August 3, 200323 yr I really enjoy his work but I have a couple of things to add. *Reliever Scott Sauerbeck? The Yankees weren't the only ones after his services. The Marlins wanted him badly, industry sources say very true and Felix Heredia was the name they turned to once Sauerbeck was off the market. *The Marlins still wanted Drew, an American League source said, but now they wanted to flip him to another team for two more usable pieces. The Yankees, who had just shipped Raul Mondesi to Arizona, may have been that team, although the source said the Red Sox were pushing hard for Drew at the end as well. It was the Yankees. Once word got around that LHP Brandon Claussen was the Yankees trade bait to get a bat. The Marlins wanted in on it. The Marlins would have gotten Drew turn around and traded him the NY for Claussen *Meanwhile, the Marlins still could deal for Pirates veteran Matt Stairs, a perfect lefty complement against tough right-handers, if he gets to them on waivers. They nearly had a three-way deal in place on deadline day, said a source from one of those teams. They are waiting too see if he clear waiver, probable Tuesday or Wednesday. I thought I mention Stairs a week or so ago :whistle *Teams that talked with the Marlins said they declared just four prospects off limits: Double-A right-hander Denny Bautista, Class A Jupiter first baseman Jason Stokes, Class A Greensboro outfielder Jeremy Hermida and Class A Jupiter right-hander Don Levinski. You can technically add recently signed first-rounder Jeff Allison to that list; baseball rules prohibit them from trading the right-hander until the one-year anniversary of his July 22 signing Don Levinski was been ask for by other teams, also Trevor Hutchinson could be included on that list. All in all the Marlins are still looking, so don't be surprise too see___________ :whistle http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...0,407359.column Down on the farm RHP Donnie Bridges(former Expos' TOP prospect) continues to interest me a lot. What he is doing this season is one of the best stories in the minors. Bridges would allow one run and 4 hits in 6 innings of relief, walking 3 and fanning 8 to move to 9-1 on the season and help guide Double-A Carolina to a 5-1 win over Greenville in the completion of Friday's suspended game. Bridges' numbers for the season are fantastic. He's 5th in the SL in ERA (2.69) and has given up just 69 hits in 110.1 innings, fanning 92. Only 69 hits in 110.1 IP! Opponents are hitting just .183 off of him. Watch him next year. Out state prospects Venezuela for years has produce top talent to the ML. Only second maybe to the Dominicans in baseball. The Marlins have there share In Miguel Cabrera and Alex Gonzalez. Well now they might have another in the name of Mauro Zarate. Zarate pitches for Cocorote(the Marlins team down in Venezuela) and is a Marlins top prospect down in the VSL. The 6-foot-2 righty is 2nd in the VSL in Ks (101) and 5th in ERA (1.63). The 19-year-old Venezuelan has only given up 61 hits and 18 walks in 88.1 innings. A word of caution VSL prospects are that these leagues feature some of the crudest prospects in baseball. But Zarate has been dominant thus far. We will see how he fare once he hit States.

August 3, 200323 yr Author "Edcanes, any idea who might be hitting the waiver wire? Any big names or just someone that could help us?" Wildcard "BIGTIME" players are always sent through waivers. A team puts a max of 7 players a day through waivers. The Marlins sending players through waivers right now. It does mean they'll trade them.
August 3, 200323 yr What's the advantage of sending people through waivers, if you dont plan to trade them or send them down?
August 3, 200323 yr What's the advantage of sending people through waivers, if you dont plan to trade them or send them down? To just get rid of them...
August 3, 200323 yr Stairs has a strained groin, but he should be fine yea, every year big time players go thru waivers(atleast the ones with the HUGE salaries) Brandon Claussen would have been nice......
August 3, 200323 yr WOW! What an awesome article from mike showing us just how busy Admin was. I love reading about the inside workings of baseball GM's and their minions. Stairs would be a perfect fit and correct our only glaring weakness....lack of lefty pop and could fill in for cabs against tough righties. Cabs seems to handle lefties and average righties just fine, but throw up a very experience righty up there and he looks silly most times. That would be a fine platoon. :thumbup
August 3, 200323 yr Edcanes, thanks for the update on Zarate. Sounds like another gem. Take that Billy Beane!

We have two power hitting lefties off the bench in TH/Banks (although Banks is a switch hitter).
August 3, 200323 yr They arnt exactly power hitters, but have decent pop. Stairs has legit above average power and would be the first option to PH or platoon with Cabs. Overall a significant improvement.
August 3, 200323 yr They arnt exactly power hitters, but have decent pop. Stairs has legit above average power and would be the first option to PH or platoon with Cabs. Overall a significant improvement. Stairs couldn't platoon with Cabrera becaue he is a 20 yr. old rookie. Cabrera needs to play everyday.

August 3, 200323 yr Banks has 20+ HR power... How can you possibly say that about a guy who has 13 career HR? And in his most AB's in a season (219) he hit 5HR...comon WC dont just throw out comments.
August 3, 200323 yr Stairs couldn't platoon with Cabrera becaue he is a 20 yr. old rookie. Cabrera needs to play everyday. I agree, Stairs would be perfect just coming off the bench. Why don't we just trade for Lenny Harris?
August 3, 200323 yr If you guys dont think Stairs is a significant improvement over TH and Banks then just go look at the stats, because its all there in plain numbers.
August 3, 200323 yr Stairs couldn't platoon with Cabrera becaue he is a 20 yr. old rookie. Cabrera needs to play everyday. I guarantee not matter what you think, Stairs will platoon with Cabrera, if acquired.

August 3, 200323 yr I have never been totally thrilled with Stairs - a softball player playing MLB. But the guy puts up solid numbers, and his lefty power is certainly a plus to this club. If we can pick him up, that does give us a very strong bench. All of a sudden you have Holly and Stairs down there. Fox, Mordecai for D, Banks for some more pop. You got a really solid bench. It is funny how Berardino cannot come out and praise the Marlins FO or even Beinfest at all - he has to do it, reluctantly it seems, in a round about way by riding Epstein's jock. I think Ep has done a pretty good job assembling that team, but everyone needs to calm down. Sure, the Red Sox blew us apart - but their record is not a whole lot better than ours. I also dont think they are going to be able to overtake the Yankees - who are not playing good baseball right now. Also, I think the Red Sox have a weak farm system and are depleting it further, a little too much for my liking. As for our untouchables, Berardino is only pointing out the obvious. Of course Stokes is untouchable - we traded Ad Gon for Urbina. Bautista is one of the better lower level prospects in the game right now. Levinski's name was being tossed around (in that Drew deal...) but he has great numbers and is going to be a very strong pitcher. You get the feeling that Berardino is on the outside and what at one time he thought was worth the risk, he now sees he is losing out. I am wondering what Le REtard has to say about all this, he has been unusually quite - maybe his mouth is too full of crow to complain...
August 3, 200323 yr Lebatard said good things in an ESPN interview, but nothing in print yet, I guess. Our farm is shaping up to be one of the big surprises this year, as we ranked in the middle of the pack this season, but are inching up with the development of guys like...Tom Merkle, Pat Magness, Donnie Bridges, Andy Roedhler, Lincoln Holdzkom, Casey Blalock, Josh Johnson...and a ton of others. Our 2001 draft is starting to look..AWESOME.
August 3, 200323 yr We won't get Stairs,we are set with our lineup. He makes 900,000$ this year. Banks makes 300,000$ this year (Money is involed you know. ). The only thing I can see is him replacing TH because he is cheaper and better (Never even said I wanted Stairs,Juanky.) And no Shamrock, Cabrera needs to play everyday to develope. Your sig is pretty funny though. About idiots.
August 3, 200323 yr at least half the roster will probably be sent through waivers. that means nothing though in reality many times. if a player clears waivers you can trade him. if he is claimed, only that team can acquire him from what I recall and you can pull a guy off waivers if he is claimed as well.
August 3, 200323 yr Stairs couldn't platoon with Cabrera becaue he is a 20 yr. old rookie. Cabrera needs to play everyday. I guarantee not matter what you think, Stairs will platoon with Cabrera, if acquired. :banghead no. He's frickin' 20 yrs. old.
