PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Sandy Alomar Jr. agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets on Monday.

The 40-year-old, expected to report to spring training Tuesday, hit .278 with 30 RBIs in 108 at-bats last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox, who acquired him July 23.

A six-time All-Star, Alomar was the 1990 AL Rookie of the Year. His father is starting his second year as the Mets' third-base coach. His brother, Roberto, struggled with the Mets during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

No, because 1. Miami is not New York, 2. the Marlins are not the Mets and 3. we don't have an Alomar on the payroll

But the Mets cannot offer the playing time we can, even in a backup capacity.

I guess the major league minimum is just too much to ask for at this point.

we have a backup thanks

One who's in a perpetual battle with the Mendoza line.

name a backup catcher who isnt battling the mendoza line or one who plays as good of defense as treanor and is a low priced free agent and ill give him a look...until then...treanor is fine by me

I doubt Sandy at his age performs that much better than Treanor.

oh yeah he can ... he might not be able to catch as good as treanor but at least he can hit the ball, and when I say catch as good i dont mean it literally since Sandy can still handle a pitching staff

A backup catcher is not required to hit, they just need to play solid defense.

Is this thread a big joke on me? Whats going on here?

Having a backup catcher who has a good rapport with the pitchers and is sound on defense is all I really care about... so I have no problems with Treanor. Seemed like his bat was coming around a little bit at the end of the season too.

Comparing Alomar's hittings stats with Treanors, not really that much of difference.. and when you consider Treanor has handled this staff before.. theres just absolutely no reason to replace Treanor with Sandy, especially when Alomar is 40 and can't throw anybody out.
