Miami-FIU Fight: Teams Suspend 31

Featured Replies

Don't worry, Duke is not going to present much of a challenge. Alleva and Roof need to clean out their offices by season's end.

I'm only going to make one post about this subject because this whole situation pissed me off and ruined a great football game.

I was in section L and UM had just scored so I didn't see what happened, however, I've seen the video multiple times and it looks like to me that after the PAT a UM O-linemen shoves an FIU player and the FIU player tackles him, then all hell breaks loose. I don't care who is to blame, some people will blame the UM guy for the shove, some will blame the FIU guy for retaliating, but one thing is for sure, this was an embarassment for both sides and in my opinion the blame should be equal, there should have been cooler heads on both sides to keep this from escalating.

As for in the stands, I was in section L and in our section it was peaceful. There was a mix of UM and FIU fans and it was peaceful, no problems, everyone just cheered for their team and went on their way. I was sad to see the incidents happen near and around the FIU student section, next year they need to make sure that the FIU students are near the FIU band and give them a clear cut section, not the way it was there.

My first reactions after the game was being pissed at the way the ejections were handled, every FIU player that was ejected deserved it and the majority of them were starters including 3 of our 4 starting defensive backs and safeties. The problem was that several major UM players were not ejected including Meriweather, Reddick and Legget.

The suspensions were just released and i'm glad to see that Meriweather and Reddick were dealt with but they were a major reason why UM ended up with a blowout when they should have been in the locker room just like the FIU starters.

One major disappoint for me though was that Legget's name was left off that list. Unfortunately no camera seemed to catch him run up behind the injured FIU player on crutches, sweep his injured leg out from under him and run away like a little punk. If you're going to fight, fight like a man and what he did was a bitch move. I understand that FIU player may have been swinging his crutches, I didn't see it personally and in that picture he is shown watching the action, not doing anything else, but even if he was, why not step up to him face to face, not like a punk from behind.

The worst part of all this is seeing fans condoning this $hit. Initially with Lamar Thomas, what a classless person he is and I hope he's fired. No announcer should act like that on TV. Secondly fans, I hate seeing fans saying that they are glad this happened and that they loved seeing UM "finish the fight". This is college football, not a freakin boxing match, it doesn't matter who started it or who finished it, if you are a fan of either school you should be embarassed by this, accept the suspensions and continue rooting for the good guys.

Lastly, i've heard many people say that they hope next years game is cancelled and that series does not continue. Just because of one altercation doesn't mean they should cancel the series. In all honestly it was a great game and a fun atmosphere before that crap and it would be a damn shame to not let the series continue. I understand UM feels that they have no reason to schedule us, but i'd like to see you try and get 50,000 people in the OB with whoever the replacement would be, considering that an 0-7 sun belt team outdrew the North Carolina game, i'm sure the people at UM realize the benefits of letting this game continue.

If there is one bright side to this for both FIU and UM fans it's that both may get their wish and next year both schools will have new football coaches. It's obvious that neither coach should be at the helms of these schools and i'm hoping to watch this game next year at the OB, without a brawl, and with two good new coaches leading the programs. Honestly, I want to just put this crap behind and watch some football, in our section I led the chant of "Let's Play Football" and it caught on.

Great post, Maxx. I just wouldn't call it a great football game. Yeah, the schools are close to eachother, teh alumni have connections, but this wasn't (and wouldn't have been) a great football game. It was a decent team beating up on a sh*tty one...

You know what, Miami15, it was a great game. FIU's defense was holding the Canes and if FIU had any offense whatsoever, this game ends A LOT closer than 35-0.

Haha, honestly I didn't watch it...it wasn't on tv here and I was too worried about the Auburn game. I'm kinda impressed that they only gave up one touchdown in teh first half. But if you're a fan enough to see a 35-0 loss as a great game, I'm happy for you. Maybe it was a great first half you say, when FIU played way over their heads?

I hate to post after I said I wouldn't but the score was 14-0 against our starters. Our defense was completely depleted after the ejections the rest of the points were scored against players who've barely had any playing time. Anyone who has seen FIU play knows we have a great defense, they didn't play over their heads, they played their game, rushed the passer and Kyle Wright couldn't complete sh*t. Their two scores were made on short fields because of turnovers and crappy punting into the wind.

i understand what your saying about it being FIU but they slammed down Perrelli AND KICKED HIM in the face after already punching him in the face. whats suppose to happen after that? seriously

I agree totally. You don't want to get into fights, and today's suspensions showed that the ones who did are paying the price. I hope UM suspends the most egregious offenders for longer than the 1-game ACC suspension.

But if one of your teammates--the f***ing HOLDER, of all people--is on the ground getting punched and kicked, I'm sorry, that's justification for a fight in my book. Who the hell would let their teammate lay there helpless while various opposing players get their shots in on him? Obviously the refs didn't seem to have any control of the situation.

Something I totally forgot to mention in my post, the refs were horrible and should have called the game tighters as soon as they saw the initial trash talking and stuff between both sides.

Fair enough...you guys saw the game, not me, and the only thing I read about the game was the fight (which I read probably every article in existance on). I love the concept of an FIU-UM rivalry, I was embarassed for both of their programs and schools for what happened last night, and I totally wish I was there because from my neutral viewpoint that looked like one of the most exciting on field brawls in sports in the last 10 years.

Shaq-Man's post is absolute gold.

Yeah I don't think anyone else can pull that off. It just feels 'right' when Shaq-Man does it. Accord, Godspeed.

I'm Sorry but you got to give it up to the Cane players to jumped in that fight to help defend their fellow teammates. and as for the announcer..... That Hurrican pride.... You gotta love it.. it made him mad, he wanted to go help, like he said you dont talk about the U like that. Gotta, just gotta love that pride. i just admire the fact the whole bench came to the aid of the canes on the field. And isnt the announcer Lamar Thomas....a former Cane and Dolphin? To that cane pride and protection : :notworthy

totally agree with you on that one... from the start you could see that the players were testy and talking trash, refs could have done a lot more prior to the brawl.

its called empathy...look it up...its something that i have practiced all my life and learned about its usefulness in various sociology and psychology classes(which i bet you would find quite interesting)...

God, that was my favorite one. If only MB had a rep point system, Shaq-Man would have a page of reps from this post alone.

Just another one of the dumb fans who make us look bad?

Cane pride is not beating the crap out of a worthless football team, Cane Pride is 5 national championships in less than 20 years. Cane Pride is the longest streak of first round draft picks and the most first round draft picks in a single draft ever. Cane Pride is everyone coming back to train at Da U instead of with their professional team. You know what? Cane Pride is being the son, nephew, and grandson of alumni.

Lamar Thomas should never do another Hurricanes game on tv his entire life. An announcer on a nationally televised game (even pay-per-view) should be as impartial as possible. They should NOT want to go down the elevator to help kick the other team's ass in a melee.

How do Reddick, Merriweather and Leggett all not get ejected for their roles?

Same reason the 31 players have only been suspended for 1 game. They're reviewing the tapes to doll out the appropriate punishments.

Im a Cane, so Im obviously biased, but why is all the blame going to UM? I saw the whole thing and I dont condone what Redick did at all or Bryant to a lesser extent, but what about the guy slamming and then kicking the holder Perelli, a backup QB? The whole thing was disgusting, but just because its UM against FIU doesnt make one side more accountable. Another thing thats interesting is that UM is letting FIU use the Orange Bowl next year while FIU renovates its stadium, so they could make them homeless if they wanted to, not that they should or would, but that is an interesting dynamic.

UM doesn't own OB. Miami does.

well, is FIU a real opponent? No disrespect to any FIU fans here, but I sure dont think so

theyre 15-29 all time and have been in D1 for 3 years. why should one of the best football programs in the last 20 years, with 5 national titles, show any respect to FIU?

you say that youre just as unranked as UM is. not really...becuase theres a big difference between 4-2 in the ACC and winless in the Sun Belt

But they are still a D-1 school. They shouldn't have to put up with the disrespect the Canes were showing them. The Canes just did not come in prepared to play the game, because they assumed all they had to do was show up and win. And, yeah they won pretty handily, but FIU did lost their 2 best offensive playmakers and alot of defensive guys, so really, they scored 14 points against the FIU defense and then 21 on their second team. FIU played them almost even in the first half.

what disrespect was shown lastnight by UM?

bobbob makes a good point... from another perspective. Here you are playing football at FIU. Like players at UM or Division III, you view yourself as a football player. And some guy is doubting you? Has absolutly no interest in your abilities. You're going to attempt to show them up. You're going to do anything to gain their attetion and respect. Whether that be by playing harder, cheating, making an ass of yourself or getting into a confrontation with them.

duke is gonna pray for prison sentences just to get away from the fury that miami football will be returning to

You raise an interesting issue. Should the police get involved? The NCAA, conferences and colleges have little incentive to see these players are punished. Granted what happened occured on a football field in relation to a football rivalry. And sporting life and real life should be seperated from the other. But what happened WAS not football. And may not be handled appropriately by football officials.

Don't talk about UM like what? If that's what you call team pride down in Miami, you have no idea what pride is.

I totally agree.

Announcers on nationally televised games should never take one side. Especially in a situation like this. Even in such situations in the past such as this (Bertuzzi, the Pistons Pacers melee, etc.) that were only being shown on local television where 80% of the viewers are watching from the station's local area, the announcers and commentators were not condoning what these PRO / SEMI-PRO / ADULT ATHLETES were doing whatsoever. Thomas was.

The Hurricanes, their franchise and their fan base should be completely ashamed of what went on.

You, good sir, are an idiot. Plain and simple.

All of you people talking about "you don't come into our house" and this and that, I'm just wondering one thing. What year did you guys graduate from UM?

I think if they do cancel it they can use FAU instead of FIU and have the same type of draw honestly. Plus the old UM ball coach at FAU would add in for an interesting side note facing off against Da U :)

Personally I dont think it should be played again.

On a brighter note, this may of officially sealed the fate of Admin Coker

The only reason you don't want to see the game played again is because you like FAU. And book it, this game won't be canceled.

And how do you figure a school outside of Miami-Dade would get the same attendance in the OB as FIU-UM? This is cool because people that go to FIU and UM know each other (both on the football team and just the normal student body) from high school and every day life. As an FIU student I know quite a people that go to UM, but not a one that attends FAU.

Oh, and FIU as more high profile alumni to boast, a bigger reputation (#7 international business school in the country helps), and the intracity rivalry appeal. FAU is just another Florida throwaway that is no where close to the Big Three.

Lamar Thomas will be on Dan Patrick's show in 15 minutes.
