October 23, 200619 yr Jamie Moyer will be 44 when the 2007 season starts, but the Phillies are banking that he has two more strong seasons remaining in his left arm. Philadelphia signed Moyer to a two-year, $10.5 million extension Monday. Moyer, who was acquired from the Mariners during the 2006 season, went 5-2 with a 4.03 ERA in eight starts for the Phillies and was 4-1 in September when the team made a failed push for the NL wild card. "Jamie was one of our more effective pitchers down the stretch," Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said. "He was an asset to our ballclub not just for his performance on the field, but also for his presence in the clubhouse." Overall in 2006, Moyer was 11-14 with a 4.30 ERA in 33 starts with Seattle and Philadelphia. He pitched at least 200 innings for the sixth straight season and eighth in the past nine years. Moyer, who made $5.5 million this season, is a two-time 20-game winner (2001-03) and went to one All-Star Game (2003). He has a career record of 216-166 with a 4.17 ERA that includes stints with five other teams. Among active pitchers, Moyer ranks seventh in wins, fifth in starts (518) and innings (3,351) and 10th in strikeouts (1,992). http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2635825
October 23, 200619 yr What's amazing to me is that at such an age, usually it's the years or the money, in this case, it was both. Either this market is going to be absurd for pitching, or the Phillies really messed up. Most likely both.
October 23, 200619 yr He can still pitch well - especially since the free agent market for pitching isn't deep this year. Has he had any arm problems recently?

October 24, 200619 yr Not a good move. They need to focus on getting an ace! Really, this team isn't going anywhere!
October 24, 200619 yr Not a terrible signing. He had some good outings for the Phillies this season and it isn't like FA starting pitchers are clamoring to get a chance at regularly taking the mound in Citizens Bank Park.
October 24, 200619 yr I don't get what is so "WTF" about this. Not only is he a veteren that can show the young guys something, he PWNED the Marlins last year and was good with the Phillies. Come on people, when will we realize that age means nothing in Baseball.
October 24, 200619 yr Contract details: All he has to do is stay healthy to earn the full $14 million. Moyer will receive a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $6 million in 2007 and $3.5 million in 2008. If he pitches 170 innings in 2007, he gets $4.5 million in 2008, and if he hits 180 innings, he gets $5.5 million in 2008. He also gets $500,000 if he hits the 165-inning plateau in 2008, another $500,000 for 175 innings and another $500,000 for 185 innings. http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/15833910.htm
October 24, 200619 yr not a great signing. but we are talking about the Phillies. They have money to spent, and it is a short term deal. very little risk, IMHO

Front loaded contract and he's essentially cuttable at his guaranteed '08 salary. He only becomes expensive if he's effective, and why would you dump him then?
October 24, 200619 yr Don't forget that both he and Hamels use the changeup as their best pitch, and Moyer's is very good, whcih is why he's still around now. If he can continue to be a mentor for Hamels, it could turn Hamels from being a great youngster, in an ace.
October 24, 200619 yr I expect Moyer to bring the heat again next season..how hard is he throwing now? 70?
October 25, 200619 yr Kenny Rogers got a 2 year deal from Detroit didn't he? rogers is much better, that's the difference. He's got some nasty stuff too.
October 25, 200619 yr uhh...where's the problem? Put up league average innings in an extreme hitter's park and his deal is connected to durability. Good signing.
October 25, 200619 yr Kenny Rogers got a 2 year deal from Detroit didn't he? Rogers also isn't 44. He was also an all-star pitching in Texas. It not shocking he's pitching great now that he's in a pitchers park. The opposite is true for Moyer, which is why this deal sucks for them.
October 25, 200619 yr The problem with this signing is you can't rely on Jamie Moyer to be a 1 or 2 pitcher for you. At best he's a 4 at this point in his career and if the Phils want to get to the post season, do they want to be spending this much money on a #4 pitcher?
October 25, 200619 yr Moyer has been better in his career than Rogers, for what it's worth. not really, they're numbers are pretty similar. I'd prefer to have Rogers on my team..

He's got a 3.84 era in a pitchers park. I wouldn't say any team is in good shape if they have to rely on Rogers as a 1 or 2, his baffling postseason not counting.
