Rumors that could effect the Marlins

Zito had a terrible April, but has been improving since with a 3.00 ERA so far this month. He'd be a nice addition to the rotation, particularly now with Josh's recurring blister problems and the disappointing perfomance of Leiter.

I don't have stats, but off the top of my head, I think he struggled mightily against teams in the NL East during interleague so far.

Vs Atlanta:

1-0, 5.40, 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 6 K, .211 OAvg

Vs Washington:

0-1, 3.00, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 7 K, .238 OAvg

Those are the only two NL East Teams he's faced according to espn.com

The games he gave up 4 or more ERs were against Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Seattle, Boston, and ChiSox. His other 10 starts he gave up 3 or fewer runs.

with the amount of arms we just drafted i think if the bullpen still sucks come july and lidge is still available, i dont see why the marlins wouldnt trade Olsen and another prospect (not Hermida) to the astros for him.

Alfonseca, Mecir, Jones, Lidge as the closer, and maybe Spooney would be one hell of a bullpen to put in the post-season.

Beckett's blister problem still seems to be there so getting another starter is a definate. Zito may come at a very high price just because of what he has done and what he can do, cheaper options might be Brandon Claussen if the Reds really are looking to unload for some prospects or some consistant vet looming out on the wire somewhere.

I don't see a need for another bat, this offense is fine where it is. Just needs to show up more often like it did today and it'll be fine.

Lidge is clutch. He's a great closer and can deal w/ pressure. He did almost completely silence the best offense of 2004 in the NLCS last year.

Bring Lidge in moves Jones to set-ip and mota to middle relief or vice-versa. If we can get Lidge cheap (which wont happen) I say go for him. If not lets stay w/ Mota and Jones.

Seeing starting pitching might the team's top priority here's a few you might see on the market soon...

Toronto's LHP Ted Lilly

Detroit's LHP Mike Maroth

Pittsburgh's LHP Mark Redman.

and of course the guy I've been pushing LHP Joe Kennedy

Im telling you guys, the trade for Zito is almost complete.

However, we have to be realistic. We are not going to get Lidge. Other teams are willing to give up alot more for him.

Hint: Mets.

Barry Zito was charged with four runs ? three earned ? in five innings against the Braves today but did not factor into the decision.

Mark Ellis threw a sure double-play ball away in the third inning, allowing Marcus Giles to score and putting runners on first and third with one out. Zito pitched out of the jam to escape with just one unearned run. Still, it was a mixed bag for Zito today. He struck out six and two of the runs scored on a wind-aided Andruw Jones fly surprised even the batter when it turned into a homer. However, he also struggled with his command, walking six and throwing just 54 of 100 pitches for strikes. Zito is 2-7 with a 4.47 ERA.

Barry Zito dropped to 2-7 on the season despite limiting the Nationals to two runs over six innings tonight.

Zito struck out seven and walked three. Both runs scored on a homer by Nick Johnson in the sixth. Zito has allowed four runs or less in 12 of 13 starts this season, but still has a 4.41 ERA thanks to giving up eight earned runs in one start against Tampa Bay. He deserves better than two wins, but the Athletics offense just has not been helping.

Jun. 4, 2005 - 1:41 pm et

A San Diego radio station reported Friday that the Padres are targeting Barry Zito in trade talks.

''Get used to it,'' Zito said. ''It won't be the first rumor you hear with my name attached to it, I can guarantee that.'' Assuming they don't think they'll be able to get more for him in December, the A's very likely will part with Zito in July.

Barry Zito, who was shelled by the Rays in his second start of the season, got some revenge tonight, holding Tampa Bay to one run in seven innings for his second win.

He gave up five hits, walked two and struck out. Zito has only given up more than four runs in that one loss to the Rays, and he has a 3.15 ERA since the beginning of last month.

May. 27, 2005 - 11:15 pm et

Barry Zito gave up just two hits and one run but still took a loss for the sixth time this season.

He walked four and struck out seven. Zito's 4.85 ERA is very poor by his standards, but he easily could have won at least two of those loses. He'll continue to drag his ERA down and the Athletics' offense has to get better at some point, so selling low might not be a good idea.

May. 22, 2005 - 10:49 pm et

Barry Zito fell to 1-5 despite allowing three runs -- two earned -- in 7 2/3 innings against the Giants tonight.

Zito was very good tonight, but Moises Alou had a line-drive homer in the fifth to account for two runs and two ugly errors from Keith Ginter in the eighth resulted in another run. Zito gave up six hits, walked two and struck out four.

May. 18, 2005 - 2:01 am et

Barry Zito walked a career-high seven tonight, but he allowed just three runs in five innings against the Red Sox.

Plenty of patience from the Red Sox, but the breakthrough didn't come until after Zito was pulled. Next up for Zito is some revenge against Tampa Bay, the one team he's given up more than four runs against this season.

May. 7, 2005 - 12:03 am et

Barry Zito pitched well again tonight, allowing three runs in 7 1/3 innings against the Yankees.

Zito's ERA could be quite a bit lower if manager Ken Macha wasn't always trying to squeeze every out he can from his ace. Zito gave up just one run through seven innings tonight. He wasn't removed until allowing three of the four batters he faced in the eighth to reach. One scored before he left and another after.

May. 3, 2005 - 11:04 pm et

The A's have rearranged their rotation so that Barry Zito and Rich Harden will each pitch three games during a 12-game stretch against the Red Sox and Yankees which begins Friday.

Zito is scheduled to start Friday against the Yankees and Wednesday in Boston, and then again in Oakland against the Yankees on the 15th. Harden goes Sunday in New York, next Friday against the Yankees and the 18th against the Red Sox.

May. 1, 2005 - 7:35 pm et

Barry Zito earned his first win by limiting the Mariners to two runs over seven innings today.

He only fanned one, but he didn't walk anyone. He's pitched pretty well in each of his last four starts, lowering his ERA from 11.57 to 5.84.

Let me add by saying that if in the rare situation that we get Brad Lidge, it would be foolish to trade Guillermo Mota.

He's having a rough time, but over the years he has always been a good setup man. Plus, a bullpen of Mecir+Mota+Jones+Lidge would be lights out.

GET ME LIDGE!!!!

I'd like to see a long-term dependable closer...For years, when you play the Padres you know Trevor Hoffman is coming if you don't score enough by the 9th inning. Braves for years, you had the threat of Smoltz and again you had to score runs or face him. I'd like to have an identifiable closer for years that other teams know THEY will face if they don't score enough runs.

Wanna see other teams' fans go: "Damn, we gotta score in the 8th or we're getting ?????????? - game over!"

I think the Dodgers are willing to give up Gagne...

i think the dogers would give ganye uup for a good bat, maybe a combo to get him?

812209[/snapback]

send Encarnacion back to L.A. !

:mischief2

You guys understand Gagne is injured and maybe DL'd for some time? And while the chances are remote at this moment, his ligament may require season-ending surgery.

but during the end of the season, he could really be a factor when the game are REALLY meaning full and we need some one like ganye to close it out, and i would rather send conine rather then enc, just my opinion

Lidge is too expensive for us to trade for. I dont think Zito is anything special anymore but he is pitching in the AL and pitchers who come fro AL to NL tend to do better (i.e. Clemens, Randy Johnson (Seattle to Hou/Arizona), Vasquez, et al).

Quick, the way I'm reading your comment is that Lidge would cost too most, in terms of talent traded to acquire him, rather than his salary, which is $500,000 this season and probably a million next season (a steal compared to what bonafide closers get). Am I correct?

The only reason the Astros are making Lidge available is that they realize how many teams are looking for closers, and they realize that they'll be able to get a plethora of prospects in return for Lidge. Basically their selling now that Lidge's price is at it's highest.
