October 11, 200520 yr my fav is Fredi, but I'm OK with Macha, Girardi Fredi or Joe. Best of both worlds with these two. 1. Both are young enough to give the Marlins the continuity they need. 2. Both are going to come from proven winners. 3. Both will come relatively cheap. I dont think the Front Office can go wrong with either one of these guys.
October 11, 200520 yr Between Gonzalez, Girardi and Washington (or any of the others for that matter) I have no particular choice because frankly anything I know about any of them is superficial at best. If I had a gun at my head and had to pick one I guess I'd say Gonzalez but not for any reason relating to his nationality or bilingualism but rather because he's spent so much time in the NL and is intimately familiar with the league's brand of ball. And it doesn't hurt that he knows the Braves so well . Other than that I have no preference and hence didn't vote.
October 11, 200520 yr Author I'm torn. Common sense says the most desireable candidates are Girardi or Gonzalez, but as I've said previously, I'm uncomfortable handing a rookie manager the keys to the asylum that is our club-house, and I'm also not comfortable going with a rookie manager when it seems (at the moment) that we're going for it again in '06 and it may be a make or break year for the franchise as far as South Florida is concerned. With that in mind, Macha, Piniella and Valentine gain a lot of ground, but those guys are out of work for a reason. Personally, I'd like to see Valentine get a shot, but I think we're going to end up offering the job to Girardi, he turns us down to take Tampa's job. Torre'll likely be back simply because of the money owed to him, so Piniella may end up being the guy we hire, but he's just McKeon in a new set of clothes, so that may not be the best for the team; leaving Macha and Valentine, so I'll go with Macha.
October 11, 200520 yr With that in mind, Macha, Piniella and Valentine gain a lot of ground, but those guys are out of work for a reason. Macha is out of work because the Athletics pinched pennies and Piniella is out of work because he asked for a buyout after being tired of Devil Ray ownership not adding payroll to the team in the few years he's been there after they promised they would. Valentine makes sense but your line of "out of work for a reason" holds as much merit with the other two as does your continual Lowell steroid and mole insinuations.

Two teams have already made managerial choices, your saints that are Piniella and Macha weren't hired (or to my knowledge even seriously considered), so they are still currently out of work "for a reason," they weren't deemed the best guy for a job. Nice try though, jackass. :thumbup

October 11, 200520 yr Fredi for reasons stated before. However I'd be pleased with a number of the candidates on the list. My bet is Piniella will sit out a year.
October 11, 200520 yr I dont have an opinion on him yet, but what if Joe Torre is fired? what are your guys thoughts on him?

October 11, 200520 yr Author I dont have an opinion on him yet, but what if Joe Torre is fired? what are your guys thoughts on him? In a heart-beat. Any New York fan will tell you he's a great guy when it comes to maintaining a club-house, and all the good New York fans will say that he's getting an unfair rap for what's going down this year and last year because the Yankees are really just a glorified soft-ball team, just write the lineup and hope for the best. Torre got a good team to over-achieve in '96, he did great managing balanced teams like the '98-'01 Yankees, and then he struggled when the lineup became a collection of 3 hole hitters, Jeter, and a few guys who swing way too hard at hittable pitches. For those that say he got a $200 million toy to underachieve, I say give him some speed and a few more hitters who make contact and you'd actually give him a chance to manage a team instead of just sit on the bench for 9 innings. If Torre's available, he's my guy.
October 11, 200520 yr Author We won't be able to afford Torre. There aren't a ton of big money teams in the market for a manager, plus he'd be getting $13 million if he's fired, or probably around $8 million if he's bought out...I don't know if money's the biggest thing for Torre. To be honest, I think it's more likely to say that he's not going to manage next year before we say he's going to be too expensive.
October 11, 200520 yr 1) Fredi Gonzalez 2) Joe Girardi 3) Ken Macha 4) Anyone Else not named Lou Pinella
October 12, 200520 yr not that anyone puts much stake in what Hank Goldberg says, but he mentioned this morning that a lot of baseball people think very highly of Ron Washington. I suppose Girardi would be fine, but I've heard him in interviews every once in a while & he sort of rubs me the wrong way sometimes. I'm really hoping for Fredi Gonzalez, though I'm not entirely sure why. Just a gut feeling I guess.
