September 10, 200521 yr I say Andruw Jones, without a question. He should unanimously win it.. The Braves would be nowhere without him. He has carried them. The case I'd make for Pujols isn't based solely on this year. He's been unlucky in that he has had MVP type seasons, but always lost out to Barry. Since now Barry's out of the league, I think some voters may give him votes, to make up for the last few years... But based on performance, solely this season, it goes to Jones...
September 10, 200521 yr Andruw Jones The way I look at it, there is: statistical MVP - Lee statistical MVP on a playoff team - Pujols guy who has carried his team most - Andruw Jones
September 11, 200521 yr Pujols has carried his team offensively. That team has had so many injuries and he's been incredible. Jones has carried his team as well and guided the rookies, but I think people underrate Pujols because he's so consistently amazing. He's one of the best players of all time. Pujols - .337/.432/.631 39 HR 107 RBI 14 SB 116 R Jones - .273/.356/.596 47 HR 119 RBI 3 SB 87 R Stats show that Pujols is superior in every category other than HR and RBI and he's the far more selective hitter. Granted, Jones has the better defense, but Pujols' offensive numbers are undeniable. Best player in the league.
September 11, 200521 yr Granted, Jones has the better defense, but Pujols' offensive numbers are undeniable. Best player in the league. 939147 Best player in the league (this year) not named Derrek Lee. corrected it.
September 11, 200521 yr How do the numbers work on MVP voting? Is it possible if Jones and Pujols split the 1st place votes, that Lee could get practically all the 2nd place votes and win? I mean, who wouldn't vote Lee second? I think he deserves that at least.
September 11, 200521 yr Wow.. Pujols has 14 SB?? 939162 Yes and he's still running on occasion on a bad heel.. Pretty surprising for a slow guy.. Honestly.. He's slow and his heel acting up again makes him slower.. He's limping around bases right now and had a stolen base the other day.. .. But he does have 14 stolen bases.. Pujols went 2/3 today to bring his avg up to .338 and DLee went 2/5 today to higher his avg to .343.. Pujols within striking distance for his 2nd batting title though..
September 11, 200521 yr the Cardinals are in first place because of their overacheiving pitching staff How can you make that comment about the Cardinals pitching staff, and not say the same thing about the Braves staff? I guess it just doesn't fit your arguement.
September 11, 200521 yr the Cardinals are in first place because of their overacheiving pitching staff How can you make that comment about the Cardinals pitching staff, and not say the same thing about the Braves staff? I guess it just doesn't fit your arguement. 940138 Probably because the Braves staff doesn't have the Cards' staff's numbers (and the fact that the Braves had 3 of their starters out for a few months). Don't forget bullpens.
September 11, 200521 yr Probably because the Braves staff doesn't have the Cards' staff's numbers (and the fact that the Braves had 3 of their starters out for a few months). Don't forget bullpens. 940139 They still have the 5th best pitching staff in the NL! I never said the Braves staff was as good as the Cardinals, but their rotation is a big reason their in First Place!
September 12, 200521 yr Pujols' time has come John Donovan, SI.com Andruw Jones lit into a couple more pitches Sunday, launching two home runs as the Braves crossed off another win and the growing "Jones for MVP" chorus revved up once again. Without Jones this year, the Braves would be scrambling to stay afloat. He is, at the very least, their most valuable player. When Chipper Jones went down with an injury, Andruw was there. When all the rookies came up from the minors, Andruw showed them the way. When the Phillies and Marlins and Nationals and Mets made their runs, it was Andruw who beat them back. Yes, Andruw Jones is having a heck of a year. He leads the majors in homers, with 49, and he leads the National League in RBIs, with 121. But you know what? Give me Albert Pujols for MVP. Pujols leads Jones in just about every other meaningful statistical category: on-base percentage, slugging percentage, combined on-base and slugging (OPS), extra-base hits, total bases, batting average (that's not even close), hitting with runners on, hitting with runners in scoring position, walks, strikeouts, walk-to-strikeout ratio (that's not close, either), steals, runs, runs created ... Yes, the Cardinals have other stars, including center fielder Jim Edmonds. But the Cardinals, like the Braves, have had plenty of upheaval. They started the season with a new middle infield combination and a new catcher. They have played without third baseman Scott Rolen for most of the season (and he's now out for good). Outfielders Admin Walker and Reggie Sanders, key components to the lineup, have been injured for extended periods, too. [More in URL] Very good article in favor of Albert.
September 13, 200521 yr the Cardinals are in first place because of their overacheiving pitching staff Tell that to the Houston Astros. Better yet, tell that to Roger Clemens. The best pitching in the world won't help you if you can't score runs.
