Olindo Mare has gotten his wish of playing for a new team, with the Dolphins having traded him to the Saints for a 2007 sixth-round draft pick (199th overall).

Mare, who began kicking for the Dolphins in 1997, became expendable last month when the franchise signed former New York Giants kicker Jay Feely as his replacement. But the Dolphins refused to immediately cut Mare even after he publicly asked for his release because the franchise was hoping to trade him.

Mare is expected to replace John Carney, the Cardinal Newman High graduate who has kicked for the Saints since 2001.

The Dolphins now have recouped an extra sixth-round pick the franchise lost Saturday when a trade of Dan Wilkinson to Denver was rescinded when the defensive tackle failed to report to the Broncos.

Wow. I know it's only a 6th rounder, but teams had to know we had our hands tied after signing Feeley. Noway we would have kept Olindo's large contract on board. I'm shocked we got anything at all compensation wise.

im happy we got a extra pick now since fat daddy dan wilkerson screwed us over by not reporting to the broncos. the only thing im upset about is that we treated him like crap during the whole process. Id expect that kind of treatment from someone like saban, but then again i dont really know mmuch about cameron

i havent been following the Dolphins much after their season so this was a surprise to me. its all for the better i guess, do what u gotta do.

Ehh...I hate the Jay Feely signing. We're basically getting the same field goal kicker with a weaker kickoff leg at the same price.

Glad we got something for him, though.

ding...worst move of the offseason...feeley is terrible

as a fellow Cooper City resident, I am saddened by the trade. :(

You might disagree with the Feeley signing, but I can't see how you can possibly dislike the trade. Feeley was going to start regardless and Mare most likely would've just been released. The Saints were pretty naive to trade a 6th rounder for a kicker we weren't going to use anyway. This is pretty much a free draft pick for the Dolphins.

well quite honestly, I'm not a football fan, I'm not a Dolphins fan (Falcons for me), so in that sense it makes no difference. Just sad to see a Cooper City native have to move away
