Pavano was obviously amazing last year but tonight had another horrible outing for the Yanks. Are we better off w/o him seeing what he's doing this year or can he just not handle the pressure of pitching in NY for the Yanks?

I think the fact that Pavano is on the highest pressure team in the western hemisphere has something to do with it. Didn't think he was going to be this bad, though.

Pavano definitely over-performed last year. That's not to say he's not a good pitcher, but last year he pitched like an Ace. He's a good third maybe second starter, but not an Ace. The yankees grossly overpayed for him. Plus he's a contact pitcher with a bunch of geriatrics behind him. I haven't watched Pavs at all this year, so I don't know what his defense has looked like, but there's no way that the Yankees are as strong behind him as we were. So that could add to his runs. Beinfest4Prez is right too, he's in the biggest pressure cooker of the sports world and the team's struggling. In Miami he was used to people barely knowing the Marlins existed, and now he's in New York where every game is an even. Hopefully he can come around and pitch better as the year progresses and through his contract.

I haven't seen Pavs this season but I bet the pressure is getting to him. They just can't take the field and enjoy it like its simply a game over there.

It was a fluke, many people said it last year, but nobody wanted to belive it.

Pavano is in a new league, he needs to adjust to the hitters, parks, etc. just like Delgado had to do with the Marlins.

Pavano is also pitching under a lot of pressure, keep in mind its Yankee stadium, and he is expected to pitch lights out every time. Take Randy Johnson for example, a Hal of Fame pitcher getting ripped almost every game. Its a different ballgame there...

He's below .500 for his career, so I would have to say that last year was moreso a fluke than anything else.

2 Factors

1. DH (pitchers coming from the NL dont realize what luxury they have having a pitcher bat every 9 ABs)

2. Yankees (It takes a special type of player to play for the Yankees and deal with NY media and fans)

I have to agree with FL on this one.

He is a good pitcher, but not an ace

Pavano is in over his head a bit in NY.

I'm not saying he would win another 18 games with us this year, but I do believe he would perform better in a more laid back environment. Pavano is a bit of an introvert and thrives when he is not in the limelight.

Slow down everybody, he had 2 good starts in a row until this last one. He has had some really impressive starts with the Yankees, the problem with Pavano's stats is that he'll have some god awful games. And I mean horrible ones. 1 out of every 3 of his starts will have a line similar to 4 IP 12 H 6 ER.

While that's not really something to be proud of, because 2 out of those 3 are great starts, it leaves fans with hope that maybe he can start putting it all together for all of his starts.

I believe Pavano will turn it around... this season, when he pitches well, he does so in back to back games atleast... he has a few ND with a good 6 ip, 1 er performance, as well as 10 hits and 5 er in 5 innings..... I have a feeling he would be dominate throughout the playoffs like he was in 2003, and how Lieber was the Yankees best P last year in the playoffs. When the entire team is in high spirits and on a winning role, Pavano will heat up. This last game vs the Cubs, he blew, and a few plays could have helped him out last night. He will do better

Two words: Javier Vasquez

Pavano had a career last year. He's underperforming in New York and will get better, but never perform like he did last year again.

I like Pavano but ....

bottom line is the Marlins were correct in not giving him 4/40.

The drop from .718 defensive effeciency support to .631 hasn't helped a pitch-to-contact pitcher like Pavano.

not a fluke, but it was probably his beat year...

Players having a great year on their walk year to follow it up with a tank job? Color me shocked.

:plain

Pavano was in a contract year last year.

Has he lost focus now that he is earning the big bucks?

Gag me with a spoon Fritz.

Thats ridiculous and an overreaction, you call this season a tank job? He's had several VERY GOOD starts that I can think of off the top of my head. Is he posting a 2.50 ERA? No. But this is far from a tank job - it's just an average job.

Yes he is actually

It is definitely just being in yankee stadium. check out his splits

G GS W L SV CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA

Away 7 7 3 3 0 1 1 47.0 47 20 13 6 6 23 2.49 1.13 .260

Home 8 8 1 2 0 0 0 40.1 67 37 31 8 10 26 6.92 1.91 .368

Pavano had a career year with the Marlins last season. And I knew that his numbers would go down when we gave him up to the Yankees, and I think the main cause of that is the immense amount of pressure on all the players who perform in Yankee uniforms. (Of coarse it's harder to pitch when you don't get a free out every 9 batters, but still, that's not THAT big of a factor IMO)

I think if we get Pavano back, or any team gets Pavano that don't put so much pressure on their players to perform, then he can be a quality #2 starter. Pavano isn't as good as he seemed to be last year with us, but he's not as bad as his numbers show with the Yankees this season.
