July 24, 200520 yr Why is everyone so sure he isn't going to be back next year. Every post says we should "get Hanley Ramirez" for after Gonzo leaves. I am not so sure he is going to go anywhere, and if I had to bet money on it, I would bet he will be back for 3 or 4 more years. Plus, we already have a good SS prospect in Andido waiting. If it was such a sure thing Alex wont be back, dont you think the FO would shop him around a bit too?
July 24, 200520 yr I like Alex for his defense, but I wouldn't pay him any more than 2 million a year and I know some other team will. I kknow a lot of you guys overvalue (IMO) Gonzalez, but I don't think Beinfest will.

July 24, 200520 yr I wouldn't pay him more than we're paying Castillo. If he'd take that, I'm fine with the deal. If he wants anything close to Rollins, I'd rather play a rookie or even take Easley with his sorry SS defense.
July 24, 200520 yr 5-6 mil a year would be fair. Anything over that would probably be overpaying, though.
July 24, 200520 yr 5-6 million a year does sound right. However, I think someone will offer him 7-10 million. Too bad money constraints may force us to lose him. I'd like to see him and Castillo play middle defense for us for a few more years.

Oh well.
July 24, 200520 yr Author I bet Gonzo wants to stay and MIGHT take a discount to stay, or maybe not even command Rollins type money in the first place.

July 25, 200520 yr Because Hanley Ramirez would be an upgrade over Gonzalez over time and I would prefer Ramirez to Gonzalez anyday.
July 25, 200520 yr I disagree 5-6 million is way to much money to spend on Alex Gonzalez. All he is good for is defense. He is having a career year with the bat and his # still ain't impressive. I rather get the draft picks for Alex Gonzalez and then try to sign Furcal if he cost less than Alex Gonzalez and if the Braves don't offer him arbitration. If not I say trade for someone Jack Wilson or just call-up Josh Wilson or Robert Andino. If we give that much money to Alex Gonzalez it will be the biggest mistake the front office has made since it gave Lowell 32 Million for 4 years.

July 25, 200520 yr I bet Gonzo wants to stay and MIGHT take a discount to stay, or maybe not even command Rollins type money in the first place. 873425 I agree with this, I mean the Marlins kept giving him the chance to start even though he was Mr.Mendoza Line for quite sometime. Besides, I think he really enjoys playing with Castillo and wouldn't want to leave. As long as the Marlins are a contender i'm sure Alex will stay here.

If both Alex and Furcal cost the same amout of money I rather have Furcal. Look at the career #. Just cause he plays for the Braves and Alex plays for us you can be biased. I only give Alex the edge on defense.

Gonzo has always been an enigmatic figure. I figure he's good for at least accepting at least a 1 million dollar discount to stay where he is. Beyond that, I'm not so sure.

I feel better because it seems like the deep pocket Yankees and Red Sox don't need him. I don't follow enough of the other teams to give an informed opinion about them.

Maybe not for that much cash, though.
July 25, 200520 yr I wouldnt mind having him for 2 more years ... a couple more mil from the deal that he was given in 2003 im not sure about Andino, Wilson, or whoever else I still think seabass is a crucial part of the team and one that could come at a decent price for his production
July 25, 200520 yr 6 million a year for AGon is too much. Lets not forget how horrible he can be at the plate. I love the guy but if keeping him is going to cost us that much we can and should forget about it.
July 25, 200520 yr I hope we can keep him but I have a feeling some team is going to overpay to get him.
July 25, 200520 yr I figured the ChiSox were happy with Uribe. 873659 Uribe's been pretty bad this year (though to be fair he had a decent 2004) and Guillen has a relationship with Gonzalez dating back to their time together in Florida. Maybe it won't amount to anything, but the Sun Sentinel had a little blurb about it a few weeks ago, and I remember others (Rosenthal or Gammons maybe? don't remember who exactly) mentioning it at other times. In signing shortstop Jimmy Rollins to a five-year, $40 million extension last week, the Phillies may have weakened a division rival in 2006. Next to Rollins himself, perhaps no other player was happier to see that contract than the Marlins Alex Gonzalez. The deal provided a barometer of his worth on the open market. A free agent after this season, Gonzalez should command no less than a four-year deal based on his age (28) and defensive ability alone. Teams such as the White Sox, Mariners, Diamondbacks and Braves could engage in a bidding war for him. The Marlins have not approached him about an extension. -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/scor...uth.rumors.mlb/ Not sure why the Mariners (with Morse) or the D'Backs (with Drew in a few years) would want to invest long term in Gonzalez. Same with the Braves to a lesser extent.
