i've long been against the gang mentality that happens in stadiums - people get too wrapped up into the actions of others, place too much self value into things they can't control

 

I was at the cards/chiefs game last week and there were a few fights on the way out - stupid tango thing to do

 

mob mentality sets in, the emotion of the game and then people deriving their self worth from the outcome - people throwing things at each other, yelling and swearing at each other - it's stupid

 

there was a chiefs fan in my section and this cardinals guy 2 row up from him kept standing up, yelling, swearing, popping his jersey and acting like a drunken ass - that type of stuff is all to common and leads to dumb activities like fighting in the stands

 

don't these people wake up in the morning and have to talk to anyone - "what did you do yesterday?" - "got into a fight at the game" - "really, why?" - "because one millionare scored on another millionare and the dude next to me was happy, so I had to let him know that he sucks, then he said my mother sucks and has always sucked and it just spiraled from there"

I was in section A. And yeah, I'm a little nervous about going to next year's FIU-UM game. That was seriously a really scary experience.

 

Yeah, I was in section U, which was not exactly the middle of UM zone, but certainly mostly UM. An FIU fan was getting yelled at for "being in the wrong section".

 

After the fight, it was pretty tense, but I just tried not to let things get out of hand, and I, sadly, refrained from cheering as loudly as I was before.

 

 

The only thing I could think after it finished was the gang fight scene in Anchorman. "Wow, that really escalated quickly. I mean, it really jumped up a notch". :lol

It was only scary because I'm a girl and hardly the strongest one at that, and people were picking fights and beating up on everyone regardless of gender. Usually I feel safe because of that, but that didn't help me at all today and just seeing things like that happen to people I know right in front of me sucked. You can cheer for your team, but it's still just a football game.

 

UM fans have a tendency of being jerks. Especially the ones who only go to games to drink and fight, which is a lot of them, unfortunately.

probably the worst i've been in was a HS football game - i went to a small school, in a small rural town - we were one of the smallest teams in our class - during the sectional playoffs we had to go to rochester, ny (90 minutes away) to play in the championship against one of the larger schools in our class, which happened to be from an inner city section of rochester

 

they bused up about the entire student population (and I was there as a spectator), plus a lot of our town drove up - complete culture clash, rural rednecks and city ghetto showing all their ugliness throughout the game

 

my school got beat badly - the team had to walk from the stadium to the locker complex - their fans were screaming and yelling at our players, one guy threw a punch at one of our players - this happened next to the student buses where the specators were piling into for the tip home

 

upon seeing this behaviour our students responded and went after the group from rochester - some knives were pulled and a couple fights broke out - thankfully no one was badly hurt before they got us all on the buses - by that time a mob had formed and they were shaking the buses we were in - ended up getting a police escort out of rochester that night - fairly scary

 

we had a basketball scrimmage against that team the next year - tons of tension - had to move it to a neutral gym with only family allowed to attend

So I was there, rooting for UM but not minding FIU doing well for whoever is interested. Here's my recollection of the whole fiasco.

 

I was in row 65 of Section A with three buddies of mine and my girlfriend. Her sister, unforunately for her, was down in Row 19 of Section A with some bum guy. Anyways, here's how it all went down to my eyes. After the second touchdown, making the score 13-0, some players from both sides had a bit of a pushing contest / stare down, which was promptly broken up by the refs after they threw the flag for excessive celebration. The pushing/staring didn't involve any of the players in the celebration so I'm not sure what caused it. Anyways, pretty instantly after the extra point it all started going down. It didn't escalate right away; the fight lingered for a few seconds just between the players on the field as the refs tried to get control. Then both benches simultaneously emptied and players pored onto the field as everyone noticed this wasn't going to be a five second thing. From there, it was amazing and a blur at the same time.....the most notable moment was when an FIU player got body slammed by a UM player in the middle of the whole thing.

 

Now while the fight on the field was cool, the stands got a little messy. The atmosphere was just like a rivalry game as soon as the thing ended. Everyone was standing and chanting. But then the fights began. I didn't see them in utmost detail because I was so high up, but after one broke out in the aisle between Section A and B at least 15 cops jumped over the barricade between the field and the stands to address the situation. After that my friend and I ran down to get my girlfriend's sister and her friend away from all the drama, and as we were a huge rush of police officers stormed up the steps I had just come down as another fight had broken out. We managed to get up without a scuffle as I was wearing my UM hat and we knew basically all of the FIU people in attendance, so it was like safe passage. After that, things calmed down for the most part and the game continued. I think one or two more scuffles broke out but nothing worth writing home about.

 

As far as the impact, it long term will help FIU big time IMO. First off, it's going to add a lot more spice to next year's game. Let's face it, FAU is not a rival. UM.....now that's someone you can hate. Second, FIU is going to get a lot of attention after this. They had played a 7 OT game last week, they just stole away UM's successor to Paul Dee to be their AD, and now they have the balls to punch the big boy in town in the mouth on their very home turf. The footage will be all over Sportscenter and recruits will be watching that footage. While it might not do the best of things for the school's image, it'll certainly do wonders for the name recognition and because of that will help the team get better faster. As far as blake's comments, I'm not going to even let them have a response.

I actually think it will have the opposite effect on the school's recruits. It will recruit the type of players that UM has specialized in since the "Convicts" teams of the late 80's. And that type of stuff will inevitably lead to more stuff like this, and thats exactly what we don't need.

The UM thugs won national championships, and in the end that's what recruits people the most.

 

I don't think it's going to be just thugs saying let me go to FIU. People that would have never heard of the school otherwise and are interested in being in the city of Miami will want to come down. Who knows, maybe it builds the rivalry.....which will be another huge plus.

i was at the game in the west endzone so the fight happened right in front of me..

 

from what i saw an FIU player punched one of the UM linemen in the noggin, followed by some shoving.. but what got the sidelines to get involved was when the FIU player took out the holder from miami.. then the sidelines emptied and all hell broke loose (no idea which sideline rushed first, I was watching the middle of the field).

 

It was pretty crazy..

 

craziest thing I saw was the guy and his crutch in the middle of the field for FIU.. what was he thinking.. he has no pads, no helmet, and is on crutches? not smart.

 

I dont want to say this is acceptable behavior by any means, but I enjoyed watching it, just because I have never seen anything like that in person.

hahaha all I'm saying is quite a bit happened in college football tonight and to read quality input on it you'd have to look hard for it. This Miami-FIU stuff needs its own thread mehtinks.

 

I totally wish I was at this game. I've seen some crazy things at teh Orange Bowl but oh man I would've loved to be there tonight.

This whole thing should be an embarassment for everyone concerned. Sometimes I hate this Miami program, and this is one of those times. They make it really tough to root for them. I hate the fans and the atmosphere they create at the games. It is the least supportive atmosphere imaginable. It's all about hating the other guy, rather than cheering for your own side. I hate that the players are thugs. I hate that the city demands absolute perfection out of a bunch of college kids.

 

Seriously, give me Duke football over Miami football any day. The Blue Devils may suck ass, but at least I don't have to feel dirty just for being a fan. Nothing would please me more than to see Duke knock Miami on its ass next week. I know it's an impossible pipe dream, but it would pretty much make my year.

Also, any chance that idiot announcer was Lamar Thomas? At the very tail end, the other guy calls him Lamar, and he was definitely acting like a Miami guy.

The best way for FIU to grow as a program is to play the best teams. The last thing they want is to be North Texas and live in the Sun Belt for the rest of their existence.

i was at the game (wearing a UM cap and FIU t-shirt), me and my people were entertained by the fight, call us stupid/thugs whatever i dont care, it was crazy and i enjoyed it. the fights in the stands were to much although you know it always happens but of course not to tonights extent. i was watching cops run around breaking up fights and a bunch of riot cops went into our section at one point although they didnt do anything. there were no issues with any UM or FIU fan in my area.

 

the blame on UM is laughable, it went both ways, both teams were involved, i just dont understand why its all on UM.

 

i dont know about the announcer, i havent heard him but if the sh*t i read on here is true then he's an idiot who needs to be fired.
