Posted January 31, 200619 yr Gonzalez Signs With Boston 31st January, 2006 - 3:23 am ESPN - The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a $3 million, one-year deal with shortstop Alex Gonzalez, according to a report in the Boston Herald. The newspaper cited multiple sources but did not identify them in a story posted Monday night on its Web site. Gonzalez, who reportedly will take a required physical exam Tuesday or Wednesday, batted .264 with five home runs and 45 RBI last season for the Florida Marlins. In Boston, he would replace Edgar Renteria, who was traded to the Atlanta Braves in December. http://www.realgmbaseball.com/src_wiretap_archives/1810/20060131/gonzalez_signs_with_boston/
January 31, 200619 yr Not a big deal... Its nothing we didnt expect... Should be posted in the MLB section... Welcome to the boards!
January 31, 200619 yr Good for Alex. He should really help a team that isn't depending on him offensively.
January 31, 200619 yr Phenom with the glove and without a doubt the worst plate discipline we will ever see in our lives. I wish Alex all the best.
January 31, 200619 yr Old news and wrong forum God bless dude.. cut the guy some slack. There goes the board police again. God forbid someone post "old news" in the "wrong forum". It was his first post.. Next time send him the friggin manual, so he knows what's acceptable to post when and where...
January 31, 200619 yr Wow. Am I the only one who sees this as a steal for the Red Sox? A 1 year, $3 million dollar deal. People were expecting him to get a Furcal-like contract.

I didn't see him getting a Furcal like deal, but I do see this as a steal. A-Gon is way underrated, in my opinion. I think he'll hit very well at Fenway, and he should win the Gold Glove this year. He is a superior fielder than Jeter... I'm pumped to watch the Sox play this year. I've always liked them, but you put Mike Lowell, Josh Beckett, Alex Gonzalez, and J.T Snow in a Red Sox uni and I'm an even bigger fan.
January 31, 200619 yr I agree lefty which brings me back to a huge what if of the offseason. What if the Marlins decided to rebuild but not in such an extreme manner? If they focused on bringing the payroll down but keeping a MAJOR LEAGUE quality team on the diamond. So assume they made every deal this offseason except the Boston deal and resigned Alex G. to a two year $8 million deal. Our payroll would be right around $30 million we would have tons of young pitching behind Willis and Beckett and our lineup would be more experienced (maybe even decent if Lowell comes around) Gathright?/reed hermedia cabrera jacobs lowell willingham gonzo reese willis beckett vargas olsen mitre Not in the world series but not hurt for the future.
January 31, 200619 yr One has to wonder if the Marlins knew he would ultimately sign for LESS than he made in 2005 would they have considered re-signing him? It's really a rhetorical question for the obvious reasons.
January 31, 200619 yr He'll always have the walk off home run against the Cubs. I can remember where I was and thinking that he had absolutely no chance do anything with that at bat. And I was never happier to be wrong in my life.

January 31, 200619 yr Old news and wrong forum How is this old news? Wow. Am I the only one who sees this as a steal for the Red Sox? A 1 year, $3 million dollar deal. People were expecting him to get a Furcal-like contract. I agree, this is a steal for the Sox. Only 3 million and no long term commitment to one of the best defensive short stops with some pop. He would have probably signed here for 2 or 2.5 giving Hanley another year to develop, oh well.
January 31, 200619 yr The rumored 3 year deal that was reported a week ago would have made me sick to my stomach. This is a smart deal. Fills up a whole defensively really well and he may be able to give something comprable to what Edgar did last season at the bottom of the lineup. This paves the way for Alex Cora or Tony Graffanino to be on their way out.

Thats the one thing I will always remember him for. He joined a nice list in doing that: World Series walk-off home runs Player Team Game # Year Scott Podsednik White Sox Game 2 2005 Alex Gonzalez Marlins Game 4 2003 Derek Jeter Yankees Game 4 2001 Chad Curtis Yankees Game 3 1999 Joe Carter Blue Jays Game 6 1993 Kirby Puckett Twins Game 6 1991 Mark McGwire Athletics Game 3 1988 Kirk Gibson Dodgers Game 1 1988 Carlton Fisk Red Sox Game 6 1975 Mickey Mantle Yankees Game 3 1964 Bill Mazeroski Pirates Game 7 1960 Eddie Mathews Braves Game 4 1957 Dusty Rhodes Giants Game 1 1954 Tommy Henrich Yankees Game 1 1949
January 31, 200619 yr For 1/3 couldn't we have signed him instead of Mohler and Borowski? Yes, but pitching is the weakest aspect of this team right now. The offense will be better in 2006 than it was in 2005. We aren't competing this year. Why does it matter if the pitching sucks? I'm deathly afraid that we're gonna give HanRam the starting job and ruin his career. Gonzalez should have been here for another year to ease the transition.

Better to sign Gonzalez to a (relatively) cheap contract like the Sox did and give Hanley more time to develop. One wonders if the Marlins even did consider signing Gonzalez, though, if he would have resigned with the Marlins.

Well if the Marlins aren't competing, then why give Gonzalez that cash? I agree though, they aren't competing. For 3 million, to not ruin Hanley's career. He may have skills but didn't do that well in AA last year. Also, it would be a returning face the fans would like, and also could be used as trade bait at the deadline if Hanley were ready.
January 31, 200619 yr They won't ruin Hanley's career. Even if he starts the season as our starting SS, he'll be sent back down if he struggles. A lot of great players struggled at first and spent time between the big club and AAA. If he does struggle, my guess is Pokey plays SS with Uggla taking 2b... or who knows, maybe Andino gets the call.... Point is, they won't rush Hanley if they don't think he's ready.
January 31, 200619 yr That gives the Sox 6 former Marlins. He'll be joing former teammates Lowell, Beckett, Clement, Tavarez and Seanez. Hell it would have been 7 if they had kept Mota. Henry sure likes those former Marlins.
January 31, 200619 yr I'm going to really miss that Alex/Luis combo. Good luck to Seabass! One of the best nicknames in Fish history!
