money on a back-up catcher there are cheaper alternatives. There is no question he's a great defensive catcher, that has shown the ability to hit .300 and is a great teammate a leader from the bench. This will probably mean very little to the FO and they'll go cheap. i'd hate to see him go but I would understand.
November 4, 200422 yr Lo Duca is so overrated that he hit a popfly in the first pitch he saw wearing Teal. :plain :whistle :shifty
November 11, 200421 yr I think Redmond is history and Treanor will be the backup this year. The club saves around 600K to use elsewhere. Even though Willingham has proven he can hit in the minors, he still needs to prove it in the big show. His catching skills are average to below average. I see him more in a traditional power position role at third base in the future.

November 11, 200421 yr I don't see them letting Redmond go completely. I think he may retire and move as a coach into our minors. Problem is if we let Red go, the Braves will take him in a heartbeat.
November 11, 200421 yr Mike Redmond is one of the best backup catchers in the NL. I dont expect him to leave, he plays with so much heart and thats what makes him successful.
