Trading Dontrelle.

Featured Replies

I keep going back and forth about trading Dontrelle. I absolutely love Dontrelle but I know we can get players that are going to help us in the long run. Please no more pitchers.

Question #1.... Would you trade Dontrelle if we got the "perfect" players?

Question #2... What are the "perfect" players for this trade? I keep reading in the Dontrelle thread about how we want these players and not these kwim? What players should we go after? Where do they play? Mini stats?

Thanks :thumbup .

Yes, to the Angels. I would take Kendry Morales, Jeff Mathis and either Joe Saunders or Ervin Santana. I know it's alot but that's the price. Morales would play RF, moving Hermida to CF. Mathis would be the catcher of the future and Santana/Saunders woulf fill a spot in the rotation or join the pen.

Holly,

I ask myself this question...When will we be ready to win? 2 years? 3 years? I know we can be competitive, but I mean win the division or wildcard. This includes to ability and willingness of Loria to add payroll when it's needed down the stretch.

Then I say these words...Brad Penny...AJ Burnett....Carl Pavano. Then I look at Dontrelle's mechanics and herky jerky motion.

I think moving Dontrelle (as much as I love him and he IS the face of the Marlins) is a smart move especially for what he can bring. If we can solidify CF, CA, 1B and even more arms for the upcoming seasons I think we have to do it.

Only for Upton, Montero and Quentin.

Upton can be an all star in centerfield according to BA in 2 years, which means we have Hermida and him out there which will be scary good.

Montero behind the plate looks solid to me.

Quentin is a beast of a prospect and could be in Left field, putting willingham at 1st base. Or perhaps putting Willingham as trade bait for a top closer/top prospect back.

Lineup

1. Justin Upton CF - predicted all star

2. Dan Uggla 2B

3. Hanley Ramirez SS - predicted all star

4. Miguel Cabrera 3B - mvp canidate

5. Jeremy Hermida RF - predicted all star

6. Carlos Quentin LF - predicted all star

7. Josh Willingham 1B

8. Miguel Montero C

1. Anibel Sanchez

2. Scott Olsen

3. Josh Johnson

4. Ricky Nolasco

5. Aaron Thompson

That is what I see for a team/rotation in 2 years time from this point with the trade. It could be a team that could compete and be very dangerous

As I mentioned in the other thread - if BA said he can be an All-Star Outfielder in 2 years and he's HELLO 18 years old, I'm pretty sure he's not getting traded.

Most hyped player since Ken Griffey Jr. and Arod. NOT going anywhere.

all the more reason to demand him for Willis whom is the one of the most loved and hyped players in major league baseball.

24 year old lefty SP, first black ace in 25+ years, marketing dream, 3.24 era lifetime, career great winning percentage, under contract for next 3 years, cy young runner up (should of won), Rookie of the year, World series winner and person that got the team going for it. 2 time all star.

Well - personally... I think you're dreaming. They wouldn't trade J. Upton for Dontrelle straight up - let alone w/ Quentin and Montero.

Any GM who made that trade should AND would get fired on the spot.

As much as I love Dontrelle - let's not overrate our own guys here.

I don't see Justin Upton getting traded. He cost them a lot of money to sign, and is very important to their future.

The Diamondbacks, Angels, and Dodgers right now have the minor-league talent to pull off a deal. However, we would probably have to take more hitters than pitchers, as the D-Backs and Angels don't have the same minor league pitching talent as the Dodgers do.

Possibilities:

-Dodgers: Matt Kemp, Chad Billingsley, Scott Elbert, Delwyn Young, maybe Joel Guzman? Andre Ethier would be a nice OFer to pick up, but I would be shocked to see him get traded. Andy LaRoche is almost certainly untouchable. Russ Martin, if available, would be a nice catching pickup.

-Angels: Kendry Morales (maybe...), Erick Aybar, Jeff Mathis and a few others. Dream on if you think they're going to trade Wood. The same applies to Jered Weaver. I would also be surprised if the Angels dealt their best pitching prospect to us, Nick Adenhart.

-D-Backs: Quentin, Jon Zeringue, Chris Young, Carlos Gonzales, perhaps a pitcher like Micah Owings or Dustin Nippert.

true but she asked who we would want not just whom we think we can get :)

What is the story with Montero btw? I have read some nice stuff of him but it seems he isnt a top huge prospect at catcher (not in the top 150) but he gets alot of pub lately as a top prospect.

With Olsen, Nolasco, Johnson, Sanchez, Petit, Pinto, Vargas, and Volstad and Thomson on the way, not all of these guys can fit in a rotation. Willis can get you the most in a trade, and Beinfest has showed the willingness to trade established stud starters at times of high demand (Penny, Beckett, almost Burnett).

Angels, Diamondbacks and Dodgers have the farm systems, according to Gammons... Mariners have an extra catcher now that they have Johjima. Jeff Clement is their number one prospect and is supposed to be a stud at catcher, and their number two prospect is a CF named Adam Jones... I like that trade, if Beinfest can pull it off.

The Mariners would be crazy to trade Jeff Clement. Johjima won't last all that long anyway. They would be better off trading him.

Adam Jones is a possibility. However, I just don't think the Mariners have enough pieces to give us.

I really dont trust the mariner's prospects as far as I can throw them, which isnt far.

They have always one of the worst rated systems around and I really dont think clement is that special. But could be just me.

Trust me, Clement is the real deal. Too bad he's the best prospect in the Mariners' system by far.

Isnt the rest of their system bare as old mother hubert's cubert?

I remember reading on BA, they were pretty much making fun of them.

Clement hasn't impressed me either when I've seen him or listened to the games on the radio. But I don't know too much about the background of the players, so meh.

There are 3 or 4 people on the Missions I would think would be better big leaguers just from what I've seen, but what I've paid attention to is fairly limited this season.

Yes, their farm system sucks. When the Missions affiliation changed from the Dodgers to the Mariners they basically went from 2 time Texas League champs to celler dwellers, which resulted in them going from record setting attendence to near laughing stock.

Dbacks Get:

LHP Dontrelle Willis

(might have to add a pitcher like Gaby Hernandez to get deal done)

Marlins Get:

CF Chris Young

OF Carlos Gonzales

C Miguel Montero

IMO makes sense for both sides.

No.

The franchise needs some semblence of credibility more than a catcher or centerfielder.

At some point, if you want to be taken seriously as a team, you need to stick to the plan that you laid out. Beinfest said that Dontrelle and Cabrera are his ponies in the midst of the fire-sale, there's no way you can scrap that 8 months later.

Unless the team wants to simply be major league in name only.

Trading Willis/Cabrera is much different than all the other trades because those saw veterans leave, not a 22 year old...at least the moves individually made some sense, even if the whole process probably should have seen an interceding by the commissioner's office.

Finally a voice of reason amongst the vultures.

Players with the drive, charisma, and talent that Dontrelle Willis has do not come around often in this day and age.

Why wont some ppl on this board be happy until EVERY player from last year is traded?

Dontrelle Willis isnt going anywhere, Miguel Cabrerra isnt going anywhere. They are the foundation of the future Marlins and Beinfest is building up from there.

I could care less about intangiables and if you take the Pepsi challenge with Dontrelle's rotation numbers you want him gone pronto.

I like Dontrelle but I understand baseball is a business and he's dangerously close to being obscenely overrated and overpaid so moving him would make sense.

My point is, has been, and will continue to be that Beinfest made his plans clear with Dontrelle and Cabrera being the foundation of the franchise. He even said it point blank that they were the cornerstones for rebuilding. You can't abandon that plan 2 months into the first season. That's bad decision making (as we could have tied Lowell to Dontrelle and gotten Lester and Pedroia from the Sox too) bad business and a really sobering statement to the competency of the front office.

If they trade Dontrelle this season, I will be done as a Marlin fan, not because of Dontrelle, I could care less about him, really, but because of what it represents. And that's all anyone should look at now, what he represents to the franchise in terms of tangiable value and past promises that would be unfulfilled by a trade.

I don't believe Beinfest ever said that. I certainly could be wrong but all I remember was hearing Loria say that Willis and Cabrera were like fine pieces of art and you don't get rid of that.

TheDon...we have past the point of being worried about how it looks. We have a new team that looks like it might be very competitive. Having an overworked pitcher coming from an organization that has a history of blown out arms/arm problems...the smart move is to see how we can turn Willis into MORE than Willis.

It's all about the name on the front of the jersey, not the back. Don't believe it? We love Uggla...we miss Luis but Luis who? Oh Alex and that big HR in 2003...seee...we love Hanley.

Speaking of which what would you rather have right now?

Willis, Moehler, Beckett, AJ, Valdez

Willis, Moehler, Johnson, Olsen, Nolasco

I respect your opinion...you definitly have a point....but what will ya say when Willis is having TJ surgery next season or 2008?

Where the hell do you get that?

His motion has been toned down so much it's barely effective anymore and he's yet to miss a start.
