NEW YORK -- Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg are the latest members of baseball's most exclusive club.

Boggs, a five-time American League batting champion with the Boston Red Sox who swatted out 3,010 hits, and Sandberg, a 10-time All-Star second baseman for the Chicago Cubs, were revealed Tuesday to be the only players voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame among 27 candidates on the ballot.

A select group of 510 members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America cast their votes, the second-most ballots filed in Hall of Fame history compared to the 515 writers who enshrined Dave Winfield and Kirby Puckett in 2001. A name must be marked on 75 percent of the filed ballots for a former player to be elected; 387 votes were needed this year.

The pair will be inducted during Hall of Fame Weekend ceremonies in Cooperstown, N.Y., on July 31, giving baseball's red brick shrine on Main Street 195 former players, 102 elected by the BBWAA

Good decisions!! Well deserved by both!

At least Gossage did a lot better thn last year.

Both good choices.

Now, with Sandberg out of the way, I expect Dawson to have a stronger chance next year.

Next year will be a pretty weak class, so Andre may have an outside shot. Sutter should finally make it. Maybe Rice...

But look at the class of 2007!

Gwynn and Ripken are no-brainers. Then we get to see how the voters respond to the new age steroid freaks like the Bash Brothers and Caminiti.

My boy Paulie will be overlooked, but that's okay... :notworthy

If Sandberg gets in, so should Mark Grace!

If Mark Grace gets in, they should just let every good defensive journeyman into the Hall.

Who needs voting and standards?!?!?!

Congrats to Boggsey and Sandberg. I can't believe the Hawk didn't get more support the same thing for Blyleven. Next years class looks like a stinker maybe some of these guys will that support. As for closers they've been getting screwed for awhile. Jeff Reardon didn't even get 5% his one year on the ballott, even though he was at one time the all-time saves leader and saved 40 or more several seasons, back when 40 saves were a lot. The same thing for Lee Smith who was far more dominate than Sutter ever was. Reardon and Smith were great for at least 10 years unlike Sutter who had 4 or 5 great years.
