October 17, 200619 yr http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...sp&c_id=mlb Phillies to explore trades for Burrell 10/17/2006 10:12 AM ET By Ken Mandel / MLB.com PHILADELPHIA -- Pat Burrell's frustrating 2006 season may lead to be a busy offseason for the Phillies, but one that they hope could provide them with a new left fielder. General manager Pat Gillick, answering a question regarding Philadelphia's offseason plans, referred to Burrell's struggles and sounded as if the team were looking ahead. Gillick indicated on Monday that the Phillies would look to move Burrell, perhaps eating some of his remaining $27 million over the next two years, as long as he would waive his no-trade clause. "We're going to have to continue to look for a little more offense," he said. "We know that at this point, Pat has had a difficult time protecting [Ryan] Howard. We're going to have to continue to have to make an adjustment in that area. And naturally, we're going to have to continue to improve our pitching. "I think one thing that's been proven [in the American League Championship Series] is how well Detroit has pitched. If you look at the seven games they've won, it all goes back to pitching." Gillick believes the Phillies need to upgrade their arms. "We have to improve our pitching," said Gillick. "We have to continue to work on our bullpen, and we have to continue to work on our starting pitching." With free agency looming in two weeks, the Phillies have begun to compile their wish list. It appears to be headed by possible free agents Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez, big right-handed bats who could replace Burrell in the order and hit behind lefty MVP candidate Howard. Lidle remembered: Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., community relations director Gene Dias, counselor Dickie Noles and others from the front office will attend pitcher Cory Lidle's memorial service on Tuesday in Covina, Calif. Shane Victorino and Chase Utley are expected to attend. Lidle was killed last Wednesday when his single-engine plane crashed into a Manhattan apartment building. He pitched for the Phillies for almost two seasons before they traded him to the Yankees in July. Phillers: Phillies Triple-A manager John Russell will interview on Thursday for the Rangers' managing job. Russell, a former Phillies and Rangers catcher, was the International League Manager of the Year after he led an overachieving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team to the playoffs. Just a thought anyone like to see Burrell as our 1st baseman next yr. Could also play in RF
October 17, 200619 yr NO NO NO....This guy is a clubhouse cancer and is so overrated, it's ridiculous....There are major holes in his swing too.
October 17, 200619 yr Why are offensive clubs like philly, boston, and cincy just NOW starting to realize that stacking your team with nothing but offence with little to no pitching gets you no where?
October 17, 200619 yr Yeah, a team that won a world series 2 years ago belongs with the likes of perennial middle of the road type teams. :lol
October 17, 200619 yr Yeah, a team that won a world series 2 years ago belongs with the likes of perennial middle of the road type teams. :lol all offence!
October 17, 200619 yr Yeah, a team that won a world series 2 years ago belongs with the likes of perennial middle of the road type teams. :lol I was thinking about pre 2004 Boston
October 18, 200619 yr :| Like '03 Boston which had Like '99 Boston which had I think one hitter batting over .300 and the Cy Young award winner? The Red Sox are hardly a team that has had a plan of only 'stacking offence', and if you were talking about pre-'04, why bring this up now. Actually, what the heck does any of this have to do with Pat Burrell being traded? :lol
October 18, 200619 yr No way. Pat is all about Pat - ask any UM fan. He actually hasn't made any bad news in the time he's been in Philadelphia. And I don't know how he's a cancer either. He just can't hit in the clutch, which is his downfall, and hopefully he gets his ankle fixed up cause he really can't run either.
October 20, 200619 yr Like '99 Boston which had I think one hitter batting over .300 and the Cy Young award winner? That's the Cardinals this year.
October 21, 200619 yr Pat Burrell=Most overrated player in baseball I didn't even know people thought highly of him!
October 21, 200619 yr Author Pat Burrell=Most overrated player in baseball I didn't even know people thought highly of him! True, I always thought he hasnt really ever had a chance to assert himself. Burrell can hit but he has a lot of injuries as well. I woulf love to see him in our lineup anyway http://www.ondeckbaseball.com/ Hawaii Winter Baseball RF Chris Rahl (Diamondbacks) cranked a 2-run homer and LF Will Venable (Padres) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, as West Oahu crunked Waikiki, 11-6. Is it me or are there Diamondbacks everywhere? Rahl is hitting .280 with 4 runs scored and 4 RBIs in 7 games in the HWB. The talented 22-year-old topped all the minors in knocks this season with 186. He hit .327. Venable hit .314 with Low-A Fort Wayne this season and he?s hitting .310 in his 7 games in the HWB. RHP Rick Vanden Hurk (Marlins) was pelted for 7 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in 3.1 innings pitched to take the loss for Waikiki. He served up 3 gophers. What the heck happened? Vanden Hurk was untouchable in his first 3 outings on the Big Island and then he has a complete meltdown yesterday. Aftershocks? 10/20/06
October 21, 200619 yr Pat Burrell=Most overrated player in baseball I didn't even know people thought highly of him! Well they obviously do, philly fans must think he could do better...otherwise they wouldn't boo him. He has a dangerous bat, he'll either hit the longball or strikeout. he only hits .250, so really he's not much better than a russel branyan. who seems to be a better player branyan or burrell? even though they do have similar numbers. (yes, i know branyan was injured and struggled in the power department this year).

But they are similar type players, although Burrell has much better production. Obvioulsy if one could be on my team it'd be Burrell. maybe Chris Shelton is a more adequate comparison.
October 21, 200619 yr I can't stand him. I don't want him. I will miss messing with him from the stands though.
October 21, 200619 yr :| Like '03 Boston which had All their hitters in the original line up hit atleast 12 HR's and many had 80-90 RBI's. also outside Pedro, timlin and Kim, there wasn't much to be too proud of, Lowe's wins were kind of how Steve Trachsel got his wins, he pitched quality starts but the offence got him through too. The Red Sox are hardly a team that has had a plan of only 'stacking offence', and if you were talking about pre-'04, why bring this up now. Actually, what the heck does any of this have to do with Pat Burrell being traded? :lol I was just thinking about how the phillies have been a club that focuses a lot on offence and their pitching was made up of vets like Lieber and Lidle. :whistle
