Herald says Wellemeyer to be released...

MARTINEZ UPDATE

Right-hander Carlos Martinez pitched a perfect inning during a rehabilitation start in Jupiter on Wednesday, and after their game with the Giants the Marlins told reliever Todd Wellemeyer he would be released to make room for Martinez to return from the disabled list.

Wellemeyer, acquired in a March trade with the Cubs, is out of options. He was 0-2 with a 5.48 ERA in 21 1/3 innings with the Marlins.

I still think the next logical move is to move (rather than release) Herges, perhaps to Tampa Bay.

BTW, if you're interested the bulk of the piece is on Cabrera and his weight loss. Says at one point this spring he was up to 260 lbs, but in recent weeks he's slimmed down to the mid-240s and looks to shed another 10 lbs through diet and exercise.

Interesting. From the last few posts I responded to have German being released and now Welley. I am guessing they are making room for the youngsters!!

martinez has that wicked slider correct?

and curve as well,if i remember correctly.also has a nice fastball. Why haven't we gotten rid of Herges yet dammit, what do they see in him?

Martinez is back and Tank is here!

What a bullpen we're going to have:

Borowski has been solid.

Messy has been lights out for the past two weeks, same with Kensing.

Tank has been unhittable down in AA.

Martinez looks to be a stud if he can stay healthy.

German has potential if they don't release him.

Release Herges and Wellemeyer and demote one of Pinto/Petit and the bullpen is looking awesome.

So this is the kid they are projecting could become our future closer?

I think he has the stuff to be a future closer...remember he is making a big leap so don't throw the whole kitchen sink at him..he has Major league stuff but remember he was in A ball last year

Not to rain on anyone's parade or to be argumentative but I think moderation regarding how successful Martinez and Tankersley are might be in order.

Martinez last pitched early in the season before most batters had their eye and Tankersley is yet to be tested on the MLB stage. My guess is both will have a period of adjustment and it may not be until the end of the month or even into July before we get a reasonably accurate idea of what they can contribute.

Does anyone remember how we acquired Wellemeyer?

IIRC we claimed him off waivers from the Cubs.

We traded him for Lincoln Holdzkom and another minor leager

Thanks. Does anyone know who that "other" minor leaguer is?

Front office took a shot, and it didn't work out. No big woop.

I believe it was Zach McCormack

Why NOT herges? when has he come through? and he is 36. is he blackmailing joe or something

Perhaps rightly or wrongly, I suspect the Marlins are trying to find a home for Herges purely out of respect for what he's been through with the troubled birth of their child. If we were contending it might be a different story but as it right now they are trying to do the right thing by him.

On the otherhand I could be completely wrong but having been in that position before (as an employer) some people you fire and some people you work to try and make sure they land on their feet. I would guess because he didn't abandon the team early on when the baby was born he's being cut some slack others might not get.

But as I said above, I could be 100% wrong.

For what it's worth, another thought.

Cody Ross, or at least his roster spot, appears to be a waste. Perhaps we'll see him gone or optioned to AAA (if he still has options available) to make room in the bullpen.

Just wild-azz guessing...

was it ever released who we traded for him?

Good point, I believe he'd have to be DFA'd if they remove him. I think his reason for being moved around so much this year is the lack of options or LA or Cincy would've sent him to AAA awhile ago. Not positive though.

I believe it's still a PTBNL.
