Brandon Roy will be the player most likely to make an immediate impact in the league out of this draft class.

 

I think his game translates very well to the Association. He has good size and he is NBA strong already. Mid-range game is top notch. I see him making a smooth and easy transition next year.

 

As for the Magic I originally thought Redick would be a good fit, but your backcourt would be one of the smallest in the league and probably get manhandled defensively. I think Redick in the right spot is better then a Brewer, but for the Magic he makes sense and I would be shocked if he isn't there at no. 11.

 

Id crap my pants if we got Roy, but now it looks like he is even moving out of our trade range. Funny, a midrange prospect I want my team to draft starts getting big hype and moves well out of our range...just like the fins and Cutler.

 

I think Redick will be taken by the Rockets but he wont be the top choice for the Magic if he is there. They prefer the better athletes/defenders in the three guys I mentioned, I believe. But it wouldnt be a bad thing if we got him. Nice shooter off the bench. Would get a lot of open looks.

I don't buy what Chad Ford is selling. Using Dorrell Wright to move up to get Diaz? Please tell me no. We finally saw Dorrell play at the end of last season. He looked good.

 

Diaz is a great athlete, but a terrible basketball player. IMO, his ceiling as an NBA player is as a poor man's John Starks. Which means he's going to be, at best, one of those energy guys you bring off the bench hoping they'll give you a lift, but most of the time he's just going to run out there, chuck up a bunch of shots, and shoot around 40%. I don't think he's a quick study either; it's telling that he can still barely speak any English.

I don't want to trade Wright at all. From the little we've seen of him, he has some serious potential. And if Posey doesn't come back, he could jump right into the regular rotation.

Here's an update on Dorell. According to the article, some on the Heat coaching staff say his athleticism exceeds even D Wade. You're gonna trade that for Guillermo Diaz? Color me doubtful.

Why would the Suns be interested in a deal like that? Aren't Amare and Tyson similar players? I'm in no way suggesting that they are in the same league, but their styles of play seem very similar.

If ever there was a time to start rebuilding, it is now, Next year's draft is shaping up to be one of the best. They could probably get a ton from the Hawks for Iverson and they should.

Gibson to the Cavs would be a damn good fit, imo.

The Warriors need Patrick O'Bryant..they need the inside presence. There is no inside game on offense...Adonal Foyle can't make a two footer...Troy Murphy lives and dies on the three point line...Mike Dunleavy is worthless in every aspect...Andris Biedrins and Zarko Cabarkapa are too skinny, Ike Diogu's too short...basically, our best inside guy is Chris Taft

Basically, O'Bryant is really the only option...Bargnani will be the first pick, and the Warriors don't have the chips to trade up...Tyrus Thomas and LaMarcus Aldridge will both be taken by the time the Warriors pick (and aren't really the guys the warriors need either), and Sheldon Williams (who may be taken by the time the Warriors pick), is practically a clone of Diogu,

The team needs to be built around BD, and JRich...Murphy would be alright if we had a center that could shoot from the inside and Foyle would be alright if we had a dominating offensive power forward, but they don't work well together...it's much easier to find a center to compliment Murphy than a power forward to compliment Foyle, and IMO O'Bryant could be that Center

Then we need a small forward...Dunleavy's worthless, and Pietrus turned to crap when he got a chance to start...I kinda want to see Monta Ellis start, but he's too small to start and with BD's salary at point and having one of the best SGs in the NBA, there's really no room for him...I guess start Ellis at shooting guard and move JRich to small forward, as he has the versatility to do it

While his game isn't particularly impressive and his decision-making leaves much to be desired, Guillermo Diaz is a ridiculous athlete, and he can attack the rim with the best of them.

 

I'm convinced he'll end up surprising many people.

He's a great athlete...but the gap between him and his defenders will be much narrower in the NBA. Ultimately, you need more than athletecism to succeed in the NBA, and I maintain that Diaz just lacks basketball skills and smarts.

 

He'll surprise me if he ever shoots above 42%.

 

And, FWIW, I have trouble buying that Riley is that into Diaz. How much has he even seen him play, I wonder? He's probably been pretty busy coaching the team and what not.

UNDERRATED: Dee Brown, 6-0, PG, Illinois, Sr.

(Stock status: second round)

 

If speed is at such a premium, why is Brown so overlooked? The two swift floor generals at the forefront of the pro discussion are Rondo and Lowry, and both are widely expected to be first-rounders, while Brown -- an Orange blur at Illinois with a winner's mentality -- slips to the second. Had he not broken his foot at the '05 Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago, Brown would already be playing a serviceable role as a backup point guard in the pros. Instead, after the Illini's magical title game run in '05, he returned to Champaign for a senior season that was by and large a letdown ... and sunk back to relative anonymity in scouts' eyes. The issue: As the focal point of Illinois' offense, he shot miserably: only 35.9 percent after hitting at a 49.9 percent clip as a junior. But if Brown is on the floor with a star two guard or wing player in the NBA, he'll thrive -- not to mention have more energy to uphold his reputation as the Big Ten's best on-the-ball defender.

Diaz is another workout wonder who amazed NBA teams with his vertical (unofficially more than 45 inches) and his quickness and has reportedly made strides in recovering from the knee tendinitis that grounded him somewhat in '05-06. He may very well have a career in the NBA, but using a late-first-round pick on Diaz, even in this weak draft, seems like an unnecessary risk. Highlights of his dunks are stunning, but in the department of effective, team-oriented guard play, Diaz frequently came up short at Miami. For a guy who will need to spend some time at the point in the pros, that makes him a hard sell. The 'Canes had more than enough talent this season to make the NCAA tournament out of an ACC that was wide-open after Duke, and yet with Diaz as their de facto leader they beat only one tourney team (UNC, in January) and finished below .500 in the league.

 

UNDERRATED: Mike Gansey, 6-4, SF/SG, West Virginia, Sr.

(Stock status: mid-second round)

 

There is a dearth of quality shooters coming out of the college ranks; in the first round, only Duke's J.J. Redick and Rutgers' Douby are considered lights-out 3-point gunners. Gansey is the later alternative and could turn out to be a major steal for a team willing to snatch him early in the second round. He has a quick release and decent size, and hit 42.9 percent of his threes in the regular season in '05-06. Gansey is a Moneyball-type basketball player in that he's ultra-productive: His offensive efficiency rating (from Ken Pomeroy's database) was 123.8, which ranked him sixth in the nation among players who use at least 20 percent of their team's possessions. Pomeroy says that for a star player, anything over 120 is excellent -- and Gansey finished ahead of both Adam Morrison (120.0) and Redick (120.2).

 

OVERRATED: Josh Boone, 6-10, C/PF, UConn, Jr.

(Stock status: late first round)

 

The talk of Boone as a late-first-rounder -- which seemed like a sure bet a month ago -- may not turn out to be true. In that case, teams (like the Knicks) have wised up and realized that while Boone once looked like a lottery pick, in his current state he's no more than an end-of-the-bench player, at best, in the NBA. He's an intelligent, thoughtful kid with a long, shot-blocker's body, but one scout said he thought Boone "plateaued" after a promising season as a role player on UConn's '04 national championship team. His numbers dropped in every relevant category (minutes, points, rebounds, blocks, field goal percentage, free throw percentage) from his sophomore to junior year, which concluded with a six-point, four-rebound disappointment against George Mason in the Elite Eight. "[boone's] lack of thrust and motor is really going to hold him back," the scout said. He's also a 54.7 percent free throw shooter, which isn't Shaq territory but isn't pretty, either. Boone could be a decent backup in the NBA, but it'll require a serious rededication to the game.

Don't forget Stern's big surprise tomorrow night.
