June 13, 200618 yr Marlins ace Dontrelle Willis fielded questions from fans during an online chat Tuesday. Willis, 24, talked about his accomplishments on the field, his favorite offseason activity, the best thing about being a Major League pitcher and commented on trade rumors. Dontrelle Willis: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining me today. Hope you have some good questions for me. ajnrules: What has been the biggest thrill in your career? Willis: Winning the World Series in 2003. ctmalrinsfan: Hey D-Train! Thanks for taking my question on my 19th birthday! What was your initial reaction when you found out that guys like Jose Castillo and Juan Pierre wouldn't be back this year? Willis: I was upset. Those guys are some of my good friends. But I understand there's a business aspect to the game. Happy Birthday! schacisa: What is most important to you -- Rookie of the Year, the World Series ring, or would you rather have won a Cy Young Award for the most wins in the Majors last year? Willis: The World Series is by far the biggest, because it's a team accomplishment. amanda_short: How did you enjoy your time with the Kane County Cougars? Willis: I loved it there. It's a beautiful ballpark. Very good atmosphere. I liked the fans there. theray13: What's it like to be in the World Series? Willis: It was the biggest thrill being on the biggest stage. Especially being in New York at Yankee Stadium with all that history there. It was incredible. dan_jenicek: Realistically, do you think the Marlins can end the season at least a game above .500 or even .500? Willis: Most definitely. I like the way we've been playing of late. I think we're starting to develop into our own. lazerjackmck: What do you think of Dan Uggla and Hanley Ramirez? Willis: They've both been great. They are the future of the organization. Dan is a gritty player and Hanley has a ton of ability. I like having them behind me. schacisa: Josh Johnson won Rookie of the Month in May. Did you do anything to help him keep winning? Willis: No, that was all him. He's doing OK without my help! Max_Kraft: Why did you choose to wear No. 35? Willis: Because that's the number they gave me. Brandon_Mitchell: Who was your biggest role model as a child? Willis: Dave Stewart from the Oakland A's, because he was an African-American pitcher in the area where I grew up. Adminsw: You are good friends with Juan Pierre. Is the locker room any less fun or enjoyable for you since his departure? Willis: No, because I talk to him now more on the phone. schacisa: What do you think about being the second oldest starter in the rotation at 24 years old? Willis: I feel like I'm 24 years old. It's no different if I'm the oldest or youngest. No one cares about age, when you're out on the field. chickenfoot: What team do you dream of pitching with? Willis: The Marlins, of course. crjr2131: What was it like to play in the World Baseball Classic? Willis: The Classic was a great experience, to be able to play with some of the greatest baseball players in the world and to be around guys like Roger Clemens and Derek Jeter. theray13: What do you say about the bad start to the season? Willis: I stunk. But I'm a lot better now. mtodisco27: Who is your favorite Miami Heat player? Willis: Shaq, because he's the Diesel. Scott_Kraft: What is the best part about being a Major League pitcher? Willis: You work once a week. Sometimes twice. ruu: How do you feel about all the hype on a near-trade involving you? Willis: It doesn't bother me. Thats exactly what it is -- hype. I can only go out and worry about doing my job. nunnally: What is your favorite offseason activity? Willis: Ping-Pong. It improves hand-eye coordination. bigchim: Mr. Willis, I am a sophomore pitcher who wants to pitch in the Majors someday. What advice can you give me about increasing velocity and just becoming a great pitcher? Willis: Keep working hard, and believe in yourself -- anything's possible. atlbravesfan2005: At what age did you start to play baseball and who was your favorite team? Willis: I started playing when I was 10. The Oakland A's were my favorite team. Suzanne_Rayson: Who is the toughest hitter for you to get out? Willis: David Eckstein of the Cardinals. He doesn't try to do too much, and takes what you give him. 06marinersfan: Do you like video games? Willis: I like them, but I'm no good at them. brendan_bechthold: Was it hard to make it into the Major Leagues? Willis: Heck yeah it was hard! aimster84: How is Hanley feeling after that nasty spill he took in San Diego? Willis: He should be OK. He got some rest on the long flight back, and we'll see how he is today. Base_Ball_2: Do you play fantasy baseball? Willis: No, I play real baseball. But it feels like it's a fantasy. ajnrules: What sort of things do you do in your free time? Willis: I like to go out to eat! Houston's is my favorite. txfish: What adjustments have you made in the last couple of starts, since you have been pitching lights out? Willis: No adjustments at all. They just started hitting the ball at people. That's the game. brandon_crockett_2: Did you ever play against Jimmy Rollins when you guys were in high school or Little League? Willis: No, because he's older than me by four classes. But we played basketball together. dolfanlen: Now that you have a World Series ring, what other accomplishments do wish to achieve during your baseball career? Willis: To stay healthy and pitch for as long as I can. The ring was the biggest thing -- I'd like to get some more. aimster84: How do you stay focused on the mound when an opposing crowd boos you? Willis: I try to play better, so they boo me even more. gatorownage: What's something that not many people would know about you? Willis: They don't know for a reason! Honestly, I'm a pretty open guy. Willis: OK everyone. I have to get dressed for batting practice. Thanks, take it easy
