D-Rays interested in Lowell? (link)

Featured Replies

St Pete Times story

On his first day at baseball's annual meeting of general managers and executive vice presidents of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman had a lot to talk about.

There were general conversations about trading for players, with Florida third baseman Mike Lowell a potential target. Discussions about trading away players, with Aubrey Huff, Toby Hall and Danys Baez popular topics. Strategies to court free agents, with Bill Mueller a possibility. Arbitration and salary figures to be determined for returning players, with Rocco Baldelli among the more interesting situations.

how much would we have to kick in for that trade to take place? If they need a 1B and 3B so bad, why are they looking to trade Aubrey Huff?

Get Boston involved somehow so they can get Huff, the D-Rays get Lowell, a Red Sox prospect and a Marlins prospect (but all we've got are marginal outfielders and pitchers, something the Rays have plenty of) and the Marlins and Red Sox find someway to equitably divide the Lowell cash...maybe $2 mil from the Marlins and $3 mil from the Red Sox.

I can dream, right?

Since he has two years left on his contract it will cost more than $2 million to jettison Lowell, but you are on the right track. Boston, with the Green Monster might actually be a terrific spot for Lowell (operative word is "might") to resurrect his career.

Here was my plan:

Marlins get: nothing/non-prospect from Rays or Red Sox

Red Sox get: Aubrey Huff

D-Rays get: Lowell, Red Sox prospect, Marlins mid-level prospect, cash from Red Sox and Marlins.

The Red Sox get the kind of guy they've been coveting for 2 years, the Marlins get payroll relief, and the D-Rays get a "name" player at an affordable rate. If the Rays are willing to take more than 50% of Lowell's deal, this could be one to watch.

If we can some how get Aubrey Huff out of it, hot damn...

It's more important to get rid of Lowell's contract - not the man, but the $$$ - than to acquire anyone, including a guy as good as Huff.

At least that's my thinking.

I agree. Miggy will be fine at third base. And we have enough options for LF (Niner, Aguila, Willingham).

I personally would love Baldelli

What about Lowell+olsen+cash for Baldelli or Huff?

They need pitching badly, that is what they are looking for more then anything. We are the amass in tons of pitching right now. Olsen is a prime prospect for trade for his estimated worth.

Personally, with new ownership in place in Tampa, I believe they are going to set out to prove to the fans that it won't be more of the same old same old, so I doubt you'll see them trading away superstars in the making for guys with off-seasons and high price tags, or guys in the autumn of their careers, like you saw with Charles Johnson or so many of their other acquisitions.

Not buying that TSwift. You're going to trade a gold glove 3rd baseman who had ONE bad year and get nothing in return? That AND give up a prospect AND cash? I know you're thinking about saving 5 or 6 million, but Mike Lowell is an asset that we can trade for SOMETHING.

Well it doesnt seem that far fetched to me, the only catch is that it happens to be the devil rays that wants him, so i think its pretty clear we would have to take some of his contract, but think about it, getting aubrey huff in return wouldnt be all to bad. with the club thinking of ways to get rid of Delgado's contract huff would be a solid replacement(also a left handed bat) at first base. Im not one that is for trading Delgado but if it has to be done to keep this team alive then so be it. Ill take aubrey huff

You're right, we could ask for a bucket of batting practice baseballs in return.

Lowell's contract is so bad that teams wouldn't take him with AJ Burnett at the deadline...that says something.

I agree...except about trading Olsen. He is our next ace. But, I'd eat over half of the salary of Lowell to get Baldelli.

:thumbup

I think bullpen help is probably what the Marlins would be after from Tampa Bay. Danys Baez and Trever Miller have been mentioned in the past as being of interest to the Marlins.

I have to side with TSwift here, that of paramount importance is clearing Lowell's contract, and anything received in exchange is frosting on the cake.

The recognition that the Marlins may have to bundle a guy like Olsen and/or pay some of Lowell's contract to get it done, may leave a bad taste in many people's mouths, is understandable, but a reality nonetheless.

I think Mike Lowell has a long and prosperous career ahead of him, somewhere, but not here. We are clearly sellers when it comes to Mikey and as such have to be prepared to take what we can get. Perhaps if Miggy could play the outfield better, or he was still able to slide into the SS slot (which he appears not to be able to do now that he's so much bigger physically than in his youth) or if Mike could play 2B as a replacement for Castillo or something, but none of those scenarios seem plausible.

you dont trade mike lowell and get nothing in return but payroll relief.

to think you should do so is otherwise stupid. the question is what can you get for mikey and with that is the real issue. so what can we get for mikey, its not like he has had multiple bad years or anything, every team essentially dumping a real player becuase of their salary has gotten something useful in return. use your brains. so what can we get for mikey?

With all due respect, Das, Lowell's had 1 1/2 bad seasons (and a bad spring training, too), and those do coincide with the advent of baseball's drug testing. I've said my part on this, and if you were here at all during the summer, you know where I stand. Team's simply will not take a chance on that kind of player due that kind of money if you require them to give something up in return. There are only three ways for the Marlins to get out from Lowell's contract:

1) Pay a hell of a lot of money and get a guy who figures to be a AAAA player at best.

2) Pay less money (maybe half the contract) and get a non-prospect in return

3) Handcuff Mike Lowell to Juan Pierre or Carlos Delgado and tell teams "you want him...well, then you've got to take Lowell too." Given the failure of the Pirates to make that work with Giles/Kendall a few seasons ago, and the Marlins with AJ/Lowell at the deadline, this is almost a non-issue.

Scout's weren't ambiguously referring to Lowell as "Sammy Sosa's twin" for kicks, teams won't come near him when he's owed $18 million. He's not just being dumped because of his salary, because that implies that he has something left in the tank and is just overpaid, Lowell left no reason to assume that he's got anything left to contribute, and thinking that he does because he won a gold-glove award is foolish. Palmeiro won one and he played 29 games at first base that season.

Dump him, and dump him fast if someone's willing to take on over half of the contract.

So, answer your own question...considering Mike is owed $16 million over the next two years, what do YOU think can be gotten in a trade of Mike Lowell?

you dont trade mike lowell and get nothing in return but payroll relief.

A freaking prospect, or something! You guys are so willing to give up Lowell, cash AND one of OUR prospects for payroll relief? You really think the D Backs wouldn't give us ANYTHING?

More importantly, do you really think Beinfest would have a job after making such a trade??

I can name of a number of things. As Lefty pointed out, you are one of the ones being irrational and brainless about it. I'll throw out my ideas when discussing anything with Tampa when you give a rational trade proposal.

I don't usually find you to be one of the one's here to throw around insults but I guess I was wrong. Irrational and brainless? Trust me, I''ve spent alot of time and energy coming to the conclusions I have. They aren't pleasant, they aren't pretty but they are reality-based.

All I did was ask a question, obviously you don't have an answer.

you are the one that basically wants to give away a player for nothing.

the rockies essentially gave away mike hampton and they got something back in return.

the rangers gave away arod and got something back in return.

and the list goes on. and yet you suggest us to give up lowell AND a prospect and get nothing more than salary savings in return.

laughable.
