Bowyer

Featured Replies

Bowyer, 24, impressed the Marlins this year in the Arizona Fall League -- he played on the same club as the Marlins prospects, the Grand Canyon Rafters. He collected 23 saves and compiled a 2.78 ERA at Minnesota's Triple-A affiliate in Rochester, N.Y., last summer during a season in which one scout called him the "best reliever in the International League."

He could become the Marlins' closer in the very near future.

had a 2.78 ERA and a 96/40 K/BB ratio in 74 1/3 for Triple-A Rochester last season. He also struck out 12 in 9 2/3 innings for the Twins. He got lit up in the Arizona Fall League at the end of the year, but that's because he was concentrating on his slider and not using his 95-98 mph fastball to blow hitters away. Bowyer isn't polished enough to move into the closer's role right away, but he'll probably have a spot in the Florida pen coming out of spring training. He'll be a sleeper for 2006 and keeper leaguers would be smart to pick him up.

Sounds pretty good

I'm kinda big on the Twins minors leaguers because I follow their AAA team closely and their AA team plays Binghamton(where I live) regularly.

I still think we may still see Jones back as closer.

He has the right demeanor to mentor a kid like this and is just the guy to teach him the "tricks" of the trade.

Any acquisition like this, instead of some failed closer type, pushes the idea of Jones returning further along.

He's a good player, but we don't need more pitchers.

He's not just another pitcher, he's a closer. Never confuse the two.

Man, I thought maybe this firesale would chase all the idiots on the board away.

Guess I was wrong. :(

:thumbup I was so hoping you'd be correct on this.

As for an earlier post of yours FF, the Marlins acquired the players they did because the alternative was to pay part of Castillo's salary and probably get a higher level prospect or a guy like Romero. In order to get a guy (using the Twins) like Rincon they would have had to step up their contribution even more.

All in all, so far I'm pleased (I'm not pleased anyone was traded but the reality players were going to be traded) with the talent we've received across the board. Will they all work out? Nope. But if you wind up with three or four major leaguers two years from now it will have all been worth it.

im not saying he messed us up. im just saying he wont be that good next year.

because he was so terrible last year?

yeah terrible, was perhaps the best closer in the national leagues. Blowing what 4-5 saves all year?

Give me a break

Jones is the bomb!

Agreed. when we are all celebrating downtown with all the bandwagoners some time around 2008 to 2011, it is worth it again and again. Let's rebuild and win championships every 5 years until we get an owner that can afford to build a stadium with his/her own money.

My only concern with this trade is where out second baseman comes from

I like the 1-2 punch of this kid and Resop. I think there is Alot of potential there. Specially along with Messenger setting it up for them in the 7th.

You're partially right. You don't see DOGFISH or the GODFATHER ever since I took a break away from this site. It will never be perfect because as long as you have kids 16 & under thinking that they know more about baseball than people thta have been involved with it longer than they have been living, you will have some absurdity.

But you are mostly right.

Or people who can't even spell David Samson's name.
