MARLINS NOTEBOOK

Run-producing Mondesi fits Marlins needs (and wishes)

Source: Yankees discuss trade

The pace is quickening on the trading front for the Marlins, who have talked to the Yankees about Ra?l Mondesi in their quest to obtain a run-producing outfielder, according to a major-league source.

While the Marlins also are interested in Padres outfielder Rondell White, Mondesi also fits their needs.

The veteran right fielder is hitting .259 with 16 home runs and 48 RBI. He is in the final year of a contract that pays him $13 million, all but $7 million of which is being picked up by the Toronto Blue Jays.

It's uncertain what the Marlins would have to give up to obtain Mondesi.

But the Yankees could be willing to part with Mondesi, who angered management when he recently complained about playing time.

The Marlins, who closed to within three games of the wild-card leading Phillies with Saturday's victory over Philadelphia, could be ready to pull off a deal within the next couple of days. Thursday is the nonwaiver trading deadline.

Personally, I'd rather stick with Cabrera. Mondesi has a bad attitude and can be a cancer in the clubhouse. Plus, we're winning with Miguel in LF.

If it aint broke, then don't fix it.

Thoughts??

Me either I would rather have Cabs or TH playing in LF. Unless we get a huge upgrade in LF don't pull the trigger.

I think Mondesi is a better acquisition than White. I would like for us to stick with Cab and TH in platoon (or at least righty, lefty matchup) but I think if you have a chance to go out and get another quality bat and not give up too much to get it, do it. It all depends on who the Yankees want for Mondesi - they may not want much b/c he is retiring after this season and is making a lot of money. Plus, he is whining about PT, which with us he certaily would get.

I think Mondesi in our lineup gives our offense a huge boost - teams would have to take notice. You send Cabs back down to tear up AAA until next year. I think that would be a very solid move. It just goes to show you what options are coming up today and we dont know what tomorrow may yield. Maybe the Pirates get desperate and ship Giles off to a team with little in return. But if I were to rank our possibilites, Mondesi would be right behind Giles and right next to Guillen. I dont know if chemistry would be a problem though and breaking up this current team could go either way (by that I mean sending Cab down). I think the players would be excited to get a big bat added to the lineup though.

Mondesi has always had promblems with hitting for average.

I don't think he's much of an offensive upgrade over Cabrera (how are Mondesi's RISP numbers?).

He has a good glove and a cannon arm but Cabrera has a good arm himself.

Not much of an upgrade(Not to mention his attitude.)....I still want Rondell.

This may make you re-think your position on Mondesi, as it has mine. Mondesi is batting .184 with runners on (174ABs), .154 with RISP. Batting in the 5th adn 6th spots, he has been productive (in the .300's), but most of his ABs have been in the 8th spot. He is a better hitter with no one on than with runners on. He makes Lee look clutch. Mondesi is a gaping hole in the Yankees lineup, making too much money with no future. I'll pass.

Now White? .277 with runners on (with no one on, .270). .222 with RISP. a lot of his success (.299) has come in the 3 hole. We would have to move him down, but he seems a better option than Mondesi right now. Rank him above Mondesi at this point.

Yeah...I've always wanted White in left over anyone else.(Although I don't think we need to make a trade we have been winning and perhaps sending down Cabrera would ruin the chemistry?).

White is pretty much a Cliff Floyd type player. Average Fielding and arm but can hit for power and has nice speed.

But Cabrera is a rookie and White is a veteran...I still don't know if I'd rather have Cabs stay in left or Rondell.

If were gonna trade for mondesi then i rather keep cab's mondesi can hit that good no more!

I hope for real that we don't get Mondesi he's hardly an upgrade over Cabrera. He would cause MANY problems specially with the chemistry.

I admit, I was intrigued by Mondesi at first, thinking he could bring a big bat to our lineup, but it appears he is not an upgrade at this point. I just hope we dont make a trade just to make a trade at this point. I think the only player I feel we should deal for is Giles, and that depends on what the Pirates want in return. We may have to give up Bautista to get him, and I am not that thrilled about that. I think we keep the current team intact and keep our future intact as well. We are improving, and at this stage that is a success for this current ownership group.

Here is another thought that occured to me, but it may be along the same lines as damning the future for now. We could trade AJ Burnett, straight up even, for Giles. We have some good young arms in the minors who may be ready by the time AJ is, and Giles would certainly play a lot more between now and then. I dont want to give up AJ, but it is a thought.

When he first came into the league I thought Mondesi was going to be an offensive machine for years.

At this point it's tough to tell what he'd bring. Potentially he can still put up good numbers, and maybe he just needs to get out of New York. But his swing looks like it's gone downhill & he's hitting for a poor average these days.

I'm not in a big hurry to make a deal right now. Cabrera's going to get more and more comfortable every night and we're already seeing him make strides. I'm not saying he's Rondell White or even Raul Mondesi by far, but I think he'll be able to contribute.

I'd still put Rondell White at the top of the list.

Interesting thought about AJ & Giles jonnylons, but wouldn't it be contingent on our being able to keep Giles? And I don't think they could afford him. If AJ comes back healthy, I'd hate to have lost him for a 2-month rental.

Giles is signed thru 2005 i think (cape would know)

So if we could afford A-Rod would you not take him because he hits .208 with RISP and is "unclutch" ???? LOL, comon guys see the light.

2002 Season

Brian Giles had another big year for the Pirates, though he did it in relative anonymity by playing for a club suffering through its 10th straight losing season. He finished second in the National League in both on-base and slugging percentage, despite having little lineup protection. Giles' 135 walks set a Pirates' single-season record for lefthanded batters, and came up two short of the club's overall mark that was set by Ralph Kiner in 1951.

Hitting

Giles is one of the most complete hitters in baseball. He hits for power and also is an extremely patient batter who will take a walk. There really is no way to effectively pitch to him. He turns on inside pitches and generates enough power from his compact body to hit outside pitches with authority to the opposite field. Though pitchers routinely try to work around him, Giles rarely gives in by chasing a pitch outside the strike zone. Since arriving in Pittsburgh after the 1998 campaign, he has collected at least 30 doubles and 30 homers every year.

Baserunning & Defense

Giles is deceptively fast, as he takes choppy steps when he runs. He will steal a base if the pitcher quits paying attention to him and also is aggressive on the basepaths. He has played all three outfield spots during his four seasons with the Pirates, but settled into left field in 2002. Giles has above-average range for a left fielder. His arm is better than many runners give him credit for, as he had 13 assists last season.

2003 Outlook

Giles shows no signs of slowing down and again should be a major force in the middle of the Pirates' batting order. He is a bargain in today's market, as he is signed through 2005 with yearly salaries of only $7 million.

Im VERY against giving up Castro in any deals and it seems the Marlins are easing there reluctance to part with his services. We wont have Pudge next season and probably wont have Redmond, leaving us with Castro...if we lose him we'd have to resign Redmond for what would be too much....

Would Willingham be ready next season? i mean he is already 25..

Would Willingham be ready next season? i mean he is already 25..

Depends on how he comes back from this injury...He was tearing up Carolina before he was hurt. I'd say if he came back and dominated the rest of the season he would have a strong chance to make the team depending on what catchers return (Red, Pudge, Castro)...We also have Matt Treanor producing well at AAA...plus his dad is the coach..so... :lol

Mondesi would be a risk. You don't know how he would hit NL pitching, but if he comes cheap it might not be too much of a risk...

"If it ain't broke, then don't fix it."

The media down there has to stop b***hing about improving a team that is great already and that all they try to do is tear down. Go back and hide under your rocks.

He's played in the NL before.

But that was 3 years ago.

I think White is the best fit but I agree with Smamrock on trading castro.

Sham, I agree with you that we shouldnt deal Castro. But the only thing I can make of the Marlins continued interest in trading him, or what seems to be a recent trend anyway, is that perhaps they are working with Pudge to keep him around. Pudge may just want to stay put, he is close to home, feels comfortable, and sees the Marlins FO took a bit of a chance on him where other teams wouldnt. If the Marlins deal Castro, I wont accept anything less than Giles in the deal AND Pudge would have to be back next year. Anything else is a step backwards.

I love the way your thinking but let be realistic on the financial side of it.You really think Marlins front office can afford what you suggested or are they willing to take a big step by adding salary?

You think we should get Mondesi? Cabrera has been doing great lately and our 3 outfielders are solid. We wont have no where to put him only if the Marlins want to send Cabs back down....
