I don't think we would deal with a rival.

If they're giving the best offer, why not?

Becuase if all of the sudden Lowell gets hot(i know its a longshot) - then its horrible because it gives us less of a chance to go to the playoffs. We can't help our enemies!

If we wouldn't have dealt with a division rival in 2002 we would only have 1 championship ring. The Floyd trade got us Mordecai, Levinski, Wayne, Lloyd, Pavano. Mordecai helped us quite a bit, Pavano help us alot in 2003 and the following season, and Levinski helped us get Conine.

If the Nationals want to get Lowell or Encarnacion and are offering the best package I say we make te trade. I don't why they are interested in either though. I'll make the rumor Day for Encarnacion deal in a heartbeat.

Well, I'd hope we got something in return to help US as Lowell would be helping them.

I heard this/saw this/read this too, earlier today. I'm racking my brain, for some reason I think it was, some list of woudbe trades...sheesh I wish I could remember.

When I read it I discounted it an the rest of whoever was saying it. Maybe ESPN...it was like AJ goes for some ham and egger, Lowell goes for worse...the clear implication was the Marlins were about to have a firesale and give up on the season....

Seriously folks, who don't the Nationals want.

Where would Vinny play?

845637[/snapback]

Mikey would probably go to 1st.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rumors are true, Bowden trades for the sake of trading (look at all the outfielders they got, plus they still want PFunk and/or Sheff to go along with Byrd,Wilkerson,Church, and Sledge when he gets back)

it boils my blood to even think about trading to a contender within the division, especially if its to the cry baby frank robinson.

ill trade him Mike Lowell for Livan and a 3 minute segment on ESPN about how the nats dont get enough publicity.

still that in your pipe and smoke it jimmy!

Oh well. The Zach Day dream is over.

The Nats traded him and a toolsy Rule V outfielder for Preston Wilson. Church is now sitting on the bench and Wilkerson possibly on the market.

IMO they've hurt their playoff chances with this trade.

can this be confirmed? i cant find anything on this. preston wilson is overrated IMHO. his best days are behind him. he just happens to be one of the few corner outfielders available. and i agree that this did not help them. problem with Jim is he loves making moves for the sake of being active and making moves.

he was prob one of those kids always looking to trade his brown paper bag lunch in elementary school when he was a kid :whistle

Trading with the Expos in the past is not the same as trading with the Nationals now for several reasons.

When Floyd (I assume this is the trade you're talking about) was moved and we got a bushel of people in return including Pavano and Mordy, the Expos were an also-ran team being run on a showstring by MLB, not the more deep-pocket (because of the way they are drawing in DC vs Montreal), first place team they are now, and we were a team not thought of as competitive either, so in some sense it was a trade of convenience.

But now with the Nationals atop the NL East and us trying to find the pieces to catch up, the scenario is completely different. In fact, I could see us making a trade just to block them from getting someone which would make them better, even if the trade we made was not wholly to our benefit.

As for the Braves, I suspect the trade you're referring to was the Hampton trade, but again the net affect of that trade was the financial flexibilty we sought that helped make our 2003 run possible and it was made at a time when we weren't contending. That trade in fact helped the Braves win the division, something we certainly don't want to see happen in 2005, not when we're in third place.

I stick by my original premise, there is no (reasonably conceived) trade with either the Nationals or the Braves that would benefit the Marlins enough to make it happen.

I believe there are a handful of teams who we should not trade with. The Braves, Nationals, Cardinals, Red Sox, White Sox and the Cubs. I'll take my chances with anyone else. The rest will either be sellers or have a lesser chance of making the playoffs, as do the Fish.

Do I like the idea of trading with the Yankees and facing AJ in the World Series? Of course not. But I'd rather equalize talent in the AL East (Yankees and Braves) and let them slug it out, than make the stronger team, the Red Sox, even stronger.

The same goes in the National League East. We already have a fair idea that if we're successful in making it ito the playoffs, we're going to see the Cardinals. Helping any of those three teams, or the one team in the Central that might make a run at the wildcard, seems to me not in our best interest.

Here's Rosenthal's piece as posted 51 minutes ago:

Nationals to trade for Rockies OF Wilson

Posted: July 8, 2005

The Rockies have agreed to trade outfielder Preston Wilson to the Nationals for righthanded pitcher Zach Day and Class AAA outfielder J.J. Davis, the Sporting News has learned.

Before the deal can be completed, the two clubs must agree on how much the Nationals will pay on what remains of Wilson's $12.5 million salary. Also, Wilson must OK the deal because the Nationals are one of five teams to which he can reject a trade.

The Cubs, thought to be the frontrunner for Wilson, could re-enter the picture if the Nationals and Rockies can't work out the particulars.

The Cubs called up Class AA outfielders Adam Greenberg and Matt Murton Thursday after they sent Corey Patterson and Jason Dubois to Class AAA Iowa.

I found (I believe) the rumor page that started this thread. It was ESPN.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?id=2101737

Here's the part about the Nationals and Mike Lowell -

"Washington Nationals: Jim Bowden was always one of the busiest and most creative general managers in July while with the Reds. Now that he has a first-place team drawing big crowds and lots of attention, he should really be fun to watch. Bowden wants another top starter (Jason Schmidt, A.J. Burnett) to team with Livan Hernandez and has been calling around trying to upgrade at third base (Lowell)."

You may want to read the whole piece including the part on the Fish.
