TV RATINGS

Channel 4's coverage of the Florida-UCLA national championship game easily outrated the Marlins' opener Monday, but ranked in the bottom third among the nation's largest markets.

Locally, the basketball game generated a 10.1 rating, which ranked 39th among Nielsen's 56 metered markets. South Florida often ranks last for NCAA Tournament games. Last year's North Carolina-Illinois game had an 8.2 on Channel 4.

By comparison, FSN had a 4.3 rating for the Marlins-Astros opener -- which was even with its Marlins average for all of last season.

Nationally, the Florida-UCLA game had an 11.2 rating -- down 25 percent from the 15.0 for last year's title game.

Well done, South Florida! Now if only we can coax some off these "fans" out to the ol' ballpark...

Not to be the debbie downer, but isn't it a loss if the season opener ranks in line with last seasons average? That kind of game is meant to represent the high end of the spectrum...

tv is never the problem here. They pull in a great tv contracts and market. The problem is the ballpark, they need to get one period

This is kinda off topic but I have been seeing alot more people wearing Marlins shirts and hats. When I was going to work I saw 3 people wearing Marlins gear and this was within 5 minutes of eachother. I even saw 2 cars with a Marlin plate on the way to class. :thumbup .

My understanding is that the Marlins ratings last season were very strong.

It isn't that people are disinterested in the Fish, it's that they refuse to go hell on earth, better known as Dolphins Stadium.

I agree. It's like going to a dump :( . When our new stadium gets built (I believe it will) the attendance will change for the better. We all know the game will be played and in a comfortable climate. :)

1) It ran directly against the Gators, who got Dolphins-like ratings on CBS4 which is Miami's strongest OTA signal in terms of reach.

2) It was on cable only, while many of last year's games were on PAX which is over-the-air.

3) It was the season opener, but it was away.

4) I believe it still beat out primetime on NBC, ABC, and FOX

Both the Metrodome and the Trop (which has just undergone $10 mil in improvements) have roofs, rain and sun are not the issues they are here in Oakland, DC or Chicago. The comparisons aren't legitimate.

Tropicana Field was not bad at all, but I am dying to get up there (probably Opening Night on Monday) to catch a game.

I also plan to do the Marlins Opening Day on Tuesday.

I agree. I've been to a ton of stadiums, and at least there isn't an "obstructed" view in Dolphin Stadium. In fact, the only time I ever had trouble seeing a part of the field was when I sat in upperdeck, dead center field for game 7 in 1997....you couldn't see Jeff Conine if a ball was hit to the teal monster.

For instance, if anyone has ever sat in Minute Maid park in the OF, there is not ONE seat that has a clear view of the entire field. In fact, if you are in the upper deck corners, you can't even see a quarter of the entire OF. I don't care how nice the stadium seems, I'm ALL about the view.

And there is NO atmosphere in Tropicana field...partly because it is indoors. But, then again, the time I went there it was the WORST collection of major league talent...orioles vs. DRays...when the only player of any noteworthiness was Randy Winn...and he was being "rested" that day.

Probably got it on sale at a flee market and figured it'll be a collectable someday.

I used to watch almost ever game on TV and go to at least one game a week. It's just hard coming home from downtown and getting up to the stadium in time for the first pitch. And I was taking the MetroRail! Fighting traffic to get to such a remote location is tough.

I'm heading to the new Busch stadium in a couple of weeks and i'll let you know about that. The old Busch stadium wasn't too bad. I sat in the bleachers a lot which made a lot of the outfield obstructed but that is to be expected.

Dolphins Stadium IS NOT better than ol' Comisky. Even from the Van Ryan that thing looks 100x better than dolphin stadium. Have you even been there after they remodeled the whole thing?

No, you clearly haven't been to the renovated cell

Don't know I would have to go there.

No, I loved the Trop.

i agree with all of those (though i havent been to Oakland/Minnesota, which appear to be worse than ours). i absolutely hate the Cell and the Trop

the problem is that those 5 are either near mass transit or has a good location. D.S. has neither

PPS is in the middle of nowhere. Just terrible. I know we are forced to play there for now but I really hate the location and dread having to drive over 45 minutes to watch my baseball team play.

My car has a Marlin plate.

Same here.

Same here. Just got mine a couple of months ago.

BTW, yesterday I went to the bank and the car in front of me had a Marlins plate. :thumbup

Dolphin Stadium has a turnpike exit...not as bad as it could be. Look, D.S. is not the best venue for baseball, but it has a great atmosphere when it's packed, and every seat has a clear view of the whole field. Anybody who doesn't go because they don't like the stadium is not worthy of having a brand new stadium built for them with public money anyway. Has anyone been to shea?? What a toilet?? How about Coors Field?? Yea it's gorgeous and all, but if you are sitting in deep CF, you really are a MILE away from the field. I judge a stadium by its WORST seats...and D.S. doesn't have many (although the lower deck corners are a bit tough on the neck).

The only issue is the rain...and I've got to tell you, I actually have a quasi-conspiracy theory for this. Why does major league baseball NEVER give us a favorable schedule of away games during hurricane/rain season?? I mean, after last year, it was all over the news, everyone was complaining about this (especially with the re-scheduling from the hurricanes), and we still got shafted in this year's schedule. I think an argument can be made that MLB is purposely trying to make things difficult here, so that SOMEONE builds a new stadium for the marlins.

It's not hard to figure out here who has kids and who doesn't.

I know when I wasn't a parent sitting though a rain delay or getting burnt to a crisp in the bleachers in Fenway years ago was sort of rite of passage, and an excuse to drink more beer than any human should ( :D ).

But when you're bringing kids to games, and the Marlins being contracturally frozen out of a large segment of potential corporate ticket sales, need to have an environment that is family friendly. Dolphin Stadium simply isn't.
