July 3, 200620 yr 84 Million in it's 5 day release. http://joblo.com/index.php?id=11923 Yeah. Warner Brothers is in very bad shape. Poseidon did very poorly and Superman has not done well considering how much it cost to make it. I believe I posted this last night. I wouldn't classify them as in bad shape over two movies (Superman still isn't a bomb). You can't honestly think Superman won't turn a profit in the end. Oh, well. *goes back to not caring about box office numbers because they don't really matter anyways*

Batman Begins made 48 million in it's opening weekend and then grossed over 200 million. I don't think this movie is in danger on not turning a profit at all and I wouldn't be suprised if it had a second wind and took a bite out of POTC2:DMC's opening weekend as well. Should be in the 115-120 million range after 2 weeks not bad at all.

Should be in the 115-120 million range after 2 weeks not bad at all. Batman Begins had some of the best legs of any movie ever, which reflected its great quality. I highly doubt Superman Returns has similar legs. I really don't think the BB comparison is applicable here. SR is much more frontloaded, while BB had amazing legs and a terrible opening weekend. POTC:DMC may cut it off at the knees next week, as well. Don't worry about WB, though. They'll be fine. They are probably going to make about 180-200 million on the domestic BO, and quite a bit more overseas (of which they only get a moderate percentage of). Then, with TV deals, merchandising, and licensing they will undoubtedly get into the black. I would be shocked if this endangers any future sequels. Much like Batman Begins, Superman Returns was a setup movie. It was built specifically to recreate a franchise. Look for Batman Begins to make over 300 million in 2008 and Superman Returns to make over 300 million in 2009. WB did lose a killing on Poseidon, though.
July 4, 200620 yr I'm absolutely flabbergasted that some of you are criticizing this movie so harshly. Maybe I'm spoiled by seeing it on the IMAX screen and parts of it in 3D, but I can't imagine the regular movie experience could have been THAT MUCH WORSE. You all have your own opinions, but thank god I didn't listen to your reviews before I saw the movie.
July 5, 200620 yr Just got back from seeing it and i'm not going to say it was the worst movie i've ever seen but it was near the bottom....Way too long....poorly acted.....too few action scenes for an action movie....the only good characters were Kevin Spacey and.......Kevin Spacey. I'm sorry if i'm offending anyone but this is just my opinion.
July 5, 200620 yr Superman will return a profit, but it still will probably not be as big a moneywinner, that was expected. Anyway, saw the movie, nothing special, but better than what I was expecting. Probably would have enjoyed it more if I was a Superman fan, but whatever. Solid movie.
July 5, 200620 yr Forgot to chime in on this, but I was very disappointed. Felt longer than King Kong, kinda corny, kinda all over the place (I mean, did they want to make it a start from scratch or a continuation...just took to long to establish that for me). And, let's be honest, if you're going to do a deus ex machina ending like that, the kid should have had a bigger part in it just for camp/shock value. This is coming from a big comic book fan and a big fan of big blue, so maybe I had higher expectations.
July 5, 200620 yr the only positive was seeing the coming attractions for Invinceable which looks amazingly good but i know i'm the only one to think so.
July 5, 200620 yr My thoughts on Superman: 1. Great effects 2. Routh made an awesome Superman 3. The color palette for the 3rd act was absolutely gorgeous 4. I was a little confused about some bits (how Lex knew where the Fortress of Solitude was) because I never saw the first two movies 5. The whole trip to Krypton could've been filled out better TSwift, just curious, but how do you figure the part with the kid was deus ex machina, from what I understand: Lois and Superman had sex in the 2nd and there are a few implications about the kid being Superman's kid, namely the part where the kid recognizes him and the part in the hospital where Lois whispers in his ear To me it seemed fairly well-established and not some sudden jump to conclusion. Unless I'm rusty on my literary terms.

Unless I'm rusty on my literary terms. Maybe it's me, but I would NOT have guessed it was his kid until Lex asked who his father was on board the boat. The 'whisper' and 'recognition' just didn't give me enough evidence even if I wanted to believe it. Anyway, I do not think you can call him the deus ex machina anyway...the kid didn't really change the plot of the story. Ya he stopped the man from killing his mom, but really that's it. I thought for sure he'd rip that door open, but nope!
July 5, 200620 yr I enjoyed it alot. For anyone to say this movie ranks near the the bottom in terms of bad movies is retarted.
July 5, 200620 yr 4. I was a little confused about some bits (how Lex knew where the Fortress of Solitude was) because I never saw the first two movies He was there in the 2nd movie. I also heard that it was unnecessarily long. Hopefully I'll be seeing it this weekend. What is the reason given for why he's been away? Didn't Krypton blow up in the 1st film?

He goes there only to discover that its a graveyard.
July 16, 200619 yr Author Here is a video of how they made Superman during the 'Shuttle Scene' It's insane how much Superman was probably CG and anyone who has seen the movie probably couldn't tell (I couldn't).
July 22, 200619 yr Author Singer talked to Coming Soon on the DVD and the sequel: CS/SHH: Is the sequel going to happen? Singer: Yes, probably for a 2009 release. CS/SHH: You planted a lot of seeds in the first film, what do you want to cover in the second film? Singer: I'd like to build on the seeds that are planted, you know, expand upon relationships, you've got now a child, you've got these other elements, but also have the opportunity to have the characters more established to bring in some more action and have some more stuff going on. CS/SHH: In the comic adaptation there were little hints that the New Krypton settled into orbit. Singer: Yeah, New Krypton has got these crystals on it, so anything's possible. CS/SHH: What do you have in store for us on the DVD? Singer: A number of things. There's the in-movie experience where during the movie you'll be able to pop-off to the set and see things live as they were shot. There's things like that. Plus we had a continuous presence of video on the set to the point... there's a lot of funny, interesting, kind of theater that you don't get to ordinarily see in the documentary material and then there will be deleted scenes. CS/SHH: Do you want to do the entire sequel in 3-D? Singer: I'd like to do more, I don't know how that whole experience would work out, depends how long the film is, it will probably be shorter. CS/SHH: What's next for you? Singer: Possibly a smaller film and a grand vacation. Source
August 19, 200619 yr Author Horn declined to divulge figures, but a person familiar with the studio's internal projections said Warner's cut of the "Superman Returns" profit was expected to be $50 million to $60 million. The film cost $209 million to produce and more than $100 million to market worldwide. Horn expects "Superman Returns" to eventually gross about $400 million worldwide, more than last year's hit "Batman Begins." Nonetheless, "Superman" fell at least $100 million short of his expectations. "I thought it was a very successful movie, but I think it should have done $500 million worldwide," Horn said. "We should have had perhaps a little more action to satisfy the young male crowd." Still, he's betting Warner has firmly reestablished the "Superman" franchise and is planning another installment for summer 2009. It turns about a 90 million+ profit after initial returns didn't look well. I'm glad to see they are giving it at least one more movie, it deserves at least that. Warner Brothers has put out 2 of the 3 best comic book/graphic novel movies in the last three years as far as I am concerned and yet they haven't been financially lucrative. Sad really.
