August 15, 200520 yr Josh Beckett - Starting Pitcher Josh Beckett sent the Giants' Randy Winn a note of apology Sunday. Beckett yelled at Winn after striking him out Saturday in the eighth inning because he thought the Giants were stealing signals. Afterward, though, he said he overreacted and should never have lost his cool. If apology notes become the norm in major league baseball, Hallmark will have to introduce its MLB line, with categories like ''Sorry I'm on the Juice,'' ''Sorry I Threw at Your Head'' and ''Sorry I Drove My Spikes Into Your Buttocks.'' Aug. 15 - 8:40 am et Source: Miami Herald Love how Josh lets his emotions take control on the field and fire it up. I also like how he can admit when he was wrong. Show signs of maturing and class. It seems as though the whole pitching staff has matured right in front of our eyes this season.
August 15, 200520 yr When Beckett gets like that you can almost feel the electricity, and you can see the effect it has on the players around him. It's good he apologized to Winn, but he should not ever apologize for being fired up. Of our big 3, I'd say Willis more than the other two wears his emotions on his sleeve, and it's pretty even on who gets the most fired up between him and Beckett(both can get rowdy). But, it's also good to see Burnett do what he does, more calm and collected. If he ever has an extreme emotional outburst(I know he's been pumped up before, but I dont think I have ever seen him as fired up as Beckett and Willis get) the opposing team better just try to get the bats off their shoulder in time. I liken Willis and Big Tex to a couple of frat boys: they yell, pound their chest, and pump their fists when something good happens, kind of like frat guys do after a successful keg stand. And you are right, you can see the maturity level rising, and thats a good thing, it means they will be able to keep their heads in the game in tough situations(but, of course, a fired up fist pumping is always welcome).
August 15, 200520 yr It shows how much Beckett has matured over the last few years. I don't think you would have ever heard him apologize for something like that when he first came up, so it really is nice to see. The last part of the article was hilarious though :lol
August 15, 200520 yr I hope he pitches like that for the rest of the year. It fires up him and it fires up the team in general.
August 15, 200520 yr This is the second time I will say this, but Beckett really does remind me of myself. When I was younger and I hit batters, I would usually apologize while they were on their way to first base. Also, if I could tell the pitch was heading their way, my follow through would look sloppy.
August 15, 200520 yr Author That's the 2003 fire I saw in his eyes the other night at that Giants game
August 15, 200520 yr I still think JB is a puss. Besides the 2003 postseason, he hasn't shown me that he can win the big games.

August 15, 200520 yr I know I'm about to get jumped on , but I just don't like Beckett much. He seems to have a fragile pysche as far as usually when things start to go wrong they tend to escelate when he's on the mound. Would I rather keep AJ or Dontrelle longterme?? Yep. They both are solid, and win games. When's the last time Beckett held his own against a big name pitcher? 2003? Also add the fact that one week it's a blister, the next an oblique, and the next a tummy-ache. He's a good pitcher, but he's not great IMO.

August 15, 200520 yr I still think JB is a puss.? Besides the 2003 postseason, he hasn't shown me that he can win the big games. 903337 What "big games" has beckett lost since 2003? 903357 The 2003 post-season and the games in the WC run are the only big games he's been in. He's obviously done well in them. His durability issues though are pretty bad.
August 15, 200520 yr I still think JB is a puss. Besides the 2003 postseason, he hasn't shown me that he can win the big games. 903337 Have we even played a big game since then? And by big I mean win or go home. What's that, no? OK then...
August 15, 200520 yr By big games I mean games that we should win when we need to win them. With his talent, when Beckett is on the mound we should be able to count those games as wins. We can't. If he pitches against a big name he loses almost every time. I used to think that as long as a pitcher has a good ERA the wins aren't his fault. I don't agree with that notion anymore. For the most part, why does it seem like when Willis starts we win?? Even if the other pitcher is pitching well, Dontrelle is usually a little bit better. With Beckett, if the other pitcher is decent its the opposite. He pitches a good game, but not quite good enough.

August 16, 200520 yr If I had to choose one Marlin pitcher to win one game, I'd choose Beckett. I wouldn't count on him to be a regular season horse but in the post-season a pitcher like Beckett excells in big games.

Not that he isn't capable, but he wasn't exactly a "big game" pitcher that postseason.
August 16, 200520 yr Of our three main guys I like Beckett the least. I agree with vini, maybe not for the big game argument, but definitely the blisters and back problems. Beckett is just not a tough guy, IMO.

Not that he isn't capable, but he wasn't exactly a "big game" pitcher that postseason. 903477 '03 was Dontrelle's rookie season, the year he jumped from AA ball. I think he deserves a little slack that year. On my big games point, I understand nobody on our staff has pitched in big games like Beckett has. He was basically perfect in those situations, I'm not arguing that. My point is that throughout the year there are "big" games. Are they postseason games? No, most definitely not. They are however important if the team expects to get into the postseason. I'm talking about games to stop a losing streak, or pitching against the opposing teams best pitcher, or when the bullpen is decimated, etc. In those situations Beckett has not performed very well. Anyone who says he has consistently looked like the same pitcher that dominated in the '03 postseason is crazy. He has a lot to be proud of from that performance, but IMO it's time for him to start carrying us in the regular season, A.K.A. act like the true ace of the staff.
