Accord
Placed RHP Antonio Alfonseca (right elbow) on the 15-day disabled list and selected the contract of RHP Travis Smith from Triple-A Albuquerque. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...ns.jsp?c_id=fla http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...layer_id=134000

Ramp
Marlins purchased the contract of RHP Travis Smith from Triple-A Albuquerque. Why? Smith had a 6.00 ERA in three starts for Albuquerque. His 6.20 ERA in 40 2/3 IP for the Braves last season lowered his career ERA to 6.61. Meanwhile, Frank Castillo has a 1.59 ERA in his three starts in Triple-A. There's also better choices in Bart Miadich and Bryan Corey. Apr. 22 - 6:15 pm et I agree... Why Travis?

WildMarlinMan2003
Puzzling...Id rather see Messenger or Frank Castillo. I hope he pitches like he did this spring. I know one thing.... He won't be dating any Leean Tweeden's or Misty May's.
BullDurham
A pitcher with glasses. That's either trouble for us or trouble for the batters, but it can't mean something in between.

Flag Man
Smith for blow-outs, up or down. We have better pitchers in the Minors right now. IMO we want them to get the work. Smith is contractually more attractive to warm a Pen seat. That said, I wish him well (for the few chances he'll have.) I respect the journeymen. Certainly their goal here is to not undermine the the ability of the team to win, and you have to believe they have scounting and Isotopes coaching reports on the players to base their decision on. Doesn't it make sense that the FO believes that Smith was the right guy at this time?

rferry
Smith probably has some options left that Castillo doesn't. Castillo will be up when the rosters expand to 45. 752147[/snapback] What are you talking about? A player has three options (three years in which they can be sent to the minors) from the period he is added to any team's 40-man roster to his eventual free agency. After that, they must be exposed to waivers if sent down mid-season. Travis Smith, Frank Castillo and 99% of the guys on most AAA staffs have no options. rferry
BTW, I think the reason why Smith was brought up and Castillo was not is that the team feels Castillo is valuable as a starter. With a pretty healthy rotation and Moehler, the team didn't need a starter. They really don't need a 7th reliever, but whatev. The 12th pitcher they were going to bring up was going to come out of the 'pen. They didn't want to shift Castillo's role, not happy with Howard's development and didn't want to rush Messenger. minus_13
I meant 40... honest mistake. To be fair, Smith's last option was exercised last year when he was with Atlanta, so I am still off there. Whomever was called up would be exposed to free agency once Alfonseca returns. I was simply trying to explain that Castillo will be a late season call up so as to not have to worry about exposing him to free agency once Alfonseca returns from his injury. Jesus, there certainly are a lot of wannabe Beinfests here...
