Pick a Manager.

not that anyone puts much stake in what Hank Goldberg says, but he mentioned this morning that a lot of baseball people think very highly of Ron Washington.

I suppose Girardi would be fine, but I've heard him in interviews every once in a while & he sort of rubs me the wrong way sometimes. I'm really hoping for Fredi Gonzalez, though I'm not entirely sure why. Just a gut feeling I guess.

I believe Goldberg called him "Ken" Washington this morning. lol

My guess is Goldberg wouldn't know "Ken" or Ron Washington from Adam.

I haven't heard anything bad about Washington, but that's not to say I've heard overwhelmingly good things either.

He's respected enough to be mentioned in just about any managerial vacancy, but at the end of the day, if he's that good of a candidate, I doubt Oakland lets him leave.

Probably not. He'll find a reason to criticize any choice the Marlins wind up making I'm sure.

We won't be able to afford Torre.

There aren't a ton of big money teams in the market for a manager, plus he'd be getting $13 million if he's fired, or probably around $8 million if he's bought out...I don't know if money's the biggest thing for Torre.

To be honest, I think it's more likely to say that he's not going to manage next year before we say he's going to be too expensive.

All good points, but given that is Torre going to be willing to work for around $1M, which is more than McKeon made last year? I believe the FO is staying clear of veteran managers due to salary limitations.

I never thought of it that way, good observation. Either way, I think this is moot considering Torre will likely be back with the Yankees next year; he won't be fired...Steinbrenner may try to push him into resignation by getting rid of Cashman and Stottlemeyer, but he won't be fired, and I hope the Marlins don't wait around long enough to see if Torre and the Yankees negotiate a buy-out.

Fredi.

I love his resume: three time manager of the year in the minors, has studied under the best manager of our era, and has worked for the the marlins before.

After being in their clubhouse for three years, he knows how the Braves "work". That in itself might give our guys a bit of a mental boost when we face Atlanta, and heaven knows we need any edge we can get over them.

Plus, I do think being bilingual is an enormous advantage in this day and age. Part of a Manager's duty is to cultivate a good clubhouse environment. Therefore, you want your manager to be able to relate to everyone as well as possible, and it's easier to accomplish that without a language barrier.

Lastly, he's young. Jack McKeon can complain all he wants about player egos, and criticize them for not having the values he feels they should, but the fact of the matter is that no amount of complaining can change the state of the game. And the state of the game is that players are spoiled. As a manager, you need to figure out what each player needs from you to perform at his best, not expect him to conform to your expectations. Some guys need their balls massaged, and others need a good kick in the ass. The point is you need to flexible. A young manager will have grown up with the same values as the current players, so there will be less of a gap there. We need someone who will close rifts between personalities, not one who makes them wider.

Guys I've always said Lou, and I am not changing my mind that this team full of little brats needs fire to mature them like men, but if we get Joe, am all for it.

I'm ambivalent about who the next manager is but I have to say Pinella was very impressive in the broadcast booth last night. Surprisingly so.

Honestly what does the manager of the A's really do? First off it's an AL team so no big pinch hit decisions to make. The A's organization loathes bunting or stealing so that takes some more decision out of the hand of the manager. He fills the line-up card out and takes a couple of walks to the mound. Any of us could do that. I can't even remember the name of the previous guy, you know the one that took them to the playoffs and then went to the Mets from which he disappeared off the face of the earth.

After listening to Lou Pienella, I disagree.

I agree. I like him too. He's extremely knowledgeable. He hasn't won 1500 games by accident.

I agree 100% Lou is need for the Becketts, Encarnacion, Gonzalez and so forth. Luckly we have guys that know how to hustle...but I remember Encarnacion JOGGING to the fence to get a ball...I wanted to jump through my tv and deck him! I know what Billy Martin and Maybe Lou would have done...Juan would be asking himself why is Jeff coming outta the dugout in the middle of an inning to replace him.
