It is a good word. If you're speaking Spanish.

I have a problem with African American. I wrote a whole essay on it. I know one African American and he's whtat you'd call white. He was born in South Africa and now lives in America. African-American.

Would you call Carlos Delgado an African-American by looking at him? Clearly, he's not. And if we're going back that far, because their lineage goes back to Africa, their ancestors have likely been here centuries longer than mine have. I'm a second generation American. Can I demand that I be called Russian-American? I think people would have a problem with that, unless, of course, I was FROM Russia.

I like black and white; I don't see how a color can be offensive.

Also, the black community as a whole has to unify their name. There's the United Negro College Fund and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. I have a feeling if I ever called someone a negro of colored I'd get the sh*t kicked out of me.

Asian-American also has issues.

People from southeast Asia are generally referred to as Asian-Americans (I've heard oriental as well, but for some reason nearly every time I've heard people use it others react as if the term is racist), even though those in the Middle East, India/Pakistan, and Eastern Russia could legitimately call themselves "Asian-American" as well.

I don't have a problem with it really, but like MKotsay I never understand why anyone would want to be referred to by that term. There are no "African-Canadians", or "African English", or "African French" that I'm aware of. And yes I realize we've had our own problems as a nation with race in the past that has led to some of the terms we use now, but just saying in general the term seems kind of silly.

I hate African American. I prefer black, white, whatever.

I think African-American is pretty silly. No offense.

Actually, I changed my mind. I want to be called European-American, please.

Thank you!

And how many generations removed from Europe are you?

You can probably make a better case for Euro-American than some can for African-American.

Like I said, I know one African-American.

Hyphenated names, in an effort to include everyone, end up including no one.

5 generations removed

Ditto. I usually only hear people say African American when they're trying to be PC and it makes me laugh on the inside.

Esp. when white people say it out of 'fear' :lol

I had a long but interesting comment on this subject but when I was about done FireFox popped up an update and apparently I hit the space bar which closed my browser. Thats what I get for using an unstable test version. Maybe I'll repost it later.

I think it's much more complicated than anyone so far as allowed.

Erm... come again?

A couple years ago I was walking out of Wal Mart with my mom, speaking of how we couldn't find any pairs of black shorts. Swear to God, my voice got lower when I said black. It's gotten that crazy.

I don't know - I have always considered myself an American because I was born in this country. Then people are like, "No - I'm asking you about your ancestory" Okay, my mom was born in PA and my dad was born in the same town as me. "No - before your dad" Uh - grandpa was born in the same town, and so was his dad and grandpa. Awe crap - I'm the 14th generation born in this crumby town - time to move!

How about this. What if you are born in Miami, your Dad is born in Miami, your mom is born in Cuba, but both sets of grandparents were born in Miami - what are you then? Cuban-American because your mom was born in Cuba to American parents?

Family Guy did something along these lines last night, not particularly pertaining to how people refer to different races, but how far and how stupid organizations such as the FCC have taken it to make things politicially correct. Like not being able to say something like "take a dump" on TV...even though it is something everyone does and everyone knows about from the time they are old enough to remember.

On the subject, I think the term african-american is ignorant. But, if you say black or negro your a racist, but the term h****y or white is perfectly fine. I got in trouble in Iraq when I used the term "s***", not even using it maliciously, I had a hispanic friend that always called me a h****y, and I called him s***, so on and so forth. Well, one day, he walked in and said "whats up honk", and I replied, as usual, "not much s***". Old boy was having a bad day and went and told the 1st sergeant, native of Cuba...so even though the conversation was initiated by a slur from someone else, and was replied to in a joking manner(and the 1st sergeant knew this), I was the only one who got in trouble, stalling my promotion. It seems that any other race can say anything negative about any other race except white people, this one sided form of PC is what pisses me off.

Political correctness can kiss my hairy white ass.

yeah but like you said youre a 14th generation american, youve been completely assimilated into this culture and really have no connection to the past country. its impossible for me or anyother 1st-2nd-3rd generation american to ignore that part of us. we live with it everyday of our lives growing up and are constantly reminded of it whenever we're with out families. hell i just called home and had a 10 minute conversation with my grandpa in spanish. you cant tell someone like me "its silly to say your this because youre an american" because even though we are American, we're still different. personally i say im american but the family's cuban or i might just say im cuban if asked directly about my heritage.

in the case of black people, i just say black, never really use the term african-american. its not needed, its understood that this person is of african decent and mk7 is being extremely paranoid about using the word black in public.

I just say black. Carribean blacks I call mulatos if they are mixed, that is pretty racist but I don't care.

I've been taught that oriental is reserved for objects like oriental rugs, oriental cuisine, the Orient. ect. Asian is the more appropriate term for ethnic groups.

If you are a citizen here in the U.S. you are American. That is your nationality, i.e. the nation you are a citizen of. Your ethnicity, however, is a whole other category and that can also include people of different color. A white and a mulato from Cuba for example share the same ethnicity. It's a slippery slope.
