April 17, 200719 yr I really feel for this poor kid's parents. Must be the most terrible lonely feeling in the world. The families of those killed by him also must be going through some very terrible emotions. I really hope closure comes quickly and justly. Agreed. It is almost unfair what they will have to deal with. I remember how much 'crap' the Klebold and Harris families had to deal with after Columbine. Its going to be a pretty vicious event.
April 17, 200719 yr good to hear all your friends are okay over there Dodge, & anyone else who knew people at Va Tech. Why is it always men who do this stuff? Still waiting to hear from 2 of them.
April 17, 200719 yr doesn't make sense that they still think it was one shooter...what happened in that two hours?? I don't know how long removed you are from college, but it's completely believable. I mean, here at NYU my freshman year we had a rash of like 7 or 8 suicides within a month and a half. NYU denied that anything was happening until the NY Post put a picture of one student falling on its front page...only then did they e-mail us. Schools don't want a whole lot of press and they just pray that incidents are isolated. It's is reprehensible and irrational and I hope that something is learned from the glacial pace of the VT administration, e-mails allegedly did not go out regarding the first shooting until after the second shooting had already ended..

They didn't say anything about the suicides before then? How big is NYU? We had a suicide here last week (granted he stood on the train tracks for all to see and it completely cut off the entrance to campus so everyone was talking about it/wondering who it was), but we got an email within hours of it happening. I guess because we have a small campus it makes that big of a difference. And we've had 3 or 4 emails since then talking about services and other memorial stuff for the kid.

It's a decently big school, I don't know the number off the top of my head, but the reason it was avoided was because of fear of negative press. I mean, the NYPD volunteer-officer that was shot in that restaurant shooting in Manhattan on Houston Street was an NYU student and we've yet to get an e-mail. It's just the way some schools work.
April 17, 200719 yr The mother of the girl I know up in VT works with my mom. She has been looking for a flight for tonight so she can go be with her daughter. The girl is pretty depressed. One of her friends got shot, but survived.
April 17, 200719 yr This is going to have national repercussions. It's a shame that we will become a nation of either concealed weapons carriers or there will be a metal detector on every campus and fences around each entrance. The fact of the matter is there is no safe place anymore.
April 17, 200719 yr They cancelled the Spring Game which you could agree or disagree with. I think it should have been cancelled although it certainly would have brought the community together.
April 17, 200719 yr I notice the ACC has not mentioned a thing about this. I think having a black stripe for all sports for 1 year would be appropriate.

You really think that if everyone carried concealed weapons they would just kill people at the drop of a hat? MOST people aren't stupid. Most people aren't mentally derainged. Most people don't want to kill people. If one person in the class had a gun on him, he could have prevented this. I'm not a fan of guns, but in situations like this, it's a necesary evil. The f***ing campus police didn't even have guns. WTF?

WTF? im not saying everyone would kill each other at the drop off a hat...but damn...how many accidental shootings and deaths come at the result of a gun everyday in this country? i dont know...but im pretty sure its an ugly number...and yeah...most people arent mentally deranged...but really...why put guns in the hands of people who would even be in question of their mental capabilities...and i dont believe if one person had a gun in class could have prevented this...what if a gun battle ensues and more innocent people die? yeah...what a brilliant idea...lets give an extremely violent society the great privelage of carrying a concealed weapon...see how many crazies come out of the woodwork lookin for their glock and an ex lover...the only thing true you said about guns is that they are evil...

The f***ing campus police didn't even have guns. WTF? This will have national repercussions only to the extent of colleges reviewing and revising as necessary there response to emergency situations. College campuses are a cocoon environment. A place of refuge, learning, and openness. The greatest tragedy that could occur would be if this solitary tragic act changed that and campuses had metal detectors and fences and heightened security. This will not happen. The idea that a few have proposed that students start packing weapons is lunacy.

Yeah because people weren't killing each other before guns existed.
April 17, 200719 yr Can someone explain to me why the heck the campus police didn't have guns? I've been confused on this. I see VTPD has the authority to carry firearms, but they didn't seem to use them if they had them.

April 17, 200719 yr Just got an email from FSU. They want all students to register their cell phone numbers with a database so they can send emergency messages directly to you. I think this is very smart, and I'm happy the school is being proactive.

I think this is very smart, and I'm happy the school is being proactive. I saw that FSUPD had their eAlert system up and running....I guess they want us all to join it ASAP. Just checked my FSU Webmail.....let me go register my cellular phone. FSU's message about the Virginia Tech tragedy

If you really wanted to kill your ex-wife I doubt that not being legally allowed to carry a gun is going to stop you. Believe me, guns are quite easy to get illegally.
April 17, 200719 yr Seeing his picture angers me even more....I wish they plugged this kid with so many bullets that the pain he was in wasn't even close to the others pain.
April 17, 200719 yr Didn't see this posted: From CNN's article: A fellow student said the 23-year-old English major had written two plays so "twisted" that his classmates suspected he might become a school shooter. Ian McFarlane, who said he had class with Cho, called the plays "very graphic" and "extremely disturbing." McFarlane is an employee of AOL, which has provided the writings to CNN. (Read McFarlane's blog and the two playsexternal link) "It was like something out of a nightmare," McFarlane wrote in a blog. "The plays had really twisted, macabre violence that used weapons I wouldn't have even thought of. "Before Cho got to class that day, we students were talking to each other with serious worry about whether he could be a school shooter." A university official also said that Cho scribed writings so "disturbing" they were sent to administrators, a university official said Tuesday. The official did not provide details about the writings, which first came to the attention of faculty in the English department, but said they were passed on to the department chairwoman and university administrators. Well that's certainly interesting.
April 17, 200719 yr I don't mean to sound morbid or anything, but I'm curious to hear the content of those writings. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years...7071vtech1.html
April 17, 200719 yr So, ABC decided to offer an expanded hour-long version of ABC World News Tonight, and I guess they offered each affiliate the option of showing the whole thing. Our local WPLG decided to air Wheel Of Fortune, which I find kind of shameful.
April 17, 200719 yr VT's Engineering Department was dealth a big blow by this. Prof. Liviu Librescu, 76, an Israeli born in Romania, survived the Holocaust and built an international reputation for his research in aeronautical engineering. He taught at Virginia Tech for 20 years. According to e-mails sent by students to his family, the professor saved their lives by blocking the doorway of his classroom from the approaching gunman before Librescu was fatally shot, as students jumped out of windows. Prof. G.V. Loganathan, 51, an Indian-born civil and environmental engineering professor, had been a professor at Virginia Tech since 1982. "For us it was like an electric shock. We've totally collapsed today," his brother G.V. Palanivel said from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. "Our parents are elderly and have broken down completely." Courtesy of CBS News Even with this.......Virginia will still stay for lovers! So, ABC decided to offer an expanded hour-long version of ABC World News Tonight, and I guess they offered each affiliate the option of showing the whole thing. Our local WPLG decided to air Wheel Of Fortune, which I find kind of shameful. WPLG is a sad excuse for a news operation. They kill the 5pm newscast for Dr. Phil and then do this. They think that by hiring Max Mayfield they will get better hurricane ratings, but we all know the day Don Noe hangs it up....channel 10 will be in a big world of hurt unless big changes occur. So sad to see such a great station fall. I still love Laurie Jennings though. Tallahassee Report Card WCTV (CBS): Airing the hour-long CBS Evening News with Katie Couric with Wheel of Fortune moving to WCTV2 (MyNetworkTV) WTXL (ABC): Airing the hour-long ABC World News with Charles Gibson in place of Inside Edition. WTWC (NBC): Skipped on the hour-long NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams to air Entertainment Tonight, but what else should expect from this NBC station without any form of local news. WTLH (FOX): Fox News Channel is getting the coverage of this, so our Fox station only airs their normal 30-minute 10 O'Clock News produced by WCTV.
