Posted March 29, 200618 yr Tuesday, March 28, 2006 AP: Church among four cut by Nationals Ryan Church? I knew they wanted to find room for Brandon Watson, but a surprise nonetheless? Outfielder Ryan Church was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday by the Washington Nationals, meaning rookie Brandon Watson and Marlon Byrd will share time in center field. ?Shocked. Only word I can say. That?s it: shocked,? said Church, who was chosen the NL rookie of the month in May last season but later lost time to injuries. He wound up hitting .287 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in 102 games for Washington. .... General manager Jim Bowden said Tuesday?s decision came down to Watson having a better spring than Church? The Nationals also optioned right-hander Jason Bergmann and infielder Brendan Harris to New Orleans and reassigned left-hander Bill Bray to minor league camp. A mod can move it if they want. Church sounds pissed, and with good reason. Maybe this gives us a little more leverage with the D-Rays in a potential Gathright deal. I wouldn't mind getting either one of these cats.
March 29, 200618 yr For our team's needs, I'd rather have Gathright, but I wouldn't be disappointed with Church. However, I'd hate to see us give Washington something of value and have it come back to haunt us later.
March 29, 200618 yr We really need to pounce on this, Church would help out this lineup tremendously. Bowden is a damn fool
March 29, 200618 yr We should join in on the Rip Jim Bowden Off Party. Nolasco for Church! i agree. nolasco and some mid level pitching prospect for church.

March 29, 200618 yr if we got him, you know he would KILL the nationals every time we play them...that's the way these things always go. I say pull the trigger, but not for Nolasco. How about Tank and another prospect? I doubt that would do it, but it's worth a shot. It seems our FO is high on Nolasco, and I'd hate to give up on a young pitcher who is a good balance of power and control.

It'd definitely have to be someone in our 2nd tier of SP prospects and maybe someone in the 1st tier. Why's everyone so worried about losing Nolasco? He's just more ready at this juncture than higher ceiling guys like Petit, Sanchez, and Volstad. We can afford to trade one of our many good pitching spects for a position of great need. Nolasco and a toolsy outfielder and Bowden skeet skeet skeets over this. Nolasco and Miller/Burns? :hat
March 29, 200618 yr Rotoworld had a report a few days ago that Bowden was interested in Eric Reed (and Nook Logan from the Tigers). If he'd accept Reed and one of the pitching prospects for Church that would be fantastic.

March 29, 200618 yr I'll take Church for LF and give Abercrombie a shot in CF with Aguila as the 4th OF.
March 29, 200618 yr Author Reed and Jesus Delgado for Church It's worth a try! no it aint. :mischief2
March 29, 200618 yr You guys aren't satisfied with Abercrombie in CF?? I'd prefer Reggie in LF, we don't know yet if he can handle CF at Dolphins stadium, let alone be an effective MLer
March 29, 200618 yr Reed and Jesus Delgado for Church It's worth a try! no it aint. :mischief2Start low :mischief Plus, we're not dealing with a higher intellect here.

No arguments here. :hat Robinson has been touting Watson all spring though...I wonder how much influence he had on the decision. Either way it's nearly indefensible.

March 29, 200618 yr You guys aren't satisfied with Abercrombie in CF?? NO And my answer includes the Isotopes CF situation. Church is fine if the price is cheap. I wouldn't give the Nationals anything crazy. Something like Pinto and Reed. It seems he likes the later, and Pinto has issues he might never overcome, but offers enough upside where he is an asset to them if he breaks into the bigs. Plus Bowden is stupid, and we can get away not giving Nolasco.
