Gathright will not be starting for the Royals this season but he played well for them in 2006. They desperately want to replace Angel Berroa at shortstop. So with those factors in mind why not offer them Petit and Andino or Amezaga for Gathright and catcher Paul Phillips? I think the Royals would do this in a heartbeat.

why overpay?

just go Andino for Joey(even though Id prefer one of their many other OFers)

What the Royals need are some pitching prospects in their minor league system. They have position players of every description coming out their butts but their recent draft classes have been "largely" (there are exceptions) failures when it comes to pitchers.

I've been posting all winter about the KC situation and hardly think Andino would be considered any kind of upgrade over Berroa. Petit for Gathright, if we're not using him to get Benitez makes some sense, but frankly Harvey Garcia or Jesus Delgado or someone not in the top five but better ranked than 20+ might be more appropriate. This is Gathright's last option I believe and there's so many guys coming up through the system they either lose/trade him this season or next.

As for other outfielders, you aren't going to pry Butler away but Maier is probably the guy you want to target if you're willing to give him half a season to grow into the job. He's defensively ready and had a great AFL offensively.

The thing is with Gathright is that now that he's in the hands of a sane general manager his value will be much more realistic, meaning that you won't be ponying up an Olsen or Johnson for him, and even if he doesn't work out (although he has a better chance this season of doing so) it won't have cost the team a fortune in talent.

Shane Costa probably isn't making the team either.

The Royals are pretty high on Maier as they should be and he's probably not available either. Gathright would probably be the most likely to be traded out of the three you mentioned. Petit for Gathright could work but KC might want a little bit more. Maybe something like Petit and Chris George for him. That could work.

Is there really a difference between Petit, and Petit and George?

I would not trade Petit for Gathright.

However, I would not be opposed to trading for Gathright.

NO doubt, there is NO way i give up Petit for Gathright.. Now if we are talking Andino and someone else, I'll do it in a snap!

really some of you just pull names out of a hat when you propose these deals.

its quite amusing.

So What, isn't that what most people do, including the media. Look at all the times the Mets or Yankees have traded for D-Train in the last two years. But it is fun when people offer up Eric Reed for Chris Carpenter and cash (a joke, dont anyone write back and say "show me where that was done")

:thumbup

i'm not trading any starting pitching with the way Kranitz goes through arms.

Petit is a starting pitcher?

lol the Royals probably don't want Chris George back in their organization

I can see your point but he has improved since his stint with the Royals, believe it or not.

This is like reading a Devil Rays messageboard.

People,

(1) like it or not the Royals already have a better shortstop than Robert Andino who they are trying to upgrade.

(2) They need pitching, both in the now and in the future.

(3) Dayton Moore (came from the Braves) is as smart as Admin Beinfest and this is a good thing. If there is a deal to be made here, those two individuals with their first class staffs will make it, unlike dealing with the lunatic fringe, the ravings and demands we're accustomed to from Tampa.

(4) Kansas City has as much to prove in their division as we do in ours. We could be excellent trading partners for years to come.

(5) The first player they will offer is Reggie Sanders who they desperately want to jettison.

For Beinfest to make a deal for Gathright (if he's still interested in the guy) he has to politely say no to Sanders while keeping discusions alive for Gathright who legitimately has zero future with them unless a slew of injuries happen simultaneously. They just moved Teahen to CF (from RF where he went to makeroom for Gordon at 3B) while DeJesus is ill with a stomach virus rather than play Gathright or Costa I suspect to literally send up a roman candle so everyone notices "we have CFs coming out our butt over here" !

I still think our CF is likely to come from LAA or KC and it won't be cheap, but it will be fair.

I'd rather go to De Aza as a backup option than trade for Joey. In fact, I'd be happy if the Marlins gave De Aza the starting centerfield job.

you could argue that Andino has more upside than Berroa, he certainly has a much much much better glove

ya but those trades dont normally include players the other team recently gave up on.

On a side thought.

Dayton Moore in KC is the best thing for that franchise since the Brett years. He will get them back to respectability. The fans there are by and large really great fans, its just hard after so many years of losing. I could easily see them turning it around in 2-3 years and really making some noise, getting that stadium truly rocking again.

Given the current options, just can't any reason not to agree. I know he has hit this spring, but don't know much about his defense or his arm. If he is not a liablity, (Juan Pierre type rag arm) then I might go for it. I see Reed's offensive stats this spring, but only being to one spring game, I don't know if has had any pop on his hits. You just can't bunt all year long and get away with it. What's the scoop on De Aza's defense?

I agree with you Das. The Royals have some very nice pieces and are going to add another one in this upcoming draft with David Price or Matt Weiters. The offense is a piece or two away from being great, and Dayton Moore will make that pitching staff formidable.
