August 16, 200520 yr the top line is his projected stat line for this year and the bottom is his line from last year i just thought this would be interesting to see what you guys thought
August 16, 200520 yr Great post...I've been thinking about this very topic for a while now. I'm very interested to see how the seamheads weigh in on this issue... :mischief2
August 16, 200520 yr I voted for the current version of SeaBass, but I would like to see a little more power out of him. I still think that significant increase in BA and OBP is what got me to vote for the current Alex.
August 16, 200520 yr i want the one who hit 20+ homers... but at the same time i could give a f*** less if he comes back next year or not... if the braves wont sign furcal ill take furcal.... wha eva ill miss his defense but his bat i might neva miss that again
August 16, 200520 yr The one who could homer. Singles out of the 8 spot usually go to waste, even if you are lucky enough to do it with no outs.
August 16, 200520 yr I'll take the OBP A-Gon. I'm not sure which is really more valuable in the context of the 8th spot, but here are a few reasons why I like the OBP Alex. Makes less outs by getting on base 5% more of the time. That translates into less inning where the pitcher is forced to leadoff. Don't know, though. Great post.
August 16, 200520 yr This is something I've been thinking about all year. The 2004 version of AGon was probably a better fit for a #8 hitter, to go deep before the pitcher bats, but I feel more confident this year, when singles/doubles AGon steps to the plate.
August 16, 200520 yr in the 8th spot I was the higher slugging. In the 6-7 spots I would want this years Alex. I rather have him hitting more power.
August 16, 200520 yr Good post I'll take this years version. His productivity is similar. He's not hitting the homeruns, but he's driving in more runs on base hits than he did last year. Also, he's getting on base more which means our lineup is starting with Juan leading off more innings rather than the pitcher. His stats won't show how much that helps us, but it's huge for the team.
August 16, 200520 yr this is what a .270 ba does for you in the 8 spot... out of every 10 ab he gets a hit 2.7 out of ten times. now thats pretty good but the problem lies that 90% of the time the pitcher is gonna make an out. here is what 20 hr does ...drives in runs and doesnt leave it uo to the pithcher... you pick
August 16, 200520 yr Author I like this years alex if only for the fact that i feel more confident with him at the plate last year I was expecting him to always always always swing at that 0-2 pitch in the dirt, and this year, he's refrained from doing that as much. The run production is certainly a great thing to come out of the 8th spot though. It's really a toss up for me.
August 16, 200520 yr I'll take this year's Alex, even though I miss his OFFENSIVE outburst/Career year last season. His BA/OBP is going up and his defense has been better I think this year than last. In the eight spot he is doing just enough, cause you have to remember out of our five-man rotation...3 or 4 out of the 5 can hit average to above average (Vargas, Willis, AJ and Josh)
August 16, 200520 yr I went with this seasons Alex. The stats that I care about most on offense are BA and OBP. In the end, all a hitter is trying to do when he goes up to the plate is get on base. Hitters don't go up swinging for the fences. And on offense, what matters is how many runs you score, and the more you get on base, the more you score. Just because he hit 16 more home runs last season doesn't make for a .41 lower BA, and a .58 lower OBP. If he continues like this then he'll finish with a lot more runs than he had last seasons, which is what matters. So I'm going with the hitter, not the swinger.
August 16, 200520 yr In the 8th spot, I will definently take last year's version of Alex. Hell, I'd take last years in the 7th spot also....batting ahead of Lowell.
August 17, 200520 yr 2004 version. I mean, if neither are going to be able to hit sliders away, I'd rather take 20 Bombs...it makes the failures in clutch situations easier to swallow.
August 17, 200520 yr Had this discussion with heckeroo over the weekend. I'd rather have the old Sea Bass. Sure he's hitting something like .280 but it never seems like he gets a big hit. And like someone said, most of his singles as the 8th guy go to waste. Last year he probably hit like 8 3run homers.
August 17, 200520 yr You should add the number of runs in the statline. If he scores more this year than last it would make up for the missing RBI's...if not, last years version is better.
August 18, 200520 yr The funny thing about it is the 2005 version is more likely to win the gold glove.
August 18, 200520 yr Last year's. The HR dept. is lacking this year. And that's what's killing us.. Team members LOB.
August 18, 200520 yr nothing was more frustrating than watching seabass bat last season until I got to see the 05 version of Lowell out of the 8th spot ill take the 20+
