December 4, 200520 yr Mets Are Said to Be in Talks for Marlins Catcher The Mets have extended offers to the top two free-agent catchers, but it is becoming increasingly likely that they will fill their catching void by trading for Paul Lo Duca. They are involved in "very serious" discussions with the Florida Marlins about acquiring Lo Duca, according to a baseball official who was granted anonymity because he did not want to jeopardize the negotiations. The official said he did not know whom the Marlins would receive, but at this point they may not be picky. In cutting payroll, they are searching for young, cheap talent, along the lines of the two midlevel prospects they acquired from Minnesota on Friday in exchange for second baseman Luis Castillo. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/04/sports/b...all/04mets.html
December 4, 200520 yr Great job there Beinfest, could have gotten more for Delgado and LoDuca as a package than in seperate one for ones if they end up on the same freaking team.
December 4, 200520 yr O' please anyone except the Mets. We have all their worthy prospects. I'll take Heilman. I think they also have a young 2nd baseman we may be interested in.
December 4, 200520 yr Any trade of LoDuca or Juan Pierre that didn't include getting getting back Dioner Navarro, Yadier Molina or at the least Yorvit Torrealba would be profoundly disappointing.
December 4, 200520 yr Any trade of LoDuca or Juan Pierre that didn't include getting getting back Dioner Navarro, Yadier Molina or at the least Yorvit Torrealba would be profoundly disappointing. I completely agree there...unless Beinfest actually thinks Willingham is going to be the catcher.

December 4, 200520 yr Any trade of LoDuca or Juan Pierre that didn't include getting getting back Dioner Navarro, Yadier Molina or at the least Yorvit Torrealba would be profoundly disappointing. Dioner Navarro is so ready to take charge of a major league team it's scary. It should be illegal to be a 21 year old kid and have so much skill at the toughest position in the game, but he's been preparing for 2006 since he was 16. I defy anyone to find a credibily-sourced article that calls him to task for the way he handles pitchers.
December 4, 200520 yr From Rotoworld: Paul Lo Duca - C - Marlins The Mets are involved in "very serious" discussions with the Marlins about acquiring Paul Lo Duca, a source told the New York Times. This after the Diamondbacks and Marlins were said to be close to a deal yesterday. We're guessing the Marlins would want a pitcher from the group of Aaron Heilman, Jae Seo and Brian Bannister along with either Anderson Hernandez or Jeff Keppinger in exchange for Lo Duca. Heilman is probably unavailable, but Seo could be in play. Dec. 3 - 11:15 pm et Source: New York Times If we got two of any of those players mentioned, I'd be happy. Well, not happy because I think we need Lo Duca, but if we got any of those two prospects at least it's better than what Arizona offered... especially Anderson Hernandez.
December 4, 200520 yr I doubt the Mets offer Lasting Milegdes again. Dooky is not worth the top prospect in their system. If them Marlins played it smart though I think they could have gotten Miledge, Jacobs, and Petit for Delgodo and LoDoca before we trade Carlos.
December 4, 200520 yr "but if we got any of those two prospects at least it's better than what Arizona offered..." Who did Arizona offer?
December 4, 200520 yr What's the story on Anderson Hernandez Ask and you shall receive: 8. ANDERSON HERNANDEZ ss/2b Age: 23 B-T: B-R Ht: 5-9 Wt.: 170 Signed: Dominican Republic, 2001 Signed by: Ramon Pena (Tigers) Background: No player in the organization bolstered his prospect status in 2005 more than Hernandez. After coming over from the Tigers in a trade for Vance Wilson, he shed his good-field/no-hit reputation and emerged as a potential everyday player. Strengths: A switch-hitter, Hernandez is adept from both sides of the plate. He has learned to focus on using the whole field and to make use of his plus speed. Defensively, he has very soft hands, above-average range and an average, accurate arm. He has excellent body control and lateral mobility. Weaknesses: For a player with very little power, Hernandez doesn?t control the strike zone, and he needs to do a better job of making contact. For all his defensive gifts, he gets himself into trouble when he tries to be flashy. The Future: Hernandez isn?t going to move Jose Reyes off of shortstop, but the disappointing Kaz Matsui is vulnerable at second base. Most likely, Hernandez will wind up becoming a dependable utilityman. 2005 Club (Class) AVG OBP SLG AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS Binghamton (AA) .326 .360 .462 273 46 89 14 1 7 24 14 58 11 9 Norfolk (AAA) .303 .354 .379 261 34 79 6 4 2 30 22 46 24 9 New York (NL) .056 .105 .056 18 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 4 0 1
December 4, 200520 yr Arizona offered Snyder and one of Bruney, Aquino or someone else. Mets Top 10 Prospects from BA for this year: 1. Lastings Milledge, of 2. Yusmeiro Petit, rhp 3. Alay Soler, rhp Hernandez is said to be a great 2B of the future. Could replace Castillo.
December 4, 200520 yr Great job there Beinfest, could have gotten more for Delgado and LoDuca as a package than in seperate one for ones if they end up on the same freaking team. I hope you're being sarcastic.....He was probably (still is) gathering offers for Lo Duca, and the Delgado deal was way ahead of any Lo Duca deal in terms of development.

Nope, being dead-set serious. LoDuca and Delgado could have brought back Milledge and Jacobs. Deal them seperately, but don't deal them seperately, in the same offseason, to the same team. I mean, it's not like (well, I hope not at least) that Beinfest woke up yesterday and said "hmmm, maybe I should just trade LoDuca for kicks."
December 4, 200520 yr Hopefully Minaya goes crazy trying to outbid Arizona or anyone else and overpays for P-Lo as he did Delgado.
December 4, 200520 yr Author Rumor is up here in NY that the Mets are just floating this rumor out there to get Molina or Hernandez to take the offer the Mets made to them. Mets want one of those guys and are willing to settle for either one, but they've been reluctant to sign so far. Omar floated out the Benson for Julio deal to the NY Post two days ago and then all of a sudden he had phone calls from other teams telling him they'd offer more if he'd just wait a little longer. I still think LoDuca ends up in Arizona.
December 4, 200520 yr How do you know they didn't talk about packaging them together? A few weeks ago, the Mets were confident they'd get either Molina or Hernandez, but now in that article it looks like it won't happen. The Mets wanted Delgado a few weeks ago, they didn't want to wait on that trade. The FO may be copping a lot of crap and perhaps for good reason, but like you said, he didn't just wake up today thinking he had to trade Lo Duca. There are other factors.
