July 3, 200719 yr i just think its funny how if someone doesnt like hermida, that person is automatically a retard, a potato, both or a french fry...its amazing how much censoring of ideas goes on this board and it doesnt even come from the moderators There's no censoring JimmyJack. You can say whatever you want. Personally I've said before the 06 season that I'd give all the players 2 years before I judged them. We still have 1/2 a year, but so far I'm not impressed with Hermida. His defense stinks badly this year. His offense had great potential 1 1/2 years ago, and it still has the same great potential. At some point you have to give up potential and hope a change of scenery does him good, but for now, as we don't have anyone that's waiting in the wings, I'd say let's see what he does in the second half.

July 3, 200719 yr If I remember correctly there were some that thought Cabs should be sent back down a month or two after he came up...we as fans are just impatient I guess... Every player will go through their growing pains. Some more than others, but Hermida will be just fine I think. He isn't blocking anyone. So let him work it out this year and if he's still playing this way July 2008 then maybe you can worry. . He obviously has the talent. Great plate vision and a good swing. Granted his defense leaves something to be desired but in time his bat will make up for it.

He's a flop bc he got injured. :thumbup

Then I want you to try to explain why you think you have been censored? Pointing out that you are a retard, potato, french fry, or jackass would be even close to censorship?

July 3, 200719 yr I wouldn't call him a flop, but nor would I be as optimistic as many of you seem to be. To date, which is a decent sample size, he's been injury-prone, below average in the field, less powerful than you would hope for from a corner outfielder, and patient to a fault. It's obviously too early to say he's a flop, but he hasn't shown a lot to be excited about thus far...and in most cases that doesn't bode well for the future.

I think that's the major question. Regarding his OPS - are you arguing that he has been just about average? I'm not sure you would find many who would agree with you if that's the position you are taking based upon that statistic. I think, more than anything, your statement shows how looking at one statistic to draw a conclusion can lead to deceiving results.

I mean that's the position he plays. The comparisons to league averages that include pitchers, catchers and middle infielders are meaningless and stupid.
July 3, 200719 yr kid is 23 years old, one of the best prospects in baseball, and has all of 500 at bats to his name... just 500 give him time. like some have said, not everyone is a Hanley or Cabrera in their first 500 at bats
July 3, 200719 yr Unfortunately, neither is everyone Derrek Lee. I think you could use the "everyone's not Hanley/Cabrera" argument last year, but it's starting to lose its effectiveness. Sure most don't excel right away, but neither do most "elite" prospects take more than a year or two to exhibit any traits that would lead yuo to believe they belong in the majors. In other words, he's behind the curve as of right now. Sure Derrek Lee took forever to come around, but for every Derrek Lee there are five Joe Borchards.

Joe Borchard (and I realize what you are getting at) could never hold Hermida's jock in the minors. And besides that, again he is 23. Need to give him more than 500 at bats. I can't really argue with some of you if you don't think he's got the talent or will have enough success to be an All Star. But you'll be proven wrong in time. :cool And another thing, Derrek Lee had a .875ops at age 24... not sure why everyone believes it took Derrek forever to become pretty damn good

July 3, 200719 yr he's 23, and has 505 at bats to his name you guys need to chill out and be a bit more patient

In other words, he's behind the curve as of right now. Sure Derrek Lee took forever to come around, but for every Derrek Lee there are five Joe Borchards. Actually, if you look at it, most top prospects take the Derrek Lee rout more often than they take the Miguel Cabrera route or even the Joe Borchard route. If a guy is a top prospect and is killing double A at a young age, more often than not he's going to be a good major league player. It just may take a few years to get there. Do you guys think Devil Rays are calling for Delmon Young to be sent down? Hermida's actually having a better year than him. How about BJ Upton? Two years into his career he could have been called a bust. Now he's playing to his potential. David Ortiz didn't start producing until the 5th year of his career. Now he's one of the 5 most dominant offensive forces in the game. What you see isn't what you get when a player is 23. It takes some time.
July 3, 200719 yr It's good to know Jeremy Hermida who appears to be headed south of the Mendoza Line any minute now and who has hit .156 in his last ten games is now being compared to David Ortiz. And to BJ Upton who is on the DL. And no, Delmon Young is not having a worse year than JH, not unless you think Hermida's .219/.309/.406 line is better than Young's .285/.335/.445 line. Do you? And if you think the Marlins are prepared to wait five years for Hermida to come into his own you have to see the folly in that line of thinking. For everyone complaining about Amezaga, Olivo and Treanor and how awful they are they're all playing better baseball and putting up better stats than Hermida. He's the blackhole in the lineup not the other guys. That said I still think the kid has potential to be an everyday major leaguer. He could start by taking his defense more seriously which one would think is the easiest area of his game to improve and if he did I for one would be much more forgiving of his offensive woes which I think at this point are more mental than anything. As the topic suggests he may need a new start somewhere else but I'd still like to see what he can after he hits rock-bottom and has a chance in the second half to redeem himself.
July 3, 200719 yr And no, Delmon Young is not having a worse year than JH, not unless you think Hermida's .219/.309/.406 line is better than Young's .285/.335/.445 line. Do you? I'm not sure where you got your stats from, but Young is hitting .271/.301/.405. So Young has less OBP and SLG, though he does have a signficant advantage in AVG...but, I don't think this board needs yet another "AVG sucks" debate going on. And as I said before, Hermida's BABIP is doing poorly, which shows he has been unlucky. I mean, you look at the home/away splits, what this original thread was about, and you're looking at the difference between a normal/slightly above average babip (.328) when he's been away (to go along with a .862 OPS) and a horrible babip at home (.170) to go with a horrible OPS (.537). So just shows he's been unlucky. Once his babip evens out, his numbers will go up.
