February 9, 200521 yr Encarnacion stays in right (because, at this stage, defense is more important than offense because we're talking about the 7-hole hitter) I strongly disagree. If we learned anything from last season, a weak 7-9 will cause a black hole in the lineup that would cost the Marlins more games. It simply puts too much pressure on the heart of the order. Last season the Marlins offense often came alive in the later innings and the black hole prevented any chance of a rally. In fact, the extreme weakness of the 7-9 spots was perhaps the reason the offense came alive so late, as only 2/3 of the lineup was a legitimate threat to reach base. Therefore, if Pierre and Castillo did not reach base it would become far more difficult to score runs. I think the Marlins can only afford one Alex Gonzalez type player at the bottom of the order. His OBP is horrendous, but he has shown RBI potential and better power than Encarnacion. Also, good defense at SS helps the team much more than in RF. 680795 Last year's offense was of a completely different dynamic. Cabrera showed an overwhelming propensity to swing hard trying for extra base hits, and Lowell went into a serious slump that he never came out of after July. For God's sake, we had Paul LoDuca flip-flopping from 3-5 after he came over, and this is with a player whose specialty is a sharp single with power mixed in. Delgado fit perfectly into the middle of the lineup, completely changing the landscape, he's that much of an impact player. 1-6, our lineup features all-star caliber players at every spot, and the 3-4-5 of Cabrera, Delgado, Lowell is damn near flawless (I mean, you can't pitch to any of them now). With that much offensive potential 1-6, defense has to be brought into consideration. Admittedly, I haven't seen Delgado's defensive ability up close, so I can't judge, but I think there's little debate that we took a step back defensively by giving him the job and moving Conine elsewhere. Putting Encarnacion out in right does increase our team defense, and that makes our pitching better, and with better pitching, we win more games. Not that Conine would be bad out there, just that Encarnacion would be better. Now, if our offense sputters, and Encarnacion is struggling, I'll reverse my stand on this, but for right now, I think we should go with the outfield that gives us the strongest corner outfield arms in the division. Either way, this argument will resolve itself because both are coming off shoulder surgery, and as it is Conine is no lock for S.T.; health wins at this point.
February 9, 200521 yr we cannot have mr.marlin on the bench. thats just wrong. I say if we cannot get rid of ENC then let him be the defensive replacement in late innings. i rather have conine in right than cabrera.
February 9, 200521 yr Cabs stays in LF no matter what, and then its either going to be Conine or Encarnacion at RF, i rather have Conine because of his offense, i dont think jeff will do a bad job in RF, i think he will do a very good job. i think that Encarnacion will start the beginning of the season cause of jeff's rehab but then everyone will see him struggle offensivly and Conine will get the job.
February 9, 200521 yr There are good arguments either way. Perhaps the ultimate decisions rests on whether the defensive downgrade from Enc to Conine is greater than the offensive upgrade and vice versa. I certaily like the idea of having a stellar corner outfield set however.

My problem is who is a better RFer defensively, cabrera or conine. Unless enc does somehting in ST with the bat that impresses people I'm almost sure mckeon rather go w the niner hitting
February 9, 200521 yr That is where having Conine off the bench works out. He can replace Encarnacion in late innings when offense is needed. Joe Dillon. :mischief 680820 That might be a good Idea :woohoo
February 9, 200521 yr Enc > Cabs > Conine Enc in right and Cabs in left. Easy as that. Conine can come in and Pinch HIt or give guys a break at RF, LF, or 1B. Sounds good to me. Mr. Marlin will get plenty of playing time. As for the guy who said put JP at RF..you have to keep Pierre at CF...that speed is the only thing preventing runs when there are deep fly balls. Remember, CF at PPS (Dolphins Stadium) is rather large.
February 9, 200521 yr Jack will stick with whoever is hot but I think Enc would put +260 +15 +65 thats not bad for 8 or 7 bat :fitness3

February 9, 200521 yr If neither Juan or Jeff are traded then the solution is simple. If Juan can hit in line with his career averages (.270+, 20HR, etc) then he should be the RF everyday. If he starts slumping put in Conine. I really like the idea of Conine on the bench, being the primary backup, and a very dangerous backup at 4 positions.

February 10, 200521 yr Author QuickGold, i'd really like to hear the logic you used to make that absurd statement saying "Cabrera has a terrible arm, definintely not an outfielders arm." Since when did have 13 outfield assists which was SECOND in the league equate to having a "terrible arm" as you put it? Worst. Post. Ever.
February 10, 200521 yr Another argument for starting Conine over Enc.. Conine has led the major leagues in sacrfice flies twice in his career.. and led the league in sac flies in 2003. There is a thing called quality outs and Enc, being a strictly pull hitter, does not give us those. Just pointing that out. Conine has had 26 sac flies in the last 2 years.. Enc has had 26 sac flies in his career Making quality outs and sac flies in the bottom part of the order is important.

Conine can hit to all part of the field.. Enc just pulls the ball. Quality outs are a good thing. I'm just stating a fact as if it wasn't obvious enough already that Conine should start.
February 10, 200521 yr He also has better RBI abilities. 682053 Who... Enc? You think Encarnacion is a better run producer?
February 10, 200521 yr hmm ok dude.. i guess sarcastic remarks is all i can get from you. Just go play your fiddle.
February 10, 200521 yr That was a bogus statement about Cabrera's below average arm. He has a powerful and accurate throw. He's only 21, and it's only going to get stronger. My only concern is his gimpy run. He looks like he has a sprained ankle when he runs after a ball. It's pitiful, really :confused But he's still better than Encarnacion in the OF. Somehow, even with limited running ability, he gets to balls, and he'll dive for anything. God bless him. Go Fish!
February 10, 200521 yr But he's still better than Encarnacion in the OF. 682059 Everyone's entitled to their opinion but defensively I don't see how you can make such a statement. In no way am I taking anything away from Miggy but Enacarnacion is heads and shoulders above Cabrera (at this stage of his career) and will be for some time to come. I fully expect Cabrera will one day be an excellent outfielder but he needs more experience before you can put him in the same league as Enc.

Encarnancion should start because of his defense and a ahealthy Juan Encarnancion can produce solid stats.
February 10, 200521 yr Produce what? A .310 OBP? 234th out of 259 players in productive out %? The guy has no plate discipline whatsoever.. plus its not like Conine is a bad defender anyway. Conine offense outweighs Encs defense because Enc is an awful offensive player and Conine is an above average defensive player.
