I think he was hoping to get out off it with only a few runs because he was due up 1st the bottom of the inning... Didnt work out tonight... Some times it does some time it doesnt....

well he just wanted to see mitre pitch out of it, dont really blame giradi too much for it, walking eckstein and allowing the next hit to rodriguez is what started it all, then bases cleared and still couldnt get out of it.

Thats what happens when your middle relief is below average at best.

 

Other than Nolasco/Vargas its nothing but down hill from there.

The bullpen sucks, so you may as well find out if your guy can get out it himself.

also, like was said in the game thread, the Cardinals weren't seeing many pitches that inning so even if Wellemeyer was called on right away, it would have taken that long for him to get warm anyway

Still no outs.

 

It is the 5th inning (not the first or second), so that sequence should at least get you to think about warming somebody up just in case (is there anything to lose by warming somebody up?) . Hey, I'm not saying Mitre should have been taken out at this point (this is the point where you see if he can get out of it with just those 3 runs), but you gotta at least warm someone up.

 

Then Edomonds singles. That's 4 straight baserunners to start the innning. Red flag, anyone?

 

Rolen follows with another single. Five straight, including a home run. Still no outs.

 

He should have never thrown another pitch after this point (and yes, I'm aware he got the next guy for his first out, but you didn't know that at this point).

 

So what does Girardi do? He waits for Mitre to give up 3 more base hits. If you're keeping count, that's 7 hits, 1 walk... and a grand total of 1 out. It should have never come to that.

 

 

 

By the way, I'm not a full blown Girardi basher (I love the way he talks and manages the clubhouse) but I'm at serious disagreement with his game-management strategies.

Not that I disagree with what you're saying overall, but you can't warm pitchers up and sit them down at will. You lose them after warming them up and sitting them unless you're nuts.

Juanky, I beg to disagree. I respect the posts you have made. A lot. But I have to say that I have seen upon many occassions that a lot of relievers warm up more than once in any given game. However, I agree, this is not the wise course of action to take during a 162 game season. Still, that does not mean that, when a situation like yesterday's arises (as is hopefully explained in my last post), you shouldn't warm somebody, anybody, up.

 

That's my whole point.

I agree, to a point. It'd be wise to get someone maybe playing catch or soft tossing. To see no movement in the pen is discouraging as a fan. But full out warming up, not at that point. You have to have faith in your starter especially with so many games left over the course of the season.

Should of had a pitcher warming up during the delay.
