The photo was taken at a promotional event in Puerto Rico. In the linked story from a local newspaper, Lasorda criticizes the players who elected not to represent their countries in the WBC, saying he "has no respect for them".

At first glance it looked like the NBA Championship Trophy with some extra parts glued on it.

I like the WBC trophy a lot. However, I prefer the World Cup trophy. The thing is solid gold. Not even gold plated. Solid gold.

Wouldn't the winner of a global tournament be more qualified to be called "World Champion" as opposed to the winner of a series whose participants are the best teams from two leagues that play exclusively in the United States (with one exception in Canada)?
