Olivo & Treanor -- Playing Time Split

Featured Replies

The pitching is carrying the team. We're around 12th in runs scored per game. The main hitting holes are Reggie and Treanor. Olivo is having a very good season at the plate and Treanor is hitting like Treanor. The past few weeks Girardi has split the catching duties 3:2 between Olivo and Treanor. I know that now that Lo Duca is no longer a Marlin that Treanor has replaced him as the league leader in all the intangible blah blah blah stuff. So with all that said the question is should Olivo get more of the playing time... maybe 4 out of 5 games instead of the current 3 out of 5? This would obviously give a boost to the run scoring. I would do it.

Why fix something that ain't broke?

if im not mistaking, i believe treanor catches the lefties...and he is more familiar with them...so despite a lack of offense from big matt...i dont mind him getting two days a week...especially as the dog days loom

maybe Olivo is playing this weel because of the extra rest

:mischief

In my opinion catcher fatigue usually occurs in the second half. Time off definetly helps but playing in Miami is like having a Coors Field effect on fatigue, especially in July & August.

Treanor's hitting about as well as Olivo anyway

Maybe you haven't been looking but Olivo is batting .286 and Treanor .214. That sure isn't "about as well" in my book.

dont say sh*t just to say it...

Olivo is hitting .286 and Treanor is hitting .214

...damn you Marlins2003. :lol

I think Joe Girardi, a guy who made his career as a defense first catcher, is primarily interested in how the catchers work with their pitchers first and foremost. So if Willis and Olsen, two highly strung individuals, react better with Treanor in there, then thats the guy who'll start behind the plate whether he hits or not.

Now if you are in the school of thought that believes a catcher doesnt have any real impact on the performance of a particular pitcher, then you are clearly going to have a problem with Girardi's approach. I'm not, and I don't :)

Plus, keep in mind that having a 3/2 workload split should really help both Olivo and Treanor hold up in the second half. Catching half your games in the heat of Miami is tough work.

1. Average is a terrible measurement

2. There's no such thing as "less crappy"

3. Over the past week, they've both have hit well.

Heck, over the past week, Olivo has gotten more at bats. Why the need to play him more? I wasn't aware Treanor was stinking up the joint or Olivo offered some great hope.

how about the average/on base/slugging argument?... seriously, rferry, Olivo is far and away the better hitter

last 7:

Treanor .250/.333/.625

Olivo .375/.375/.625

Like someone else said, why fix something that ain't broke? It just isn't about hitting ability. Treanor is able to manage the lefties very effectively and to be honest I care more about the pitching than I do the hitting at this point. It'd screw up Willis and especially Olsen to be so comfortable with someone and then have to adjust. And I agree with the point about preventing wear and tear down the road as the season progresses, it's just a smart approach.

He is, but not by a wide margin at all. Why the need for a change?

Why even cite the difference? They're both pretty crappy in my book.

I wasnt suggesting a change

Treanor's hitting about as well as Olivo anyway

214 AVG, 1 HR, 7 RBI vs. 286 AVG, 6 HR, 24 RBI.

About as well? I think not.

I don't know how rferry evaluates hitters but Olivo's on base plus slugging is almost .200 higher than Treanor's and that's a huge difference. Regarding the handling of the pitchers mentioned by ultimopain, if Treanor gets credit for handling the lefties when they do well why doesn't Olivo get credit when he handles the righties and they do well? I haven't seen anything that would make me think that Treanor handles the pitchers better than Olivo.

Olivo is the better player and is having the better year and playing your better players optimizes your chances to win. If Olivo can handle catching 4 out of 5 games I would let him do it. We wont know if he can handle the added work unless we try it.

200-point difference and .280 average or not, a .316 OBP is terrible. And belongs nowhere near the word "better" even if it is in relation to a guy with a .200 point difference in OPS. Crap is crap. Why give the slightly less smelly pair of drawers more starts? Why change a damn thing when we're winning? Is somehow that move from uber-crap to crap going to help the team incredibly? No. So what's the point of making the change?

Anyways, .958 - 1.000 OPS in the past week.

And slightly less smelly crap doesn't call for more opportunities. Perhaps I should have typed 'Olivo's not hitting much better than Treanor'.

You said they were both hitting the same. Thats ridiculous.

A replacement CF will certainly have more impact. Even if we acquire a C, we'll still be rolling out Olivo or Treanor twice a week

I disagree Olivo is crap. Coming into the season I saw him as a backup but he has been a very pleasant surprise and has played very well. He's actually doing better than what Lo Duca did for us in '04 or '05.

If there is something that Girardi must know about its catching. So I will not contradict anything he does in that aspect. Maybe hes doing this so that the pitchers get used to the same catcher or maybe hes doing it so that Olivo gets rest so that he is fresh the entire year. Whatever it may be I have total trust in him.

Also as a pitcher it is a lot easier to pitch when you have the same catcher every day...the catcher gets used to catching you and gets used to how you like to pitch games which makes it a lot easier for the pitcher.
