December 4, 200520 yr Shock signing of the offseason. I'm hoping Beinfest uses this to get a boatload out of the Cubs.

December 4, 200520 yr Author Shock signing of the offseason. I'm hoping Beinfest uses this to get a boatload out of the Cubs. :thumbup Dodgers may be more willing to trade that SS prospect now maybe??? He's supposed to be moving to 1B, 3B or a corner OF position. He's like 6'6, 230
December 4, 200520 yr Wow...that's a bit off a shocker. This can only help the Marlins. Who will play short for the Braves???
December 4, 200520 yr Who will play short for the Braves??? Umm...who cares? We've only got like 4 holes to plug here when all is said and done. In all seriousness, probably Betemit or maybe our Alex Gonzalez.
December 4, 200520 yr wow what a deal. dodgers get a good SS and the braves now grow just a bit weaker. but who cares the braves can win with single-A guys.
December 4, 200520 yr Geez that's a bucketload of money for a good player, but not a great SS like Tejada or Jeter. Dodgers need a power hitter more than anything else.
December 4, 200520 yr This is amazing for the Marlins because now the Cubs are despereate for a leadoff hitter and will possibly overpay for Juan Pierre...
December 4, 200520 yr The Dodgers are a surprise, they have good organizational guys like Joel Guzman, Andy LaRoche, etc. that can all play SS.
December 4, 200520 yr I never thought of it like that, good call. Man I hope we get Murton, Hill or Pie... I doubt we will though. I don't know why we haven't asked for David Aardsma and Jerome Williams, they're both major league ready arms who have tons of potential and fill our biggest needs in the bullpen and in the rotation. Then we could always trade pitching for Gathright.
December 4, 200520 yr Who is going to play short for the Braves now? I think Wilson Betemit will be given the opportunity... I heard that they might sign AGon too...
December 4, 200520 yr Also heard that they've been laying the groundwork with the D-Rays for a possible trade with Julio Lugo.
December 4, 200520 yr 13.3 million for Furcal? second highest paid SS in league after Jeter? jeez.. no offense to Furcal, he's a great player, but he's a complementary player (leadoff hitter/table setter) not someone you build around. this is vlad or pujols money. it's ace money. it's not furcal money. what were the dodgers thinking?
December 4, 200520 yr Everything is telling me that Juan Pierre is their Plan B. Now that JP is the leadoff man they most desire, Felix Pie or Matt Murton may be heading to Florida. FORGET JEROME WILLIAMS AND RICH HILL....WE DONT NEED ANY MORE PITCHING!!!
December 4, 200520 yr Author The Cubs won't give up Pie for one year of JP.. if anything, JP is a stop gap until Pie is ready. They have enough OF issues as is.. They won't trade Murton, who is about their only major league ready OF on their team. I was hoping the Cubs would get Furcal and then maybe we could land Cedeno from the Cubs for JP and play 2B for us.. but now it looks like Cedeno will be their SS.
December 4, 200520 yr I know what you're saying about no more pitching, but the realism is, as long as you have a surplus of pitching, you can always trade for positional players. The Twins organization is a testiment to that, look what they did for Castillo, and they even said "We have a lot of pitching, we can give it up easily". If we send some to another team for a 2B, CF or C then it would make sense... as most teams do need pitching, especially teams like the D-Rays or Angels who seem heavy on hitting prospects.

I understand that there is no such thing as too much pitching, but the Fish do need to focus on some other positions. Is it too much of a crime to receive an outfield or catching prospect for one of these plasyers we trade??
December 4, 200520 yr If we can get Murton, I'm not so sure we still won't contend.. Dontrelle is already a ace. Miguel is a young mvp in waiting. Mike Jacobs appears MLB ready. Jeremy Hermida appears MLB ready. Matt Murton appears MLB ready. If our pitching as a whole can hold up, we might surprise.
December 4, 200520 yr Author Again, Murton is the only OF that the Cubs have right now. They won't move him... and I really doubt they'd be stupid enough to give up Pie for 1 year of Pierre.
