How big was the Marlins' three-game sweep of the Phillies in Philadelphia on Fourth of July weekend? A major league source said the Phillies and Marlins had been talking about a deal that would have sent rookie center fielder Marlon Byrd and disappointing right-hander Brandon Duckworth south for Juan Pierre and Brad Penny. That would have left the Marlins with nobody signed past this season. After the sweep, the Marlins suspended those talks. Soon after the Marlins landed Urbina, Rangers General Manager John Hart personally called Adrian Gonzalez to welcome him to the organization. Even though Mark Teixeira is playing a lot of first base for now, Texas will move him to left when Gonzalez is ready. ...

*I don't know if true or not. I do know around that time the Marlins were listening to offers for Penny. After yesterday I doubt Penny is going anywhere. Although it appears he's grown up as pitcher. He could always go back to the old Penny.

The Future 2B?

One major league executive on Marlins Triple-A second baseman Kevin Hooper, who figures to get a look as Luis Castillo's replacement should the Marlins deal the pending free agent: "Hooper doesn't have any power at all. He's a singles hitter but he can run. He can steal bases. He's not Castillo but he's fast, plenty fast. And his arm is stronger than people realize. He can play shortstop. He's a very intelligent player with good instincts. I like him."...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!! 470 ft!!!

Albuquerque slugger Robert Stratton, who leads the minors with 29 homers, won the Home Run Derby at the Triple-A All-Star Game last week in Memphis. Stratton, who could get a shot with the Marlins later this season, outhomered Louisville's Brandon Larson 10-5 in the final round. Stratton's longest shot traveled an estimated 470 feet. For his efforts, the career minor-leaguer received $1,000 plus another $500 in Old Navy gift certificates

As usual, very interesting Ed. I think that trade with the Phils would have been devastating for years. Byrd is not high on my list, he has ability, but there is something I am not totally sold on...

I hope both Hooper and Stratton can come up and have the chance to make a difference when rosters expand. I think Stratton should come up to fill out our bench, but we really cant send anyone down right now either.

Very, VERY intriguing Ed...

Glad we swept the Phillies!

ED BYRD right now is hot as hell and they have found the Leadoff man they have been looking for.

He has lit up The Spo's and Mets since moving to the leadoff spot.

Duck has pitched well in his last few starts.

I really doubt they would do this deal mainly because Byrd is a guy who can get you 15 HR's next year and get about .300 AVG.

He has amazing hustle something that is refreshing with The Lazy Bums in Baseball right now.

If this deal would happen THe Fish would rape The Phils.

I agree with rune, this is his rookie season and he's already hitting .300, I'm not crazy about Duckworth but he has good stuff.

thatk god that trade didnt happened i like Pierre better than Byrd , i would like a trade Duckworth for Penny but no Pierre in there

Byrd can get you 30+ SB, 15-20 HR's, 320 AVG

I really don't see why everyone here thinks he is The Plauge.

i dont think he is a plauge , but i like Pierre better he can get 50+ SB , 0-2 HRS , 35-50 RBI , and 300+ avg

Byrd is going to be a heck of a player, but people don't realize how good pierre is going to be. He's going to lead the majors and steals every year, and I can see him contend for a batting title down the road.

i wouldnt mind raping the phillies personally.

i wouldnt mind raping the phillies personally.

lol , either would i

lol , either would i

You just said that it was a bad deal!?

Now you said you want the deal!?

Which is it?

I personally think the Phillies would be raping the Marlins in this deal. Penny is MUCH better than Duckworth, and Pierre is only 25. How old is Byrd, 23? Pierre will be the best lead-off man in baseball like someone said for years to come. It's yet to be determined what Byrd is really capable in the Majors.

Yeah your right, only raised his batting average 100 points within a month.

Also happens to be lighting up in the leadoff spot and has come through with clutch hits ever since moving.

Yeah he sucks your write Josh

Show me where I said anyone sucks. I never said that.

Marlon Byrd has talent, no question. BUT, you don't know if he will be a great player, an average player, or a flop. You have no clue, seeing that he's played 4 months of MLB. With Pierre, you know what you're getting, and not only that but he's still getting better. He'll probably steal 60+ this season. He'll probably bat . 300 this season. He's not a streaky player, in fact, I can't recall one slump over 0-10 from him this year. He's also a pretty clutch hitter. Duckworth still has some potential, but will never be that good. I think over the past two outings Penny has shown the glimpses that everyone knows he is capable of. When he puts it all together, he'll be amazing.

I'm sorry, but the Phillies would have gotten a STEAL from the Marlins...

i like Marlon Byrd but I wouldnt like the idea of trading Juan Pierre

especially if Luis Castillo is gone after this year

Also you say Pierre has proven himself actually last time I checked he has not been Mr. Consistency.

Because if you remember last year was a blowout season so I don't see how you can say he's a guaranteed great player.

Batting in the high . 280's with 47 SB's is a blowout season? :banghead I know the year earlier he had 200 hits and all that, but you can't consider that a blow out season. And he's been Mr. Consistancy in Florida, so...

I don't remember saying Blowout, I may just be senile which is likely lol.

But... Yes .280 for a leadoff man is not great and you know it. He went down from his first season so I don't honestly know how you can say that's consistent.

Also playing not even a full season does not make you consistent. If they were the case then I guess Marlon Byrd is consistent in your own eyes.

How do you know that without Luis he won't slip. It's a lot easier knowing that a guy like Luis is right next to you in case you do fail to get on.

You did say blowout...lol

And he hit . 289 in his second year, hardly a big fall off... While he has been here he's been consistant. I think your version of consistant is different from mine. Consistant means that you almost never go through a slump, and you usually always bat your average. Pierre almost never goes through slumps, and constantly bats his average.

Byrd has been on and off all year. A streaky player, not a consistant player.

Josh your batting average going 40 points from your first full season to the second is streaky.

It's not exactly Consistency.

Also like I said before, how do we know that Juan will dip without the protection of Luis?

You can say you don't agree but you know that having protection around you REALLY helps you in how you play.

Pierre didn't have protection in Colorado, and he hit . 330 and . 289 there. Plus, Pro Player should be his protection. It's probably better for him the Colorado...

And even though his average dropped from his rookie to sophmore years, he still consistantly hit his average. He didn't slump much at all...

Going down 40 points is consistent?

Actually when he was there Helton and Walker were really good, Helton still is really good.

So what makes you think he can keep it up if Luis is gone. I'm not saying he will go down like a rock but Luis has to help that average out. Just the fact knowing that you have a guy like Luis behind you can lift pressure off of you.

for the record, leadoff hitters dont need protection Josh
