Lamar Thomas to be disciplined for on-air brawl comments

Comcast Sports Southeast general manager Mark Fuhrman said Monday the network is planning disciplinary action against announcer Lamar Thomas for comments he made about the brawl during Saturday's UM-FIU game.

 

''At this point we're consulting with the university and discussing whether to fire him'' or dole out other punishment, Fuhrman said.

 

Thomas' comments, which were aired live on the pay-per-view broadcast, drew about 50 e-mailed complaints to CSS, Fuhrman said.

 

As the brawl was unfolding during the telecast, Thomas said, among other things: 'You come into our house -- you should get your behind kicked. . . . You cross the city! . . I say, `Why don't they just meet outside in the tunnel after the ball game and get it on some more?' ''

 

Fuhrman said Thomas' comments would be edited out of CSS' rebroadcast of the game at noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday.

 

''We don't condone Lamar's statements,'' he said. ``He unfortunately got caught in the emotion of it. He blurred the line between what takes place as a participant and your role as a broadcaster.''

 

Thomas is in his second season working for CSS.

CORAL GABLES ? Former University of Miami receiver Lamar Thomas said today that he has been fired from his job as analyst with Comcast Sports SouthEast because of his comments during Saturday's brawl between UM and FIU.

 

"They decided not to continue with my contract because there's so much heat going on right now," said Thomas, who played for Miami from 1989 to 1992. "I told him, ?You know what, Mr. Fuhrman, I appreciate everything you've done for me.'" Fuhrman could not be reached immediately, but a representative of Comcast confirmed that Thomas had been dismissed.

 

Thomas seemed to be cheering on the UM players who were fighting.

 

"Now, that's what I'm talking about," Thomas said during the broadcast while players brawled on the field at the Orange Bowl. "You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked." "You don't come into the OB playing that stuff. You're across the ocean over there. You're across the city," he said of UM's opponent, which is about 10 miles from the Coral Gables campus. "You can't come over to our place talking noise like that. You'll get your butt beat. I was about to go down the elevator to get in that thing." Thirty-one players have been suspended for their role in the fight.
