being a marlins fan in boston

Featured Replies

sorry to spend a(nother) topic on a personal gripe, but if there's anywhere people will identify with it, it's here...

was watching the boston-chicago playoff game today with a mixed group, mostly bosox fans, was talking baseball one of them, when it came up that i was a marlins fan, his response:

"the marlins should just pack up and leave", along with some generalized criticism about our front office, ownership and fans.

i've lived in southern new england 3 of the past 5 years and one thing that irritates me to no end is the arrogance that red sox/ yankees fans (is there a difference between them at this point anyway?) have towards fans of all other teams, and this attitude that any sun belt or expansion team basically shouldn't even be there. this same crew of red sox fans spent a lot of the game pointing out how 'inexperienced' the white sox fans are, even as boston's crap pitching was getting slammed.

anyway, it's good to know from this site there are a lot of loyal marlins fans who are as loyal, knowledgeable and hardcore as any of the fans of the 'real' MLB teams.

that's my 2 cents

Nice game, Clement! HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loved it! Sweet!

*Gives dap*

Yeah, my madrina and her family in Boston considered the Marlins an "allied power" of sorts against the Yankees.

Still though Boston and NY are probably the biggest bandwagon towns around that manufacture some sh*tty fans. When you see someone wearing a Marlin cap on the street you can bet on them being a pretty decent fan unlike the multitudes of people wearing Sox/Yankee caps.

Hey I'm in boston too; I go to BU. What college do u go to?

I'm going to have to agree with stranded.

The people you were talking to were probably the MaysBonds-type faction of Red Sox Nation.

I'd love to see both the Red Sox and Yankees gone within the first round... I'm rooting for Chicago in the postseason

Go Yankees...too many bandwagon sox fans who "suffered" all those years before winning....I find it hard to beleive a lot of people outside of Boston were "suffering."

i went to a marlins game earlier this year and sat next to the red sox fan from boston he spent the whole game telling me and my dad how in boston they always sellout and how bad the fans down here are i wanted to smack him but i think the yankee fans are way worst

1. The Marlins attendence doesnt correlate with their winning, its fact, you dont need Red Sox fans to tell you this.

2. Every group of fans has arrogant people in the fan base.

3. We get it that you do not like the Red Sox.

4. Dont generalize a fan base on people that you meet.

5. I liked the Marlins when I came to this board, and not because of what they did in 2003. It has since changed.

6. Living in the city of a sports team you dont like sucks (I lived in Chapel Hill a while back) and will skew your perception of the nationwide fan base.

7. Any city coming off sports championships in 2 sports, is going to be arrogant and crass.

8. The general perception nationwide, whether you like it or not, is that the Marlins do not have great fan support...so dont be shocked when you hear that, it doesnt mean that a fan base is arrogant because of that.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but the thing that drives me nuts about the Sox is that EVERYONE is a fan. I don't mind true fans all that much that have followed the team for years(Although I have come across a couple annoying ones, but what team doesn't have these types of peopel), but its incredible the amount of bandwagon support this team gets and many of these people act like complete a**holes. I can't count the number of people at Elon that support the Sox yet have no clue who the hell is even on the team. It's the 'cool' thing to do now adays I guess and it drives me insane because they act like obnoxious fans.

I am in boston too, I go to Suffolk Business School. Where do you go?

you are correct, so Red Sox fan should STFU about the Marlins attendance issues. Specially during a game to strangers, and with the "in your face" attitude

Thats the world of sports as we know it.

A team that wins has bandwagoners, if we dont win it this year, it will empty...and I'll be glad. The Red Sox will always be at a bit of a disadvantage of that because alot of Yankee haters become sei-Red Sox 'fans' just because they root against for the Yankees.

The Cowboys, Patriots, Red Sox, Yankees, 90's Chicago Bulls, The Lakers, The Heat, UNC and Duke Basketball, USC and Notre Dame football - all have experienced this and do experience it.

Bandwagoners are like the tide, they go in and out.

But dont condemn the team and the true fan base because of bandwagoners, it isnt accurate or fair.

And Freshfish...didnt he say he was conversing with them? I doubt they came up to him and started spouting anti-marlin remarks. And Im not sure the best way to see what a fan is like is to talk to him when his team is getting pounded in the playoff opener.

I'm glad you say don't condemn the team because of bandwagoners because I think a lot of people condemn Eagles fans and Philly fans because of the actions of some....well i think that's a double standard..There are normal Eagles fans but because of the idiots a lot of people hate them. Don't tell anyone else not to criticize a team when you do close to the same thing.

In response to Flamarlins3's comment, I'm in agreement. Being in Boston myself and having everyone know me as a Marlins fan, it can be a pain sometimes. I don't know if it's that they dont like the Marlins or what, but everyday I have at least one person come up to me and tell me what a fake team the marlins are. An interesting thing I've been thinking about is EVERYONE's attitude towards the Yankees. Every single person (except myself) that is from New England has a hatred of the Yanks, even if they arent a sports fan, it's just interesting that a dislike for one thing is so widespread even among a group that it does not effect at all, it just seems a little lame.

i see what you're saying, and overall i do respect how hardcore a lot of boston fans are. but after living here a few years i do think a lot of boston fans don't think you're a real team (or a real fan) if you haven't been around 100 years or whatever. maybe it comes with the territory of a long-standing fan base, maybe not, but it can certainly wear on you after a while.

6. Living in the city of a sports team you dont like sucks (I lived in Chapel Hill a while back) and will skew your perception of the nationwide fan base.

Wow, that's gotta suck, dude. Gives me chills just to think about. Then again, I believe the last time I was over there was getting run out of Kenan Stadium by the mob as one of the few Canes fans to watch that travesty. If only they knew we went to Duke too! :plain

Meh, I have been a Sox fan my entire life. Its weird, but I think that was the first baseball cap I was given other than the Yankees, so I kinda fell in love with it and grew to love the team. Gotta have a start. And then the Marlins came and they are now my team, but I will always be a Red Sox fan, no matter what.

It's different in Boston though. I go to BU and Fenway Park is basically in my backyard. It is so hard to get a Red Sox ticket to any game, whether it's against the Yankees or the Devil Rays. However, just a few years ago, you could walk up to the stadium box office at game time and get pretty good seats, just like you can at Dolphins Stadium, except Dolphins Stadium holds about 65,000 (for baseball) and Fenway Park only can hold 35,000.

It's safe to say the Marlins average about 20-25,000 fans per game at home, it just looks so empty because the Stadium is so damn big. This is also in a town where football is the main sport and the Marlins (to most) are a fun way to get through the football off season. In Boston, it's all about the Sox. When the Pats played in the Super Bowl last season, you wouldn't have even known it. I saw one person on the streets wearing a Patriots hat that day. When the Red Sox were in the playoffs and WS last year EVERYONE was wearing Sox apparel. Even the high rise dorms had "Go Sox" in their windows.

Sorry to be rambling on like this, but the point is that the Red Sox have been around for decades longer than the Marlins and are in an established baseball town surrounded by about 100 colleges in a 10 mile radius with a bunch of people (like me) who wanna see some good baseball. Dolphins Stadium is in the middle of about three big counties in South Florida, but nonetheless you have to drive to get the stadium. For colleges here, all you have to do is jump on the T.

The Marlins have "no fan base" for many reasons, the Red Sox have a huge one for even more, it doesn't make them a better franchise though.

Having said that, I like the Sox, I'm rooting for them, but at heart I love my Fish and if they were to ever play the Sox either in an inter-division game or the WS, I will proudly sport my Marlins apparel on the streets of Boston.

Is Miami really a football town? Or are people just Dolphin bandwagoners from the 10+ years in which this team was good? Dolphin Stadium wasn't really full last year when they tanked. :mischief2

Miami is a bandwagon city.

Miami is a bandwagon city.

Very true, but just for the sake of argument, if the Dolphins and Marlins made a similar personel move on the same day, the Dolphins would get the majority of the local media coverage.

Attendance is a whole different story, the people down here only show up sporadically if you're winning, but as far as what gets "top billing" I think it's in this order:

Dolphins

Heat

Marlins

Panthers
