Speaking of bat boys, I recently became friendly with a guy that was a bat boy for the Toronto Blue Jays from 1997-2003. He says he met a lot of players and the nicest one he ever met by far is Carlos Delgado. He says that on his first day as a bat boy Carlos came by to personally introduce himself and welcome him. Carlos is awesome. :thumbup

Somewhat off-topic but how did he become a bat boy?

I think he said something about his dad working in the kitchen or something...and he knew the old GM

*right place right time*

He said that his dad was friends with the Marlins clubhouse manager, he's been a batboy since he was 14.

He's 19 years old! 19! NINETEEN!

Where is Marlins2003 now? You have some statements you wish to retract?

926139[/snapback]

I'll be glad to respond to your malicious post and no, I don't feel I have to retract anything.

I was driven by and responding to a published article (by the Knight Ridder news service, parent of the Miami Herald) which identified the batboy as an "11-year-old". Believing as I did at the time that the article was factual I think even you can (if you have an open mind) understand why I was appalled, that this was a very young kid, not a 19 year old college student.

So you and anyone else who cares, thinks I'm making this up, here is a link to the article that I quoted above. This article appeared in numerous places who subscribe to the KR news service.

And here's the operative part of the article:

Marlins really milking things too far this time

BY TOM REED

Knight Ridder Newspapers

AKRON, Ohio - (KRT) - The Florida Marlins apparently have adopted a zero-tolerance policy on all performance-enhancing substances.

Why else would the organization suspend an 11-year-old batboy for trying to a drink a gallon of milk on a dare from Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny?

--------

That said I'm still appalled how Penny tried to shift the responsibility for what he did from himself to the Fish and making comments like ''He drank it down to the last drop,'' Penny said. ``But he couldn't hold it in. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.''

He's on right now!!!!!

HAHAhA IT IS THE MANCHILD BATBOY.

MIAMI- A blonde woman identified as Hollyberry has kidnapped Tim Spooneybarger, AJ Burnett, and Jeremy Hermida last night from Dolphins Stadium. Reward if Holly is caught and the three MLB players are found safe.

but your comments were on 8/24...and I can't find anything about an 11-year-old batboy before 8/25.

Maybe you read something similar somewhere else?

It was actually on the KR news service first as a newsbyte that he was 11 and then later (on the 24th) it was distributed nationally for next day distribution. Same as Mike Berardino's Sunday column is frequently available online Friday (or as soon as he posts it in the system even through it's for Sunday distribution).

A little hint generally. A lot of the Herald sports stuff that doesn't get listed online until 3:04 am each is early morning in fact avaliable around midnite, 1am through Google news or the San Jose Mercury website, which publishes when they get it, not when the originating paper e-publishes it.
