Something about this team....

Featured Replies

Guys I just wanted to know everyone's honest hopes/expectations of this team?

I am curious because I sense a little something about this team that I sensed in the 2003 version of the Marlins. That they are much better than people are giving them credit for. Now, I am a realist and I know with a 17 mill payroll we will probably not even sniff the playoffs. But I see enough upside with these guys that makes me beleive we can be competetive. Then of course there is the unreasonable hope that we will make the playoffs but that is just my extreme homerism taking over there. Anyhow, just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this team. Cause I certainly don't see them even coming close to what the 98 team did, regardless of what popular opinion is.

i like this team a lot. girardi is doing a hell of a job of making these guys play as well as possible. this team wins 70-75 games, imo.

i thought the payroll was around $21 million, but yeah its good to at least hope that they could make the playoffs, u just never know. this is after all the game of baseball and things do happen. they do have alot of talent and MUCH MUCH better then the 98 squad which was just horrific in some cases. once they get the hang of things they will win alot more then the 98 squad did. the 2003 team had alot more experience with them but thats not to say this 2006 team cant be like them.

i think they win 70 + games and do finish around 4th place maybe even 3rd, but i would hope that crush that prediction and do even better

Some are optimistic because while the team is really young, and has a really low payroll, there is undoubtedly a plethora of talent. If these talented, yet young and inexperienced, prospects can perform to their potential in their first year, then there is reason to believe this team will win some games. This isn't a low payroll team with a bunch of no talent assclowns (ala the KC Royals, etc.).

team can also suck the big one and lose 100+ games while being a complete joke and having a new player in each position day in and out

... hey just being realistic :confused

pessimistic

I think there is plenty of reason to give this team hope this season. So far what I've seen during ST is that the attitudeis completely different than it was last year and I think that is in large part to Girardi running this team now. I think in '98, a bunch of guys were just thrown in with the yet to be tradees and it really hurt this team throughout the season. This team doesn't seem to have that problem and these are all guys hungry to show poeple what they can do.

I think this team is going to make some serious noise this year.

While I don't see flashed of 2003 with this group (that's a once in a lifetime thing, so we'd probably be better off if we stopped using that as a measuring stick), Juanky has said that it reminds him a lot of the 2004 Cleveland Indians and I can't help but agree.

Boatloads of raw talent at just about every position, by 2007 we'll have a winning record and 2008 we'll be lapping the Braves.

not to mention by then our payroll will hopefully go up because of a stadium deal, and any holes that need to be filled will be by free agents :mischief

This team is a better version of the 2004 Cleveland Indians, we have products in Willis and Cabrera that that team did not, so imagine that, we might be rebuilding but we still have a cleanup hitter who thrives under pressure, and is young, and a young pitcher that hasn't had a losing record since he was promoted from double-A to the big leagues, and is coming off a 20 win season.

side note: We will be serious contenders by the year 2008. Count on it!

That team did have CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee if I am not mistaken. In addition to a pretty talented hitter in Victor Martinez.

Travis Hafner also raked that year. They had vetrans too, Vizquel and Lawton.

Yeah, they had Sabathia, Westbrook and Lee and Hafner and Martinez...plus Vizquel and Belliard up the middle. They also won 80 games that year, so the comparison probably isn't perfect, but to say that we'll be a better version is moronic. Then again, this guy does agree with Spike quite a bit...

I still think that they need at least a season of grooming in the majors. The guys from the 04 Indians had been around for a little while at the time when they broke out. So I think that next year seems like a plausible scenario for a break out year for the team and a serious challenge for the division or WC. However, this can only happen IF the prospects develop and they turn their talents into on-the-field production.

This team will be absolutly terrible in the 1st half and expect them to make an 04 DRays type 2nd half getting better as the season goes on with the rotation being top tier by September and the lineup being average by next year.
