June 13, 200620 yr I figured that I would start a discussion of the most publicized cul...I mean religion, Scientology. It's disturbing that many rich people and especially celebrities believe what a science-fiction writer said in one of his many books. This is coming from the same guy who did "Battlefield Earth." Everytime I hear that crazy 'origin of the universe according to scientologists' thing, like they showed on South Park, I have to laugh. If John Travolta needs me, I have one of Xenu's Galactic DC-8 Cruisers to sell him. :lol
June 13, 200620 yr Honestly I would love to have a discussion with a Scientologist about it. It's one of those things I have to hear to believe.
June 13, 200620 yr I'm with HC on this one. The leap of faith it takes to believe a guy is the son of God, committed no sins, and rose from the dead is one thing, but Scientologists take that leap of faith to a crazy new level. What's amazing to me is how freaking powerful this religion is in Hollywood. They appear to be giving the Jews a run for their money.
June 13, 200620 yr Author They appear to be giving the Jews a run for their money. At the very least, it's light years ahead in popularity of kabbalah.
June 13, 200620 yr Yeah, good way to open up discussion with such an a**hole-ish first post. Personally, Scientology doesn't jive with as much of anything that I believe in but unlike what is the popular thing to do now, I'm not going to go out and bash another's religion. I'm extremely tolerant and curious of other faiths.
June 13, 200620 yr Author Yeah, good way to open up discussion with such an a**hole-ish first post. I don't consider it a 'faith'. More of a cult.
June 13, 200620 yr They appear to be giving the Jews a run for their money. At the very least, it's light years ahead in popularity of kabbalah. It's lile Kabbalah-Lite. Great taste, less filling...... :thumbup
June 13, 200620 yr I consider myself an equal opportunity basher of organized religion...to avoid being a hypocrite of course.
June 13, 200620 yr you'll start to hear someone attempt to explain it, and it starts out not so bad... "ok... self-improvement, sounds good.... clear the mind of all the negative energies, right gotcha... okay I see... individual is not a body but a spirit, sounds good, sure... umm, psychiatry is evil.... yeah.. well, okay I guess but.... okay so there's secret levels of knowledge that only some Scientologists get to attain? hmm, sounds wierd. how come the- eh? what's that? Galactic Confederacy? what the F...? beg pardon? who the hell is Xenu? Alien implants?? now just a damn minute here...." and so on & so forth. A lot of it is pretty secretive, there seems to be almost no real critical studies of the religion so it's pretty tough to even have a discussion about it.
June 13, 200620 yr Principles of scientology: -God is infinite & there is no other power -God cannot indwell in a person -God is the only intelligence in the universe I and My Father are One. -John 10:30 Whooops! :whistle

When I was a kid, they'd be near Fenway Park TRYING to literally grab you to watch their "flims" Now THIS says it all about their most famous member http://www.tomcruiseisnuts.com
June 14, 200620 yr Author The South Park scientology episode basically accused the group of taking advantage of people.
June 14, 200620 yr I saw someone with a huge Psychiatry is evil display in a mall in Chicago, but I didn't stop to wonder. Dad was in a hurry. Might have been someone outside of scientology. As for the belief itself, I know absolutely zero about it minus the fact that they don't like psychiatry (and I don't know why) so I can't comment.
June 14, 200620 yr Author I think they believe psychiatry to be a scam, or something. Cruise has looked like an idiot attacking psychology in TV interviews. Mostly he attacked his former wife.
June 14, 200620 yr besides the fact that it has a large following in Hollywood, there is not much to be said about this "religion". its a Joke, religion is a step up from scientology, not a huge step but a step up nonetheless.
June 15, 200620 yr I think they believe psychiatry to be a scam, or something. Cruise has looked like an idiot attacking psychology in TV interviews. Mostly he attacked his former wife. The man is an idiot. Wonder if the Jenny Craig diet is Scientology-based? Kirstie Alley is their spokesperson...
June 15, 200620 yr Author You base your opinion of Scientology on a South Park episode? No. I've read other things about scientology that are far more disturbing than what was shown on South Park. It turns out that scientologists believe that psychiatrists are agents of Lord Xenu, who are attempting to remove people's individuality (no, i'm not making this up).

It turns out that scientologists believe that psychiatrists are agents of Lord Xenu, who are attempting to remove people's individuality (no, i'm not making this up). Tell you the truth, I think most psychiatrists are frauds so I can't say I totally disagree with scientologists there. As far as the Lord Xenu, maybe they don't believe that literally, it's just to embellish the story and get their message across (that psychiatrists remove people's individuality). I never met a scientologist to discuss this in person so I can't say, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume thats the case for now.
June 15, 200620 yr Principles of scientology: -God is infinite & there is no other power -God cannot indwell in a person -God is the only intelligence in the universe Huh, interesting logical contradiction there. God is infinite and yet cannot be in people. Which actually makes God finite. Because there's places he can't go or be.

June 27, 200620 yr The difference b/w scientology and christianity, is that christianity developed as an off shoot of judaism. People began to think this man, Jesus, was the fulfilment of a centuries old prophecy. Islam ws formed in a similar way, another off-shoot of judaism. Thats why it was easy to fall into those new religions. Scientology was created by a science fiction writer, with no basis at all in which to base his theories aside from the fact that he thought it was pretty cool. Now I'm not saying that christianity or islam are necessarily the true and correct religions but it makes sense why those religions are more legitimate than one that was just merely created by some guy. Im curious as to who L Ron hubbard claims to be that he was the one that knew about the beginning of earth and the such
June 27, 200620 yr Author I don't know if this was mentioned, but there is a quote from Hubbard in the 1940's, saying that a man could get very rich by creating his own religion.
June 27, 200620 yr If you guys are interested, here's a short documentary called the unfunny truth about Scientology: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrqIY9AchAM...rch=scientology Obviously there's a few non-academic sources used, but I checked the facts and all the information presented is legit. This is kind of scary, in an Unsolved Mysteries type way. Then, here's a scientology commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpQnwgiplrY...rch=scientology Interesting, considering their stance on actually sharing any information with the public. And for the ultimate in weird: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLZJBdvqAv8...rch=scientology Guy decides he wants to get some film of the Scientology building and gets harassed by security guards. And by harassment, I mean they act like total jackasses while the guy hates on them. Kind of funny, but kind of weird how the security guards, especially the second one, acts. Not saying that's necessarily Scientology, but hey, they're the ones repping it, right (they have t-shirts!!!)? Plus I dig the music. This is supposedly a legit Scientology orientation video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6wQhsVlvDw...rch=scientology Kind of funny how they show you a video proving they're a religion for orientation.
